This was a nicely written expose' on Roman History, especially that in and around the time of Christ. It's another reminder of where a Republican form of government most likely began and what happens when leadership strays from that. Augustus was an interesting character even though his rise to power wasn't incestuous like so many early leaders in the ancient past. He was brutal in battle when need be and seemed to have the country's best interest in mind most of the time, remarkable given the fact that his rise to power was at such a young age. The only real detraction's for me are the typos and even a word or two left out of the sentence. Maybe I'm a perfectionist, but they tend to distract from the story-line.

Hourly History is a wonderful source for learning about significant history. In this book, we learn about the first Roman emperor. The book tells us, among much else, that he was born in 63 BCE and died at age 75 in 14 CE. We learn about his parents and early years, that his uncle was Julius Caesar who adopted him, the war with Mark Antony, the Second Triumvirate, the suicide pact, Augustus’ legacy, and much more.

Another good glimpse from Hourly History.Although: this one could have done with more careful proof-reading to arrest just a few grammatical glitches and omitted words.One must wonder at the loss of lives through constant wars evoked by power-hungry individuals throughout the Roman Empire era.Then there's the input of desire (Anthony/Cleopatra, etc.....) and it's impact on the citizens........

This is a very interesting and important era in Roman history. It explains why the Romans needed an alliance with the Egyptians. It makes me wonder why Rome thought it better to conquer rather than trade to feed its people and enrich the empire.

Along the lines of this series, the book is a very well written and interesting read on the life of this important historical Roman figure.

A thoroughly enjoyable book. This is best portrayal of this history I have read. Short and to the point. Easy to follow and understand.

Well written story of another tyrant who thought it was his Devine right to the throne. He may have been better than Mark Anthony but, not by much.

The problem is that families are permanent--you can't fire your kids, no matter how many times they may forget to take out the trash. Companies are not permanent. The only way to maintain the fiction is for people to lie to themselves and each other. Hoffman / Casnocha / Yeh: We realized the employment relationship was broken. The family model was no longer affordable, but the opposite approach of treating every employee like a free agent doesn’t build the high trust, collaborative relationships necessary for innovation. Many Silicon Valley companies began using the Alliance and tour of duty frameworks as a way to manage the employer-employee relationship for the modern era. One of us (Reid) deployed it successfully when founding LinkedIn. In order to attract great people, he avoided vague talk about loyalty and instead made an explicit deal with employees: if they signed up for a tour of duty of between two to four years and made an important contribution to the business, Reid and the company would help advance their careers, preferably in the form of another tour of duty at LinkedIn, or at a different company if that's what was best for them. This approach provided a crisp focus and a mutually agreeable time frame for discussing the employment relationship. It improved retention of great employees at LinkedIn. This is instead of working out your notice period, because you cannot be trusted to work out your time in the best interests of the company. Employers use the alliance to recruit, manage, and retain incredibly talented, entrepreneurial employees.Hoffman uses the term “Tour of Duty” to describe how employment is understood. The term comes from the military where a tour of duty refers to a single specific deployment. A soldier will see a number of tours of duty in his career, each for a predetermined time, and to accomplish a specific task. One might be to assist with the evacuation effort after the earthquake, and another to secure a hospital in a remote area.In the business context, a tour of duty is a clearly defined task to be achieve within a finite period of time. It is an ethical, reciprocal, commitment between employer and employee. The company commits to honouring its obligations to the employee during this tour of duty, and the employee commits to honouring the needs of the company for this finite period.The expectation of value from each party are made explicit, and are accepted by the other. You, the employee will be exposed and trained in the merchandising methods of the firm for the next 18 months, and will learn about our state-of-the-art systems. This, we agree is something necessary for the career you desire to pursue, here or somewhere else. You will fulfil your task thoughtfully, and will look for ways the company can improve their systems and alert us to new possibilities.There are three general tours of duty. The most basic one is the Rotational Tour. This is a fairly structured tour designed for entry-level staff, often to get acquainted with the company and to be exposed to various facets of the business they might wish to contribute to. Google, for example, puts recent college graduates through a structured, twenty-seven-month Rotational tour that exposes them to three different roles each for nine months. Both the staff member and the company benefit from this fixed term commitment.The second level tour of duty is the Transformational tour. This tour will be tailored to the specific needs of the company, and the specific aspirations of the employee. It is called “Transformational” because it is intended to transform both the company and the career of the employee. An initial transformations tour will last between and two and five years.Violating the commitment during what is essentially a short period, would not be in the interests of any mature employee. Who would hire talent that did not honour commitments made, and who would choose to work for an organization that does not honour commitments made to employees?The third tour of duty is only offered to those employees who are a perfect cultural fit with the organization. The employee “sees working at the company as his last job, and the company wants the employee to stay until he retires.” This is called the Foundational tour of duty.Mutual respect underlies this alliance. Expectations are required of both sides, as well as the satisfaction of each other’s needs. An easy, but useful, read. In my experience, most business books have about 30 pages of information that the author repeats 5 or 6 times to get to book length. This book isn't like that. It is actually useful.The authors attack the tired concept that a business is like a "family" by, in my opinion, more accurately analogizing the relationship to that of an alliance. The employer and employee are allies initially, and perhaps the alliance will continue for a long time, but the alliance will change with time. Indeed, the authors argue that the alliance may continue after the employer-employee relationship has ended. They present examples (e.g., alumni groups) of how this might work. I was also impressed with the authors' emphasis on the ethical dimensions of an alliance. Lifetime employment may be rare, but long-term relationships may still be formed.Social media's integration into the alliance will undoubtedly occur. The authors suggest some ways to do so. This process will probably require more management attention than anticipated.I am in higher education and the prescriptions of the authors will not apply there as completely as it might to high tech and other businesses. However, for me, the book inspired consideration of how some of its ideas might be applied in my world. I recommend it.

I picked this book up to bring myself up to speed with Direct3D. My previous experience with low-level D3D (as opposed to engine-level) was 10 years ago.It is a well written book (not without an occasional error or grammatical issue), the authors appear to know their stuff, it covers several topics at a reasonably thorough level, and is worth the read if you're looking for a DX11 book.You may find it tiresome to read from cover to cover, but there are several sections that are easy to read on their own (and worth it).I liked the coverage on the shader pipeline, resources, multi-threaded rendering, and deferred rendering.Note: approximately the first half of the book describes DX11 features, capabilities, and "workings", while the second half focuses more on how you might use the features to implement rendering techniques.This isn't a standalone book for knowing everything about D3D11, but D3D is massive and I find this is an acceptable introduction and worth the price.

I really wanted to like it. It has some good content and I like what it tries to achieve. But I have to admit I am quite disappointed by it.1) horrendous qualityBy print quality this is the worst book I ever purchased in the last years. And I have bought a ton of books.Mine seems to have print mistakes on the cover and the pages that would make sense to have colored syntax are barely readable because they chose to do greyscale prints.2) contentsome goodies here and there and it has a good introduction, but also quite missing a thread or consistent through all the chapters. It feels like chapters stitched together and none of the authors had a holistic vision about this book. There is also quite some repetition and a lot of almost copied content from the official documentation / reference.It is not worth the steep price. Sadly it is still one of the better D3D books out there :(

I was thoroughly impressed by Practical Rendering and Computation with Direct3D 11 by Jason Zink. Microsoft’s Direct3D API is certainly not for beginners, and neither is this book. But, at the same time, the author does a great job of explaining the material in a way that is approachable. The book assumes you are already comfortable with C++, and doesn’t hold your hand with the syntax. This is great, since you really should have an understanding of C++ before jumping into 3D graphics programming. It’s also not the kind of book that expects you to type in long pages of example code into your computer. In fact, there are not really any complete examples listed in the book at all. Instead the author chooses to highlight specific API calls and explain how different techniques can be implemented using the GPU.This is in stark contrast to the last DirectX 11 book I read by Frank Luna. Luna’s text was great, don’t get me wrong. But it was very focused on producing functional demos to showcase certain effects (like shadow mapping or ambient occlusion). Instead Zink chooses to go totally knee-deep into the API itself and, as a reader, I came away much more confident that I understood the material. Just as an example, early on in the book there is a 100 page chapter just on resources. Most other tutorials would briefly show how to create a buffer, and then move on other stuff. Not here. In fact, the next 200 pages of the book is just about how the pipeline works. It’s really great, and rare to find such insight.Don’t be fooled, there is certainly code in these pages, and there are a few examples. The book covers some topics like deferred rendering, multi-threaded graphics, dynamic tessellation, and physics. What I liked about the examples is that only the bare minimum amount of code was shown. Just enough to understand the key concepts without getting bogged down with boiler-plate code. It also made reading along much nicer, without having to feel like you need to get up every 5 minutes and type something in on a PC. Plus, the source code for the examples, and the author’s engine, are available for free online. So no need to type either way.One thing I really enjoyed was the discussion on DirectCompute and on compute shaders. There are hardly any books covering DirectCompute, so it’s great to see so much space dedicated to the API. I am very interested in using this in my own engine, though it’s difficult to find information on the topic. Practical Rendering and Computation includes several chapters using compute shaders, for example to do image processing (blur). There was also a good amount of space given for tessellation. So if you are at all interested in these specific topics, it’s pretty much a no-brainer to get this book.One other thing. Mad props to Jason Zink for being available to the community. You’ll find him on the gamedev.net forums, even helping out newbies with their 3D questions. Much respect.All-in-all, this was quite an eye-opening read. I mean, after reading the Luna book and doing some online tutorials, I thought I knew about DirectX 11. Well, I knew something. But this book went much further than what I had previously seen on the topic. I would even recommend reading this *before* Frank Luna’s book, as I think that would flow a little better. Get the foundation solid, and then start learning how to code specific effects. Anyway, this book comes highly recommended by me if you are attempting to learn Direct3D.

I'm an adult and enjoy this bible because of the different explainations and ways to apply this to your life that are included in the book. It's geared to middle school and up but I love it. I bought it for a bible study and it's my first time doing a full bible study and this has been great. My kids enjoy the included coloring pages. Use colored pencils so it doesn't bleed through to the other side as the paper is thin. I am writing in this and loving it!

I like the extensive explanations and cross-reference material which will be valuable for both youth learning about the Bible and adults alike. In fact, this Bible will serve the reader for a lifetime. The only con is that the print tends to be small, especially for the footnotes, but I realize that this is necessary to contain all the necessary material in a compact size. The Catholic Youth Bible would be a cherished gift, especially for Catholic youth in the upper elementary and high school grades who are learning the connection between the Bible and Catholic beliefs.

I love that it has everything well organized and it has key points to relate to and think about as you’re learning the Bible.

It is a wonderful choice for the youth of all ages in our CCD program. I would also recommend it for adults . The "special features" sections throughout the bible are outstanding as well. They help explain the history as well as how the scripture may be used for today's standards. I highly recommend it.

The Bible is very pretty. Purchased it for my daughter's First Communion. She is 8 and I wanted something that would grow with her. I look forward to reading it with her.

The added explanations and of course the footnotes help to explain and expand the understanding of this wonderful Bible.

They are using these Bibles in Catholic Schools now - very good Bibles with good understanding and comprehension in mind - highly recommend for middle-school & high-school students.

Well.Read one or two pages and thought something is missing in this book. More like a uni student's report regarding elon musk putting together stuff scraped on the Internet. Geez. A piece of junk i can say if you expect something like a well-written publication or sth.So don't waste money. Crap.

This book is a complete rip off. It is crap. It is all of 46 pages long and notice g you couldn't get from Wikipedia. As a matter of fact, give the 9.00 you would have wasted on this trash to Wikipedia. They deserve the money more than the joker who "wrote" this "book". It's not a "book" it's a pamphlet. If they hadn't used such a large font it would be about twelve pages. I'm sending it back.DO NOT BUY THIS!!IT IS TRASH!!!

What s rip-off compared to the pix. It's more like a pamphlet w. only, 40 pages.The price is that of a hardcopy. Very disappointing. Because it was being a Christmas gift. Not now it's too cheap.

Waste of time and money. Very little content, not much work put into this. Very slim book, with generic information available anywhere.

This is a great book, for a third grader. The book is only 105 pages long, with large text and lots of white space. Everything the author has to say is said in the first 30 pages, then repeated several times. Bottom line, you can get the same info from Wikipedia for free, don't waste your money.

Reading felt lacking of substance, essentially promoting Elon's interests/companies without containing any personality. Redundancy abounded amongst the chapters with the reader only getting a superficial sense of Elon the man.

Useful information but not a scholarly type of work. For one, there are grammatical errors in the book. This was not a publisher edited book, so that makes me question the credibility of the information. No source citation for any of the information provided.

Written in 2009 before southern Sudan became the separate country of South Sudan, we meet Michele Perry starting a 'work' in Yei - the far recesses of the bush, bordering the Democratic Republic of Congo and Uganda.Dust is everywhere as are guns and other dangers. There is no running water and very little privacy. One of Michele's first introductions or should I say inductions to life in Sudan was fried termites. The children of the compound watched with interest to see if their white mama would take the challenge! She did!Born without her left hip, leg and kidney never seemed to stop Michele from accomplishing an amazing amount. She also shares a little of her history, where her mission all started and how she ended up in Sudan in 2006.A well-written, easy to read book that will also challenge you. No, it is not a book telling everyone that they should be in the remotest parts of the world as a missionary. It is a book that shows how the mission field is truly everywhere and the greatest gift you can give is LOVE! Michele has learned what it is to truly love people no matter what situation they are in. She has also learned how to love her Jesus asking Him what He is doing each day and then joining him! She shares the story of Benia who was brought to them as a very troubled 4 month old. As Michele asked the Lord to show her how to help Benia, she knew He was telling her to just love her. She and others gave up 3 weeks of sleep to love on this little baby until LOVE broke through and Benia had peace. Hers is not the only story in this book.Although Michele is no longer in South Sudan due to health issues, the work that she helped to start continues. Read this book and be INSPIRED! EXCELLENT!

Rarely do I read a book twice. This book is an exception! It not only is a story of a brave woman and her desire to love like Jesus, and go where He sends you, but it's filled with proverbs of wisdom and stories with lessons. It's a treasure with deep jewels buried in the dirt of Sudan to be uncovered in the lives of suffering people. The people have names and each has a story. Michelle Perry weaves many of their stories into her story, the story of love. Love the masses by loving the one, she states. Face them with your face. That's the face of love that they see.

It was a great book and will touch your heart. God is doing great things thru His body using all of in different ways but I have such a heart for those that serve on the mission field, they truly give their all laying down everything down to serve.

Michelle Perry's account of the intimate experience she has had with the Lord is eye opening and if you read this book you can not help but be impacted by her account. Truly love as Jesus Christ loved is the answer to our Christian walk. I encourage you to read this book and pray that the Lord will work in your life as he as so beautifully done in Michelle's life. He will if you surrender to him. I am also involved in a Christian ministry, Freedom Outreach International, that is working in Lietnhom, South Sudan and serving these people is a truly rewarding experience. I initially read the book to gain insight to others serving the Lord in South Sudan, but I quickly learned that while the setting for the book is South Sudan, the book is not about South Sudan but about loving as Jesus Christ does.I have read other reviews about "Love has a Face" and I am disappointed to see people offer negative posts because of Michelle's stories of miracles that not only bring healing but also provision and deliverence. Those that have religion find it difficult if not impossible to accept and believe these stories but those of us the have a true and intimate relationship with the lord realize that Michelle's experience only confirms God's Holy Scriptures. I have been blessed to see many of the same type of miracles of healing and deliverence take place not only in Africa but here as well. Please remember without faith it is impossible to please God, but through Jesus Christ all things are possible. The same Holy Spirit promised to those in the Book of Acts is available to each and every believer. Seek the baptism of the Holy Spirit and you will see miracles just like Michelle Perry. Take this wonderful lesson of intimacy with God and show the Love of Jesus to a world in need. Thank you Michelle, I will pray that you and your ministry will be highly favored by the Lord.

Be prepared to be broken, challenged, and compelled deeper into God's heart as you read this book. It is an easy read, but needs time to sink into the heart and spirit of each reader. As a fellow missionary I can say that this book is the cry of our Heavenly Dad's heart to this generation. God is waiting for missionaries of love to say yes and be released into their destiny. This book is the testimony of one of those "missionaries of love" that said "YES" to God's purpose in a radical way. What an inspiring, empowering and compelling book! Readers beware: this book will demand a decision to be made on your part to radically say yes to God's heart!

Michele Perry placed a mirror in front of my Christian face that helped me see clearly the details that escaped my attention or needed personal application. She is the living proof that whenever our Father undertakes to accomplish His purpose on the planet, He does it through a single soul who quietly rests and rejoices in His care (Philip Keller).

I was blown away by this book. Many Christian writers seem to be writing for their own benefit to let the reader know "wow I am really a great Christian!Look at what all I have done!" Michelle Perry is humility personified! Rarely does she point to herself. She leads us straight to Jesus for us to encounter for ourselves the Mighty Lord she loves and serves.I can hardly recommend this book more highly ; in fact, I have read it slowly ,as part of my own Daily Quiet Time...I have been enriched and touched in my deepest place. I want everyone I know to have a chance to experience Him in a new way , walking into one of the darkest places on earth with one of His Brightest lights, Michelle Perry.Read this book, share it with others and rejoice that there are people in this day and time who truly follow the Father's call on their life!!
