I read through 100% of the sample and wouldn't want to go further. I learnt a couple of things that I didn't already know so it was worth reading that part but the book was so poorly edited and repetitive that I can't imagine it improving. There are grammatical and typographic errors throughout the text,which makes reading difficult. In one place there seems to be a Linux command error (is -A instead of is -a). Worse, the topics jump around in a sort of random way. The author may be a very knowledgeable and competent teacher of Linux but this book is a draft that desperately needs editing. I should also more that I read all reviews and most show the same distinctive syntax, emphasize the same generic points without much substance, and have the same grammatical errors. Are they independent reviews?

Francis X. Hezel, S.J., is a Jesuit priest who has lived and worked in Micronesia for forty-five years. When we learned we were going to Micronesia for a six month assignment to work with the judicial system, we read everything we could to get some idea about the culture. The most thoughtful and articulate articles we found all seemed to be written by a Jesuit priest named Francis Hezel. When I discovered this book, I bought it, knowing it would be valuable to us. I had no idea just how valuable. It has prepared us to understand things that would have been much more perplexing, and has given us such a head start in our work here in Chuuk. It has also given understanding to others we know here as we have shared it with them. Thank you for a lifetime of service and understanding and for making it available for others to build upon. We have met some of the best of people here in Chuuk and we could not love them more.

I have to admit my review is affected by personal experience. I met Francis Hezel during his leadership of Xavier High School on Truk (now Chuuk), and was able to appreciate his desire to understand the place and people he served. The only reason my review is less than five stars is acknowledged by Hezel himself. This is a summary of a culture....one cannot do that with complete confidence. Only those who have lived it are qualified to attempt to describe it. Hezel is one, and a very good one. For those who seek insight into Micronesia without having to slog through a lengthy book and massive footnotes, this is your read.

Anything that Fr Hazel writes about Micronesia can be trusted to be accurate. The photographs that he has included cover a wide range of life in Micronesia. I look forward his next book, if there is one. Would buy it in a heart beat.

Very helpful in getting a general idea of the cultural differences before coming to the Pacific Islands.

The edition of THE DEAD SEA SCROLLS - A NEW TRANSLATION that I am reviewing is the older edition, not the revised edition of 2005.I came away from reading this book with a better understanding of the times and beliefs involving the sectarians that were the authors of the Dead Sea Scrolls.The aim of the editors was to provide a book for the nonspecialist. They succeeded in that endeavor."In it we have aspired to be both responsible to the sources and understandable to the public."There is a clear explanation up front about missing material and how the editors addressed that problem.The editors examine the date of the scrolls and offer some suggestions for the identities of "the Wicked Priest" and " the Man of the Lie."On page 65 of the Damascus Document the Name is discussed in the context of swearing an oath- "He must not make mention of the Law of Moses, because the Name of God is written out fully in it, and if he swears by it, and then committs a sin, he will have defiled the Name."The use of the Name is also discussed in other scrolls.Some information on the Urim and Thummim was offered in Chapter 11 "Tongues of Fire". That subject has been of interest to me personally.The approach employed to interpret prophecy by some of the scroll authors is found ironically to be very similar to the approach used by Protestant Christianity.Some of the other topics of interest I read in the book are;The extreme positions in some of the sectarian laws regarding Sabbath activities they found unacceptable. I wan't sure what to expect from this translation of the Qumran scrolls (I had not read any earlier translations). The introduction is excellent, clearly explaning to readers what to expect - and not expect - from the scrolls, as well as some tremendously helpful background on the scrolls themselves: how they were written, the languages used, and some broad information about their origins and the site at which they were found. This primer gave perspective and clarity before getting to the scrolls themselves.Before each scroll is presented, there is a brief introduction. While any sort of interpretation will have its bias, I found no clear agenda in these introductions - rather, they too helped make some sense of the documents and shed some light on the controversey (where there was some) and differences of opinions (when there was) about the meaning or significance of the scroll.Taken as a whole, this is a tremendous resource, the scholarship and information presented along with the documents themselves are helpful and accessable to the non-specialist.

I have a copy of the original translation by Garcia Martinez, 2nd edition (they have to update it because new fragments were found after the original scrolls were discovered). That one is easy to read in parts but difficult to read in other parts, particularly those sections where there are only a few fragments.I picked 10 scriptures from my Martinez book and compared them to this translation using the index as a key to find each particular scripture (this author has given his own names to most of the scriptures which were not named in the scrolls so you have to use the index to match everything up). NONE of the 10 matched. THEY WERE COMPLETELY DIFFERENT TRANSLATIONS.So, I took a chapter in this book and read each of the translations. In front of each scripture is the author's take on what it is saying. NONE OF THEM WAS ACCURATE. To say the author took giant leaps would be an understatement. I'm not sure how this was published except to say someone at HARPER COLLINS was completely out to lunch.I bought two of these because I really thought it was a new translation. I'm not even sure you could call this a translation. There's an entire chapter of scriptures attributed to Josephus. I have a book of Josephus's writings. These were not anywhere in there nor were they like anything he has written. So why exactly did you attribute these scriptures to Josephus? Well, the author didn't bother explaining that at all. :(

I give this book a five-star rating for being a great example of what it seeks to be - a simplified summary of a complex field of study. The main value of this book is that it summarizes the entire history of philosophy in easy-to-grasp terms, with pictures and quotes combined with a narration of historical periods. It leaves out some important things, but for the beginning explorer, it's a fine place to start. I would not, however, recommend that this book become one's "only" reference for a field of study that covers such a long time in history, and yet is constantly changing and evolving. It won't turn you into a college level professor of philosophy. Read it, or refer to it, as a kind of road map. Get some landmarks and travel information from it, identify some of the world-renowned leaders in philosophy, and then enter into a personal quest for more knowledge. Read some definitive books on one or more of the best names in philosophy, such as Socrates and Plato, Thomas Aquinas, Blaise Pascal, John Locke (how did he influence the development of modern democracy?), Immanuel Kant, all the way down to recent times, names such as Jean-Paul Sartre and Martin Heidegger, to name a few. Explore some current era writers such as Peter Singer. Philosophy is far too important and diverse to be limited to one book, no matter how excellent. For this unique book, its best quality, simplification, is perhaps its main fault as well. So for that reason, start here, drive around the "turf" of this book, but don't park your vehicle there.

Is it heavy in depth? No, but if you are like me and want to poruse a book meant for a coffee table atmosphere, this is it. It gives a solid page or two on the philosopher and what school they taught from. As in the era. Like a textbook it highlights all you need to know from the person or era. I like it a lot. Oh, design is wonderful.

Without a doubt the most accessible yet informative text I've read on philosophers/philosophy.I have only two gripes, which are small considering the other material.One is that maybe four sections aren't well-fleshed out enough to make complete sense, such as that on Maimonides but this is coming from a critical, hardcore critical thinker.The other is that Epicurus and Epicureanism is completely thrown under the bus. His most contentious teaching is listed in bold as his main teaching, which bias throws off the otherwise beautiful nature of this philosophical system.I guess another thing, which isn't really a complaint per se, is that Montaigne is listed as a humanist, whereas he's probably most accurately denoted as a skeptic.Just fyi for new philosophy nerds: there's always going to be bias when reading from a secondary source. That's part of what makes philosophy so fulfilling: so much of it can be interpreted in many different manners, and be integrated into one's life differently.So that's it. I'd give this book a solid five stars, maybe a 92/100. Definitely worth it!

I purchased the hardcopy of this book a year ago and enjoy using it as a resource for the class I teach. However, I wish I had read the one review about this Kindle edition. They were correct, you cannot enlarge or highlight the text. If you have a 7 inch tablet or smart phone, you can forget trying to read the text. This ebook will not even open on the Kindle desktop app so that I can put it on a larger screen. I gave it two stars mainly because I do like the book itself, but the inability to read this as true ebook is a huge frustration.I too would like to get a refund for this purchase. Is that possible?

Also good as a reference source for a quick review of a particular idea.

This is a great book. I love the way the book is layed out with graphics and pictures. I was a philosophy major in college some 36 years ago but I am constantly reading these type of books. The Philosophy Book does a great job of introducing philosphers from all over the world and many that I have never heard about. I agree with another reviewer, that Nietzshe's section is really well done. I wish I had this book in college. It is hard to please everybody on a scope this large but for the most part, I feel that all areas of philosophy were touched upon. I like the way the writers show which branch and approach of philosphy each belong too. I also like the way the writers explained the philosophy by putting "bubbles" in a diagram. The only critique (and it is little) is that I wish more of the writing/books of each philospher were included.Update: I bought this book over the holidays. My love for this book hasn't waned. It is a great price and gets me interested in other philosphers I haven't read. Highly recommended.

The content is ok, although several entire pages are wasted with needlessly giant titles. Also, the print quality is awful, making every letter in the book appear blurry and sightly difficult to read. If you look at the photos I’ve provided, you’ll see that they seem pixilated- They’re not- That’s just how it is printed :/
