I came across this book because I'm working on a project for a multi-national client that involves understanding what works best for presentations in different cultures. While you can find a lot of material about general cultural differences, Presenting across Cultures is the only book I have found that specifically addresses the impact of these differences on presentations.International travel and communication are so convenient nowadays that it's easy to forget that people in other cultures think and communicate differently than Americans do. If you make sales presentations in other countries and cultures, you need to adapt your presentations to fit those differences.In general, the book is outstanding. Having taught and made sales presentations in over 20 different countries, I thought I knew a lot about how to adapt my own presentations. Some of what I read in Hernandez's book validated adjustments I made, but I also learned a lot of new information that makes me wish I could go back and re-do some of them. In particular, I would like to reprise some of the questions I have answered in Asian countries. What I took as straightforward requests for information may have been my questioners' way of expressing flat-out disagreement.It also makes the point that some of the things that work best in US presentations, particularly to high level executives, may actually backfire in international settings. For example, in my own book and classes I stress the importance of being clear, direct and concise in your presentation. That works in the US because we're a low-context culture, and most of the meaning in our communications is contained in our words. In high-context cultures such as Asian countries, most of the meaning is contained between the lines, in their mannerisms, tone, and more importantly in what they don't say. So, being too direct in those cultures will make you seem rude and make the audience uncomfortable.As another example, it's usually a good idea for American audiences to clarify and add impact to your points with examples and stories, but Germans interpret these expressions as talking down to them.The best part of the book is the way Hernandez graphs 13 different dimensions along a line, and presents these visually for each of 16 countries/regions. If you're planning a presentation overseas, you can turn to each of the countries listed and see differences at a glance, and then read the overall explanations plus a list of dos and don'ts for each.My main quibble with the book is the small sample size that Hernandez used to calculate each dimension. 130 interviews across 16 countries/regions listed works out to only eight for each. Still, that's a bit like a blind man criticizing his guide for only having one eye. Hernandez also draws on his own experience with hundreds of participants in his workshops, and the descriptions ring true. Until someone comes along with something that is more extensively researched and validated, this book sets the standard.For starters you will want to read the introductory material, get familiar with your own culture, and compare it to those of others you may present to. But the best use of Presenting across Cultures is as a reference guide that you should pack along with your passport if you have to go overseas to make a business presentation.But you don't need to leave home to benefit. It's just as useful if you are in the audience listening to a presentation given by someone from a different culture. If you're American, for example, you might judge a presenter harshly for spending too much time on background context, but they may just be doing exactly what seems right to them.

Hernandez's book provides both a shortcut and a kind of checklist that will remind me to better prepare, even for audiences in cultures that I am already somewhat familiar with.The final chapter of Part Two addresses the issue of Making Presentations to an Internationally Mixed Audience, a situation that we are all too often called upon to face these days, likely offering an even greater challenge than addressing listeners in culture specific contexts.Part Three discusses Using Visual Support. The style, color, text, size and quantity of PowerPoint and other presentational tools also offer cultural challenges. There are, in addition, two appendices. The first provides the speaker with the kind of lead-in words or, as Hernandez calls them, "signal phrases" that can be used to introduce or highlight the key steps or concepts of the presentation. The second appendix documents the questions that the author used in his research for the various cultures represented in the book, questions that we might also adapt for use with those who invite us to address specific audiences, in order to refine our understanding of the particular group and the context or situation that we will face in real time.The author states his intention to go further in a later edition to explore other cultures that are not found in this collection. This reader would like to see not only an expanded edition, but also possible an app or program that could be used for planning and preparing preparations. Personally, I would probably take Hernandez's key points for the kind audience I am expecting and plot them with MindMap software when constructing my future presentations. Perhaps we are in the twilight of printed books as we have known them, but, whatever the case, this particular work is an highly useful instrument that could benefit from being available in more than one medium.

This series of books has gotten my students doing independent research on Vermeer (from the first book) and Frank Lloyd Wright and then present the information they learned to other classes, parents, and community leaders. A wonderful author and series of books.

Excellent book for grades 4-6. Blue Balliett has a knack for integrating art and architecture into her books. She makes history come alive! For students who are reticent to read up on topics deemed as "boring", Balliett weaves the topic into the plot of her mystery stories. She makes the reader want to research and investigate.As a teacher, I highly recommend this book for students.

A friend and I (older adults) both read this book before visiting Robie House and it was fun!

We are loving this book! Picked up a bunch more from the same author at the library. My ten year old and I love reading together and we are both enjoying this!

I look forward to seeing how my students like this book. I know some will be more intrigued by the hunt for mathematical clues (and fish!) than by the mystery, but I’m guessing they will all be reading carefully before the end of the book!

Great Illustrations and storyMy 2 1/2 year old loves the detailed illustrations and the story. Good book for older toddlers who enjoy a bit more words in their stories while seeing the words represented in the drawings.

I was hoping this book would be easier for my students who read a lower levels. Luckily they were very familiar with this story since this is part of a big unit on the Gingerbread Man. I would level this about an I or J on Fountas and Pinnell.

I purchased this book because I enjoyed it going up and I read it to my children. Now I'm a grandma and decided to start reading to my grandchildren and they love it, what surprised me the most is the price of this used (NEW) book, it wasnt used at all and I was able to personalize this book with their names in it so now they smile saying read my book.this was one of many books I've purchased and love so much. I have recommended this to my children for home collections. even their cheap selves can afford this. Thank you soo much

It's very difficult to find fairy tales that are appropriate for preschoolers -- either they're "uncensored" and too close to the original, dark versions, or they're too long and wordy to keep a young child's attention. This one is great because it's direct, simple, but well-written. The story isn't all sugar cones and candy canes, but it's not as brutal as the original Grimm and Andersen versions either. The pictures are beautiful. My four-year-old loves this book, and has started quoting "Rapunzel, Rapunzel, let down your hair!" at the most random moments. Great find, and we have enjoyed several of the other books in this series as well.

I used to teach pre-school and this was a gift for a three year old. The story wasn't the original. Since when do Princesses in Fairytales get pregnant and give birth to twins before their knight in shining armour marries them. What is the author trying to teach our young children. There's enough garbge on TV. We don't need it in children's Fairytales.

Although I forgot about the gruesome ending

I listen to this every day. There is so much information and common sense wisdom contained this set that it takes a while for me to absorb it all. But I like the fact I can listen to it over and over. Pema Chodron is great. She cares and it truly does show in her voice. That's why this set is so darn good! I'm new at meditation and am fascinated by all that is contained here. I plan to listen to her other books as well. Hers is the wonderful and gentle voice in my head that I turn to when I can't let go of something, am sad or had a setback. That's life, yes, but she articulates so well the bigger picture.

I loved this series. Pema is funny (completely unexpected) wise and moves you through the concepts of Buddhism and makes it practical to our armored hearts. She is a gifted teacher. I feel very lucky to have found her.

I heard this teaching series when it first came out and was stunned. I'd been an Evangelical Christian -- but was dying inside for lack of real spiritual teaching. By which I mean, teaching that truly instructs you how to have an interior life. I listened to Pema Chodron's simple, clear instructions, and began using her methods, and was amazed at how both my inner life and outer behavior began to change for the better. I even used the meditation practices during physical workouts, and they enhanced my performance to the degree that I became a marathon runner and even a one-time Iron Man.I now use many of the spiritual practices suggested in this lengthy teaching series in the lifeskill-training business I've created, to enhance the personal growth and advancement of others.I can truly report: The teaching in this series is A+++ .I understand why many Christians -- the late Thomas Merton, for instance -- have worked to create a bridge to help connect Western and Eastern spiritualities. If you are a Christian, do not be hesitant to buy this product and use it to enhance your spiritual life. Personally, I have used Pema's teachings for over 20 years now, and the teachings have revolutionized my mental, emotional, and physical wellbeing.

After having enjoyed Pema Chodron's wonderful video set "Good Medicine" (6305642842), Her "Noble Heart" set of 6 cassettes was greatly enhanced. I could picture her orchestrating this retreat at her Monastery in Eastern Canada. That is exactly how this tape set is arranged. She provides an enjoyable, enthusiastic lecture with examples, stories, personal experiences, input from her Master Chogyam Trungpa Rinpoche, etc. For each of the 12 segments (sides of cassettes) she also includes meditations and visualizations as appropriate. Topics include:1. Bodhichitta Practice--ego, 3 noble principles, etc.2. cultivating friendliness through meditation--posture, calm abiding (shamatha), working with thoughts, non-grasping mind...3. developing inner strength/trust--experiencing reality, the 4 limitless ones (loving kindness, compassion, joy, & equanimity, materialism...4. The Practice of Maitri (loving kindness)--the roots of suffering and happiness, ignorance, etc. Great presentation on Maitri practice!5. Compassion practice--your "soft spot," ego's weaknesses, addiction and obsession, dualistic thinking, far & near enemies of practice, pity/overwhelm/forgiveness6. Unlimited joy & equanimity--stages of practice, openness, melting practice, big sky mind, etc.7. Tonglen (sending & receiving)--shunyata--openness of being, awakening Bodhichitta, stages of tonglen practice, dissolving the armor of self-protection, etc.8. Meditation & wisdom--post-meditation, purity, categories of meditation, prajna (wisdom/understanding), etc.9. Generosity, discipline, & patience--categories of them, undoing deep-seated patterns, antidote to aggression, etc.10. Joyful exertion--the nondual paramitas, contemplation, exertion, nonduality, etc.11. Shunyata Meditation--groundlessness, nature of mind, opening mind, contemplating equanimity, nongrasping, etc.12. Bodhichitta to the world--connectedness, limitless compassion, dissolving barriers, the Dharmic habit, Bodhichitta slogans (only touched on here--see her "Start Where You Are" for this). Overall, it's almost like being there. A wonderful experience. She covers lots of ground in her easygoing, warm, and wise style that balances theory with practice. A gem.

It seems to be a fact of life that on a daily basis, we are all caught up in this apparently concrete, stressful world. Strong emotions and reactive thought processes and behaviours, often negative, underscore how we live even without us realising. Pema Chodron is a wonderful teacher, making the spiritual path of Buddhism something available to anyone who has suffered any sort of pain in their lives; even those who are new to the teachings. She is gentle, humorous, compassionate and non-pretentious, with practical advice that I have found so useful since listening to this audiobook over the past week. I cannot recommend this highly enough, and hope that using this book will encourage many of us towards a happier and more compassionate existence.

Really, really excellent. It is self-paced, doable, clear. Worth the time and money you put in.

This is a great book for research information but it leaves out the early years of college basketball from its beginnings to the 1940's (some info) Very good book.

I just received this book for Christmas and I have to tell you I am very impressed. This book is chock full of information about everything pertaining to college basketball. Although I did catch a few stat and information errors, the good far outweighs the bad on this book. The great part of the book is the box scores for the NCAA tournament from Sweet 16 to Championship Game for each year. And even the scores for each NIT Tournament game is also available for each year. Another great aspect is that for each year a few games are picked and a caption of information is given. This caption is also given for random tourney games also. The book also covers every Division I team and gives their complete team historical records. I myself am a historian for college basketball and there was many things that I learned that I had no clue about. Like I said I highly recommend this book.

Actually, this book wasn't for us, but for our 24-year-old college basketball fanatic son. He had mentioned wanting it, so we gave it to him for Christmas. He was thrilled and stopped opening gifts to look through it. The detailed current and historical information is perfect for him as his knowledge of the game is incredible and he said now he'll know even more!

The book has a large section cut out of it. Also it wasn't as in depth as I would have liked. It didn't have the schedules and results of the teams.
