Review

"A more politically radical Malcolm Gladwell...To the extent that bookish economic historians can rampage, Bregman is on one...He combines a detailed approach to economic policy with a utopian vision of a better future...Bregman argues that it is only by dreaming about what seems to be unachievable that society can make good things possible."―Patrick Kingsley, New York Times"Both a fun read and a breath of fresh air to anyone who lived through the ghastly experience of last year's presidential election season . . . Utopia for Realists argues, with humor and sympathy, that we've all suffered from forgetting how to dream of a better world....What's so interesting about modern America is our hostility to the mere idea of trying to create an easier and happier life. We're a country that was once rich with social experimentation . . . Now we don't really even try, and mostly just scream at each other on the Internet. That doesn't seem like it will get us there. Maybe free money and a three-hour workday won't, either, but it sure seems like it would be more fun to try." ―Matt Taibbi, Rolling Stone"Convincing . . . Entertaining and reasoned . . . Bregman's book makes for enjoyable reading, and it is packed with colorful factual asides . . . Utopia for Realists should make for good conversation at the next dinner party."―Benjamin Cunningham, Los Angeles Review of Books"Provocative and ambitious...The book is lively, well-researched, and full of unlikely pieces of history."―Tim Harford, Financial Times"Utopia for Realists is fantastic. A quick glance turned into hours of riveting reading. Very seldom does a book change the way you think about some of most intractable problems of society, and of life. This one did. Read this book."―Sydney Finkelstein, director of the Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth College and author of Superbosses: How Exceptional Leaders Master the Flow of Talent "If you're bored with hackneyed debates and decades-old right-wing and left-wing clichés, you may enjoy the bold thinking, fresh ideas, lively prose, and evidence-based arguments in Utopia for Realists."―Steven Pinker, New York Times bestselling author of The Blank Slate and The Better Angels of Our Nature"Bregman speaks with impressive authority . . . His solutions are quite simple and staunchly set against current trends . . . He has assembled a wealth of empirical evidence to make his case. Better than that, though, Utopia for Realists is not a dry, statistical analysis-although he doesn't shy from solid data-but a book written with verve, wit, and imagination. The effect is charmingly persuasive, even when you can't quite believe what you're reading . . . Listen out for Rutger Bregman. He has a big future shaping the future."―Andrew Anthony, The Guardian UK"Rutger Bregman is part of a new generation of thinkers who are suggesting exciting alternatives to the orthodoxies of the last forty years. In this surprising, accessible, and often counterintuitive book, Bregman explores some brilliant but simple ideas for making a better world."―Brian Eno"A spirited and practical manifesto for improving the odds of making a heaven on Earth." ―Kirkus"[Bregman] engagingly examines basic income schemes... entertaining and intriguing.... These are appealing notions, presented here in a breezy, TED talk-like style."―Publishers Weekly

We are obviously in a trap. Many in the rich world are clearly dissatisfied with their lives, and they have no idea what to do about it. Yet by the measure of all previous generations we should be in paradise. As Bregman demonstrates, we are wealthier by a great margin than anyone has been in history.Bregman's answer to this dilemma is that we need use this wealth to buy ourselves more time and more security, not more stuff. What he is proposing is that we establish a universal basic income. This idea has a surprising and long history. Did you know that Richard Nixon almost succeeded in enacting it in the United States? And the results have been very positive wherever it has been tried. It has been shown to be a much more cost effective solution to homelessness than the current mishmash of programs provided by the middle class homelessness industry, for example. With the rapid progress of automation, we may not have any other choice but to do this. We are fast approaching an era when a large part of the population have nothing to sell that anyone wants to buy.

Utopia For Realists is a Left manifesto. It explores three policies guaranteed to enrage right wingers: a guaranteed income, a shorter work week and open borders. Rutger Bregman does it with splendid panache. The book is a totally positive, upbeat read – most unusual for a defensive, defeatist Left. The studies and the facts are all there. Deny them at your peril, he seems to say.To appreciate and enjoy Utopia For Realists, you must buy into the initial premise that our problem is we can’t come up with anything better than the way things are now. We have run out of goals. We have run out of ideas. We are all about cutting back, servicing less, and ignoring various elephants in the room, like automation overloading us with leisure time. Western society is so wealthy in historic terms that we don’t realize we have reached Utopia. Even at our worst, we are infinitely better off than our forebears. What we need now is a new Utopia to aim for.Guaranteed income sounds impossibly expensive, but everywhere it has been tried – dozens of places - it has worked spectacularly. For one thing, every dollar spent saves three in less supervision of beneficiaries (eg. Police and court services, pointless workshops, training sessions and reports on everyone all the time). For another, the poor don’t drink away the income; they hang onto it dearly, measuring it out only as needed for the biggest impact. Poverty is not an attitude; it is a shortage of cash. Two hundred years ago, we worked 70 hour weeks with no days off. And we were miserable. Today, we can be miserable with 40 hour weeks, two days off and 2-5 weeks’ vacation. Soon, we must face the reality of 15 hour weeks, because artificial intelligence will pick up where automated looms, assembly lines and robots have left off. We can massage it into a Utopia, or let it destroy our fabric. Our choice, but we need to start acting now.Borders prevent development and trade. Mexicans used to return from the USA at the rate of 85%. Now they have to stay put. Finding new markets or even just work is enlarged with a larger territory. Artificially compartmentalizing everyone is stultifying. Economically, politically, and socially. Passports and visas – a totally artificial construct recently invented, benefitting no one.Bregman doesn’t get into the self-imposed need for growth, though he does criticize the concepts of GNP/GDP. He says governing by numbers is the last resort of a country that no longer knows what it wants, a country with no vision of utopia. He ends with sound advice for the Left: stop caving to right wing dogma. You have access to dramatic facts. Use them. There are gigantic, proven solutions waiting to be implemented if only someone would sponsor them. He points out that the accepted issues of the day, like voting by women, same sex marriage and abolition of slavery were outrageously radical and completely unacceptable just a few years ago. So be impossible and have a thick skin.David Wineberg

IMHO the largest problem we face in the Americas is income equality. Let Fox News scream "class war", the rich have been waging war against the middle class since Reagan. This book touches on this but mostly talks about universal basic income (I'm on board!), a shorter work week (although 15 hrs/wk seems too low) and open borders (I'm having a hard time wrapping my brain around it). Other ideas include taxing capital instead of labor and a transaction tax on Wall Street. But let's face it, change cannot come until we remove the money from politics, taking power away from the insanely wealthy, corporations and special interest groups.

In stream of elections that never seem to end -- I just voted in an Australian election today -- I never cease to be disappointed by the true lack of choices on offer. Like most countries we have two major parties. One vows to disassemble the social compact quickly and one will take a slightly slower course. What I see is a lack of imagination of how the world might be better and how the world align to where we are headed. Rutger Berman makes a number of proposals. You might say these proposals are unrealistic, but Bergman provides a well thought out analysis and makes a strong case. Among the things argued for are: a national social income, a reduced work week, and a reduction in the retirement age. I think it time that we start to engage with these ideas.

This was a great overview of how the idea of a basic income is both more possible and indeed has been more successful in the past than most people realize. Unfortunately, the biggest obstacle - changing people's perception - is only touched on. In some ways this feels like a really good professor telling you "And finally, as an exercise for the class...go change their minds."

This is probably the most accessible book ever written on complex social issues and a potential solution for them. It does not matter whether you like the idea of UBI or you are against it, this book is a must-read only by its merit of fluid style, readibility and professional, research-based journalism. If you were pro-UBI, it will solidify you in your position, if you you were neutral or against it for any reason or just pure prejudice, it will make you re-think and open your eyes.

Mr. Bregman lays out three societal changes that can improve our world. He puts forth solid cases for all three and describes a better world. I would recommend this book to anyone discouraged by recent political movements looking for an alternative uplifting future.

I liked Meet Cute, but I didn't love it. It expanded my definition of a meet cute, in that not all of these stories were actually cute. In some of the stories, there seemed to be a lot of unnecessary manufactured drama - as if one problem for the protagonist to solve wasn't enough. But instead of spending more time on the stories I didn't really care for, here are some of my favorite stories in the collection: Click, The Intern, The Way We Love Here, Oomph, Say Everything, and The Department of Dead Love. I wish they had all been like these stories - I was expecting a lot more feel-good moments than I feel like I actually got. This was cute, but I'm glad I didn't get it in hardback. A more detailed review of the individual stories is below:Siege Ettiquette - a solemn beginning. I guess I assumed all meet cutes were feel-good. This one had a lot of emotion, but the main female is a mean girl and there are several stereotypes thrown around. I guess that's not too far- fetched, since it is high school, but i found it hard to relate or root for the characters.Print Shop - a slightly more upbeat story. I liked all of the detail about the print shop, but i didn't feel like we got to know the main character (whose head we're in) very well. so caring about her feelings felt a bit odd. But again, i will say the writing was really good!Hourglass - also not a feel good story. There's some depth, but I guess I don't understand why there had to be drama between the two friends, why everything else in Cherish's life, all the upcoming change and questions couldnt be enough.Click - i LOVED this story! Set in the nearish future, two people meet for a blind date with a twist. It was lovely and sweet and fun to read! The Intern - This story? This story is so good! Sweet and stormy and fun and fierce. Full of loving and sadness and laughter and heart. This is what i wanted the entire collection to be!Somewhere That's Green - I'm afraid to say anything negative about this story, because i do like the diversity, and i think it will probably give a lot of people hope. But it all felt... forced? cliche? i hate that, word. I think if it had ended just after the hug, I'd be more on board with it.The Way We Love Here - This story is MAGIC. It's sweet and lovely and sad and extraordinary. I love the idea of soulmate tattoos, but also the idea of potentially thwarting them. This is the best of the bunch!OOmph - i adored this story. The uncertainty and authenticity. The nerdy jokes and nervousness. i want more stories like this! The Dictionary of You and Me - I liked this story and found it a quick and delightful read. I'm kept from loving it simply because the main character kept pointing out how what was happening would only ever happen in a movie. That broke my distended disbelief each time. The Unlikely Likelihood of Falling in Love - This was cute. i enjoyed the format and most of the story. I liked the characters, too. I think I just, didn't like the handful of references to meet cutes within this meet cute.259 Million Miles - i didn't like this story. it was strange being in a guy's head and Blythe felt VERY manic pixie dreamgirl.Something Real - i liked this story, but i think i would have liked it more if the guy wasn't a complete jerk. The two main females were wonderful and it was fantastic that they wouldn't fight over the guy!Say Everything - I LOVE this one! sweet and a little melancholy and the awkwardness abounds. But so do the truths and the good advice. YOLO and all that, you know? The Department of Dead Love - What a wonderful story to end on! I love the idea of an organization devoted to understanding and researching love. A great note to end on!

I think with this type of short story collection, where each one is by a different author, it's not unexpected that I would enjoy each one a different amount. There were some I really enjoyed and some that were just okay. I didn't dislike any of them though and overall it was an enjoyable read. I had thought these were all contemporary in nature but I was pleasantly surprised to find that some were science fiction.I also loved that there weren't just boy meets girl stories (there were girl meets girl, transgender girl meets girl, etc.). Plus, they weren't all white people. This is probably nitpicky but there was some geography issues in the first story: "Siege Etiquette" and it bothered me, mostly because it involved the area I'm from (Syracuse, NY is in Onondaga County).

This is a super fun anthology that totally lives up to the cuteness promised in the title! My top three stories that I absolutely cannot get out of my head no matter how hard I try:1. THE WAY WE LOVE HERE by Dhonielle Clayton - Gorgeously written, evocative, and felt like an entire love story in twenty-five pages?! I know, but how? This was my first taste of Clayton's writing, and it made me even more excited to run and preorder THE BELLES.2. OOMPH by Emery Lord - So. Freaking. Cute. Two girls meet at an airport and I am trash for this trope OKAY.3. CLICK by Katherine McGee - A near future that explores dating apps vs. IRL connections....Really I meant to do a top three but I could keep going on and on. PAINT SHOP by Nina LaCourhas such a unique setting and hopeful ending and is delightfully f/f. THE UNLIKELY LIKELIHOOD OF FALLING IN LOVE made me swoon (the blue sweatshirt!). And THE DEPARTMENT OF DEAD LOVE was just such a unique premise my goodness! This is the first anthology series I've read; and I'm certainly on the bandwagon now!

Meet Cute is a book of short stories written by various authors telling the stories of meeting that potential someone. This is the first book of short stories that I’ve read. So I didn’t know what to expect. I saw that Jennifer L. Armentrout was a writer on this book and she is one of my favorite authors, so I decided, why not?I did enjoy some of the stories in this book, though it took me a while to finish reading, and that is usually not a good sign. The writing was great. Each writer shines individually and seeing their different styles is intriguing. This book ranges from the young adult to new adult genre. I liked a lot of little things about Meet Cute. I love that there is a story for everyone. Every race, gender, and sexual orientation has a story in this book and it is part of what makes it fantastic. I loved the different genres depicted as well. Whether it be young adult, new adult, dystopian, or fantasy, this book has it all. The variety is amazing and I believe that everyone will find a story in it that’s just for them.Even though I enjoyed those aspects, I couldn’t bring myself to wanting to read this book. I found that I needed a break from reading it just to read something else. it’s not that it was bad, I just couldn’t get into some of the stories. And the stories that I really did like, I wanted more of. Once the two main characters meet each other and interact for a page or two, that’s it. The story is over. And I hate the feeling of wanting more from a book. This doesn’t make the book bad at all. But it makes the reader wish that there was just….more.Would I recommend this book? Sure, why not. Like I said, there’s a story for everyone. Meet cute was not a bad book at all, I was just left with the feeling of reading something unfinished.

Here is a classic with a great new twist—the setting is Africa. Wonderful art work — a Caldecott Honor Award Winner for illustration. The story is simple, perfect for first or second graders. It's true to the original Hans Christian Andersen version, with 20 mattresses and 20 featherbeds —so for a follow-up art project, you can see who can count to 40! Children can paint papers and then cut strips for the mattresses and featherbeds. Strips of Washi tape can also be used or mixed with painted strips. Fun, fun, fun, combining literature and art.

I bought this book for my 2 year old as a Christmas gift. The illustrations are so beautiful and the story is great. I would like to buy more books from this author. Don't hesitate to add this lovely book to your home library.

a very good rendition of the fairy tale or the play..great colors for children

When I was a kid, I would always check this book out from the library. The illustrations we're what stuck with me over the years, and I'm so happy to own my own copy now as an adult.

not enough black princesses for little girls i got this for my niece and i absolutely love it...great for little girls to be able to identify with the characters in the story...and its awesome that the setting is in Africa

My nieces and nephews LOVE this book! Highly recommend!

Such beautiful pictures, and a sweet story. A book long overdue for children of color or diverse backgrounds, but a great choice for any child.

Received three of the same book? Nice but I only needed one.

Have had this book at least a month now and still stuck on chapter 2. Something is just not right about the way they're trying to explain how to set this environment up. Exactly what data should be populated in the share targets and maybe even the file formats would help instead of broadly stating "When referring to packages that come in an ISO format, such as Windows server, you need to extract the contents of the ISO and copy those across, not the ISO itself." What about the other packages? Exactly what should be in those shares? Even if its old data in those folders, show us so we at least have an idea whether or not we're heading in the right direction. I shouldn't have to google everything. That's why I bought the book! Seems to be a piece of trash at this point since I'm having to google everything due to a lack of explanation and examples. If I somehow actually get past this chapter and get to proceed, I may change the review. At this point, though, it was a huge waste of money.

This book won't teach you everything you'll want to know about SCCM - but it sure makes getting up to speed pretty painless and simple. I referred to it over and over again after reading through cover to cover. Many books on SCCM only talk about older versions - same with trying to find information online - there is just so much on the older versions its hard to find up to date information. This book helps bridge that gap.

Great series! Great writing! Great seller! What's not to like? Helps me with my hobby and work.

Enough instruction to build out your SCCM lab, bottom up instruction. Good information on areas that require small details like building collections and queries.

Great knowledge base for any IT specialist

Very well written book. A+

What can you say about Freud? - the father of psychotherapy with one of the best minds of the last century who manages to explain his ideas in such a clear and logical manner, supporting them with copious examples from his own life as well as that of others, that the book is as entertaining as it is informative. The book ranges through such topics as slips of the tongue, misreading, losing things and through his painstaking analyses, he convinces us of the correctness of his assertion that really they are not errors at all, but the subconscious overriding our conscious thoughts. The upshot, though, is that you will begin noticing the errors you make yourself and it is often only the work of a few moments to uncover the reasons you actually made these "mistakes". Just as revealing, you will not be able to help yourself from responding mentally to the errors made by your family and friends and this will provide you with insights into their real intentions and feelings, insights they may not even be aware of themselves.A fascinating introduction to psychoanalysis which will open your mind ( and no, not everything is related back to sexual hangups, as detractors of Freud may make you believe ) .

I am re-reading Freud and this was my third choice. As I have said in other reviews, whether you agree with him or not, Freud is always a good read! I found the book easy to understand and interesting enough to use in everyday life...

Do NOT buy this version of this book! It seems like some random person just sat down at their computer and copied the text -- but very poorly! there was certainly no copy editing done! There is no Library of Congress info inside, no publisher info, no translator listed, etc. I'm not even sure this is legal to sell! I certainly wish it hadn't been sold to me. I am trying to read a chapter on "Mistakes in Speech" & it is incredibly difficult to comprehend because there are so many mistakes in *writing* throughout every page! Constantly missing verbs, adjectives where there should be adverbs, etc. I would think it is someone making a joke of the chapter except I'm betting the entire book will be this way, sadly. There are closing quotation marks without any opening quotation marks, etc. I'm sure the Freud's original work is a "seminal text" and "a classic of twentieth century scientific literature" as the back cover says, but this version does it an extraordinary dishonor. Amazon: I am disappointed with and ashamed of you for selling me this book, and now that all of the "brick and mortar" stores are closing around us, I hope that you will not continue to sell what seem to be black market editions of books, or I will not have much hope for my future books!

Classic analysis of ordinary everyday speech misques which, like The Interpretation of Dreams, is a foundational work both for modern psychotherapeudic approaches, and a model for how to do solid work in academia, in the professions, in intellectual life.

This is a fantastic, captivating book. The theories and ideas outlined in "Psychopathology of Everyday Life" are logical and seem more applicable, plausible, and realistic (i.e. more easily seen in everyday life) than some of Freud's other theories. Highly recommended for anyone interested in psychology, character, human behavior, or Freud's work. Covers a lot about human memory. A very good resource to have.

I got a second hand edition that costed 4 bucks less, some scratches here and there but no notes or highlights, perfect for reading

good quality reprint, arrived on time

Print too small to read without magnifying glass
