Review

"Once again, Dr. Campbell has produced a work of prodigious scholarship that belongs on the shelf of every trainee and in every psychiatric clinic." --JAMA From reviews of previous editions: "If you frequently read contemporary psychiatric, psychological, or sociologic literature, you should own this dictionary. That it has continued into the seventh edition is probably more convincing praise than I can give. If you own the sixth edition, you should consider buying the new one: Campbell has added more than 2000 new terms and has taken pains to incorporate new terms and diagnostic criteria from the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual IV of the American Psychiatric Association. And for a book this size and content, its price is eminently fair."--Edward J. Huth, M.D., in Annals of Internal Medicine "One of the stated aims of this work is to provide a dictionary that is comprehensible to the nonspecialist, and Campbell achieves that aim. For this reason, this work is recommended for libraries supporting degree programs in psychology, counseling, and social work. As for selection by medical school libraries, the dictionary is a must..."--Penny Pagangelis in American Reference

The "Campbell's" still remains the most remarkable psychiatric dictionary of our times, with no equal in other world tongues. I especially appreciate its evidently intended "old-fashionness", i.e, keeping within a solid bulk of knowledge in psychoanalytical psychiatry. Though, if in previous editions Freud's and Jung's citing were more constantly followed by the exact references to their works. Though, this happened to be the case with all other authors, too. Thus, the old good hysteria, libido, and the Oedipus complex are still alive in this pages. But -- o tempora, o mores -- the DSM ephemeral "nosology" also entered this dictionary, and one can learn about the damned ADHD, coined by evil-minded adults against the defenseless children. The "schizotypal personality" is here too, this new avatar of the (horrible dictu) "sluggish schizophrenia". The clinician reader would be thankful to the author that the most of the fanciful hypotheses of the so-called "biological psychiatry" are kept at bay.

This book has been helpful to me in the short time I have had it. It was worth the $$ I paid for it, even though I thought it was a bit pricey. I know I will get a lot of use out of it.

I always thought this the definitive dictionary for psychiatry and certainly it is hors concours and very useful as a companion particularly in training (I say this with the wisdom of hindsight). That said, I just opened my fresh copy of the most recent edition of Campbell's and read the entry of "psychosis", every definition but the correct one and no citation to support his eccentric and dated definitions. That's not good. Then I found a weird error under "Creutzfeldt-Jakob", he lists another name for this as "Heidenheim disease", at the same time that he lists the Heidenhain variant. I know the Heidenhain variant, the other is a misprint or misunderstanding and does not exist. If you Google the term "Heidenheim disease", only his own book comes up for example. Oops.Numerous other mistakes or omissions: he includes a definition for "secondary delusion" without ever defining "primary delusion", though he refers to it and it is a critical term. One buggaboo I have with books that provide historical bios: he identifies a historical figure as a "psychiatrist" or a "neurologist" or as a "neuropsychiatrist" without ever defining these terms, reinforcing inaccurate stereotypes that are a product of outdated understandings. Under the entry for "Wagner-Jauregg", he doesnt even mention he won the Nobel Prize. So use it but don't take it as definitive, particularly because he is not supporting his entries with a citation.

As a person who works in the psychiatric field, You can only remember so many terms before the brain turns off. Many of the older physicians use terms used years ago from the days pre-DSM or DSM I or II. Or, if you work around some of the psychoanalysts, they use terms all the time that just aren't used practically. Well, this dictionary is very helpful to look that stuff up in. much easier to navigate than the big bible of psychiatry, Kaplan and Saddock, and definitely more helpful that the DSM-IV, which doens't do squat to define a thing...it assumes you know what they are talking about. So no matter what level you are, Tech, nurse, student, resident, or Doctor, this is a great book to have in those slow moment of memory.

This is my first copy of Campbell's Psychiatric Dictionary. Unlike other such dictionaries--which are more generic, Campbell's touches on all specialities of psychiatry. No one could be disappointed by the length of each reference. I have been in psychiatry as a clinical social worker for 30 years. The terminology referenced in this dictionary covers that entire time period.

Grandmother Fish: A Child's First Book of Evolution, by Jonathan Tweet

From School Library Journal

PreS-Gr 2—This groundbreaking volume makes the complex theory of evolution accessible to young children. Using simple vocabulary in clear, direct sentences (for instance, "This is our Grandmother Fish. She lived a long, long, long, long, long time ago."), the author avoids concepts like specific prehistoric time periods—which are beyond a young child's comprehension—to create a truly inclusive work. The words and illustrations work beautifully together, showcasing the abilities of our ancestors and asking readers and listeners if they can do these same actions. Can readers, for example, wiggle or chomp like Grandmother Fish? Can they crawl and breathe in and out like Grandmother Reptile? The text and illustrations also invite further active participation, and this, too, makes the book understandable. Can readers find Grandmother Mammal among the illustrations of other relatives? Can they find Grandmother Ape? The book ends by noting that "Grandmother Human has many kinds of grandchildren" and reveals humans of different ages and races. Exemplary back matter includes a colorful, clearly labeled double-page diagram titled "Our Evolutionary Family Tree," which is excellent for close examination and discussion; examples of how to explain concepts of evolution to children; and suggestions for correcting common misunderstandings. There is a note addressed to parents, teachers, babysitters, and other readers, encouraging them to adapt the book and resources according to the needs of the child. VERDICT This selection can be revisited again and again as students refine their understanding of evolution. Highly recommended for homes, schools, and libraries.—Myra Zarnowski, City University of New York

Review

"This groundbreaking volume makes the complex theory of evolution accessible to young children. . . . a truly inclusive work. The words and illustrations work beautifully together, showcasing the abilities of our ancestors and asking readers and listeners if they can do these same actions. . . . Exemplary back matter includes a colorful, clearly labeled double-page diagram titled 'Our Evolutionary Family Tree,' which is excellent for close examination and discussion; examples of how to explain concepts of evolution to children; and suggestions for correcting common misunderstandings. VERDICT This selection can be revisited again and again as students refine their understanding of evolution. Highly recommended for homes, schools, and libraries." ―School Library Journal"With simple text and vibrant, cheerful illustrations, this picture book offers a lively, accessible introduction to the theory of evolution to younger children. Opening with Grandmother Fish, who 'lived a long, long, long, long, long time ago' and could wiggle and chomp, the text continues with direct-address questions ('Can you wiggle?'), which encourage animated read-alouds and active participation, as well as bold-type key terms. Grandmother Fish had many 'grandchildren,' like Grandmother Reptile, who could wiggle, chomp, and crawl . . . and breathe air. In similar fashion, readers progressively meet Grandmother Mammal, Grandmother Ape, and, eventually, Grandmother Human (who could walk and talk), whose grandchildren can do all that and more. The enthusiastic narrator then says, 'I see one of them right here!' and the accompanying illustration depicts a diverse group of smiling kids and adults. Though this is a complicated topic, the simplified presentation, cumulative format, and scrutiny-inviting visuals nicely illustrate evolutionary connections and provide a great starting point for further discussions. Back matter, geared toward adults, offers information on the book’s content and suggestions to help further explain concepts." ―Booklist"A dynamite job . . . gorgeously illustrated . . . Grandmother Fish is a fun way to start children down a path of scientific literacy and, what's more, can help instill in them a vital sense of connection with the living world." ―NPR"Another GeekMom sent this to me and I fell in love. It is a wonderful, simple, beautiful introduction to evolution for young children. ... Gorgeous contribution to science education and understanding!" ―GeekMom"A lovely contribution to scientific literacy." ―Steven Pinker, author of How the Mind Works and professor of psychology (Harvard University)“Much needed!” ―David Sloan Wilson, editor-in-chief of Evolution: This View of Life“When my 5-year-old daughter asked, 'Who was the first person, and how was he or she borned?' I struggled to explain. Then I got Grandmother Fish, read it to her, and she loved it. This book fills a great need for parents, and answers a question many kids wonder about.” ―Jonathan Haidt, New York University, author of The Righteous Mind"I’m extremely impressed by the simplicity of this clever, beautiful, charming project. I’ll be first in line to get Grandmother Fish for my own little daughter!” ―Daniel Loxton, editor of Junior Skeptic magazine, author of the national award-winning children’s book Evolution: How We and All Living Things Came to Be“Grandmother Fish evokes a sense of profound (and playful) connection to our deep time ancestors that ignites the imagination of all ages!” ―Jennifer Morgan, author, president of Deep Time Journey Network

I was so excited to get this book! My 3 yo daughter has been asking about where babies came from - after thoroughly reviewing reproduction, she was like "no, i mean, before there were any mamas or papas or eggs or sperm, where did babies come from?" I had no idea how to talk her through evolution in an accessible way, so I ordered this book (with one-day shipping, i seriously couldn't wait).we read it as soon as it was dropped off. I'll admit, it's incredibly difficult to tailor this sort of discussion to a 3yo, but that's how this book is marketed so I am going to review it as a book for 3 year olds.I just don't think it does a great job. My daughter was much more confused after reading this, how the heck does grandmother reptile have a mammal baby? Why? It makes it seem like a very quick process, like grandma fish just gave birth to a reptile. She didn't understand any part of the story the way it was written. She did like the actions - wiggling like a fish, hooting like an ape - but the idea that we share some of those characteristics with our ancient relatives was lost on her. The illustrations are nice.In the end, My approach was to focus only on the apes and humans pages. I talked her through how grandma ape had so many different kinds of babies, and one looked a little more like a human than the others. And then that ape had a lot of babies, and one of those babies looked even more like a human. Then I showed her that classic "Evolution of Man" picture and that seemed to clear things up a bit more. Now she knows that before there were babies, there were apes. It seems like the authors could have explored one step in evolution in more depth so the process was clearer. But - I am happy that these sorts of books are being written, and I applaud the authors for their respect of young kids' true curiosity about the world around them. :)

I'm sure I'm a bit biased as an evolutionary biologist here, but I really like this book. I especially like that the book can easily be geared toward multiple ages. The main story is great from any age, but as the child gets older, there is more depth added with the evolutionary trees and example species included. The emphasis on shared features and use of familiar relationship nomenclature (eg grandmother) really helps emphasize the shared relationships we have with these creatures.

It's incredibly important to raise children with scientific literacy and an understanding on how the natural world actually works. A joy for any secular parent and an absolute necessity for everyone else. Make facts louder than opinions. Evolution is a fact. Teach your children reality.

Fabulous book. My son loves its engaging story and beautiful art, and has a great time acting out the various verbs for each evolutionary stage (especially "hoot"!). We like the solid science -- especially the section in the back for parents/older kids that answers FAQs and addresses common misconceptions about evolution. We liked it so much that after we received our first copy, we immediately bought a second one for his preschool to keep.

I love this book so much. It's incredibly refreshing to see science and evidence based children's books as an option. This is a beautiful, simple, easy to understand book. It's interactive, in a sense, "Did you drink mommy's milk? Can you hoot?" it kept my kids interested (1&4) and really lays down a foundation of learning based on fact. Planting seeds and what not. There are a few negative reviews, that's from the science illiterate who have NOT read or purchased this book. While reading reviewsome keep in mind that we live in a society where evolution is controversy.

Our 5 year old was starting to ask a lot of questions that were getting difficult to answer in a way he would understand. This book does a really nice job of explaining evolution on a child's level. I think this will be a good tool for us over the next few years to help understand the science of it all.

I love this book so much. This has taken 1st place in my Foster child's book ranking list which is surprising because she is generally into the Disney books or any of the other mainstream children's books. Finding something educational that the kids actually enjoy is as close to a miracle as i believe you can get. The pictures are truly works of art and that makes it easier for the adults involved. The kids also ask questions and think about things every time we read this. If you want to raise children with problem solving skills and kids that are curious about the world this book is a must.

This book may be my favorite purchase of the year. When I selected it as a book to read to my four year old granddaughter I suspected that, as a book about evolution, it would be one of those books that I would like and she would not. Was I wrong! It quickly became her favorite book. The first time I read it with her she made me read it three times in a rows each time acting out the wiggling, cuddling, grabbing. Then at bedtime I started to read her another book, but she asked, "Could you go downstairs and get that book about Grandmother Fish?" The book is brilliantly conceived and executed. I was fascinated that a four year old would find it so comforting that she would want it to be the last book read to her before she fell asleep.

A great beginner book...I think it deserves 4.5 stars but am rounding it up to 5 because you can't beat all this info for the price. It includes all the basics of web development, and includes ways to create a website for FREE (open-source options). This does have minimal web design ideas (but the book never claimed to be a design idea book). It explains how to design but you have to research what designs you want on your own (I picked up an additional web design book for this "The Web Designer's Idea Book").Why I deducted .5 star:-The book mainly focuses on using Irfanview (an open-source graphics editing program) but was (or still is?) not available for Mac.So I had to pick up a book on GIMP to figure out how to use it. GIMP is said to be much more powerful than Irfanview anyway.-Figuring out how to set up XAMPP (a practice server) on a Mac took quite a bit of research (the book did not cover this too well but you can find all of this on XAMPP (Apache) discussion posts.I bought this book in 2008 so the software cd it comes with may be outdated but since the software is open-source, you can download it all free on the internet. It's weird now seeing all of these words in my review like open-source, XAMPP, Apache, and GIMP, that seemed so foreign and intimidating when I first started but now they are just second nature. Really, a great beginner's book!

If you've never programmed before and want to get a solid web technologies background I think this is the best choice for you (and me) I Found this book very easy to follow and the best of it is the fact that everything you see in the book could be applied using open source technologies, the author give you some clues on what tools to use for authoring your projects (like aptana); while digging into this book I found quanta+ the best tool for developing xhtml, css and javascript (but is not mentioned by the author, not that I remember), although you can use whatever you want I do recommend this tool for this tasks as it is very easy including even wysiwyg (what you see is what you get), although if you really want to learn xhtml I don't recommend this option. Once you master this book and get a solid understanding and background on it you'll be prepared for a more advanced book and indeed you should pickup one that talk just about one or two of the technologies. I'm very happy with this book.

This book allowed me to make my first foray into web development, and it continues to be a good desk reference, since inevitably I'll forget some required attribute when building various pages. I still haven't gotten through the last two minibooks, but if you have no knowledge of how the internet works, you can start from page 1 and read the first 6 minibooks, and then write your own webpage. This book really does explain it that well. My only complaint is that the book explains things so simply that if you want to really start making your webpage look good, you'll come up a bit short. I've bought an additional book for php so that I can do more advanced programming, and I'm starting to learn Adobe Fireworks so I can do some more attractive layouts. For the rough basics, however, this was a great buy.

My passion has always been to design web sites, but it has been eleven years since I took web design in college. Obviously, there have been many changes in the past eleven years in web languages, and I felt the HTML, XHTML and CSS for Dummies book would be my best source for getting my web site, [...], acceptable. I am still diligently working on this site, and reference this book daily for web design sources and understanding. I can't imagine using any other books at this stage of web designing. HTML, XHTML, and CSS for Dummies has answered all my questions, and has helped me understand the new and complex design options for the apprentice web designer. I highly recommend this book for those starting out or have been away from web design for a while.

I am now just completing my fifth website after reading Andy Harris' excellent book. True, I did read another CSS book (the missing manual) but it just re-emphasized what Mr Harris had already said in his book. This is a great book for beginners and it will make you capable of doing websites and getting gray hair trying to figure out Microsoft's different versions of Internet Explorer. (I now keep a special file on all the "hacks" I've had to do to get IE6 and IE7 to look like IE8 (I especially love the fact that that the letter "m" inserted in CSS code makes IE8 code work in IE7. Who knows why.) Buy this book, use it, and you will reap the joy of client side programming.

While this book is rather basic in respect to HTML and CSS and is little more than an introduction to those topics, it presses the reader on toward an understanding of modern web site techniques such as positional CSS for layout, client-side programming in JavaScript, it introduces PHP and AJAX, plus maps out the use of databases in a web site. Great stuff. It also covers tools to use to create web pages and in this becomes a very comprenhesive handbook indeed, indispensable to the beginner. What I liked especially is its refutation of so-called web-page software such as Front Page and Dreamweaver as not the best way to write good, conformant web pages (making Andy Harris a co-religionary of mine). I've written web pages for over a decade and every flirtation with such tools has been an exercise in frustration and misery. Andy shows you why with just a little imagination you can make better pages that will validate and not have to spend time learning those tools, which is a harder exercise than learning HTML and CSS.For the price, it's an excellent survey of web technologies. This book is at least twice as thick as any other for Dummies book I own, but it's a good, solid introduction, roadmap and handbook, and easily navigable.

GIFTED TO TEENAGER AS GRADUATION PRESENT AND SHE LOVED IT. SHE ENDEAVORS TO BE A PHOTOGRAPHER.

One of my favorite icons who opened the door of opportunity for so many aspiring artists in photography and film. To be appreciated by young readers everywhere. A delightful and inspiring read.

I really loved the way this story unfolds. Great topic. Great illustrations. My kindle version had an error, but it shouldn't make anyone miss this story.

Although I am an older photographer hobbyist, I was inspired by this true story. I think evey African American children (and parents) should read this story.

Words and pictures tell the extraordinary story of an extraordinary man. Very well done. Recommended for both library and home collections. This one is also well-formatted for the KINDLE.

awesome illistution

I purchased this for my nephew along with other books. I think this is a great gift idea and it went over well with his parents.

Beautiful illustrations that do justice to the poetic words in this biography of a legendary artist. I was mostly unfamiliar with Gordon Parks before picking up this book, but am so glad I took the time to learn his story. He achieved enormous success during his lifetime, particularly concerning his prominence as an African-American photographer.
