Written as though people with excellent vocabularies will read it, this book was really a gem in a sea of drek these days. This woman has a handle on the language, and though it gets wordy at time, it is only just leaning on the edge of wordy, not full tilt into wordy. I was most reluctant to read anything which profits from another authors earlier writings, as this does from Arthur Conan Doyle, but I have a friend who kept mentioning this series, so I took the plunge. Glad I did. The characters are believable, fascinating and humorous, and the plot is intertwined enough to give a real run for your money. I would recommend this to those who like Sherlock Holmes, even those who do not suffer knock-offs gladly. :)

Laurie King takes on the business of extending the Sherlock Holmes canon in an intriguing way. Rather than simply replace Watson with a new foil for Holmes, she makes Holmes' new partner an associate, an apprentice he teaches with the goal of following in his footsteps. As you would expect, Holmes finds this difficult to reconcile with his lifetime of solitary pursuits, but King's choice of this arrangement is abundantly rewarded by making this story more than a simple extrapolation of Doyle. Now in his declining years, Holmes lives in the country in a semi-retired state. His mind is as active as ever and he does take on the occasional case. Perhaps he has been watching for an appropriate candidate for an apprentice, but Mary Russell crosses his path and she proves worthy. Over time she earns and negotiates a position as his equal. In this respect, King's Holmes is new, different, and refreshing. He must accept Russell, and the vulnerability that implies, but he clearly values the companionship of someone so capable. He may also be securing his legacy by ensuring someone can fill his void after he is gone. The result is the best of both worlds for the Holmes enthusiast: the familiar that you value from Doyle, plus this novel has something new to say about Holmes.

I could physically feel my vocabulary growing as I read this book. I'm a sucker for a book that makes you feel smarter by the end of it, for a book that encourages your mind to expand and to raise you higher than you were before. Although at a glance, The Beekeeper's Apprentice is another in a long list of Sherlock inspired literature, I found King's style of writing absolutely captivating and definitely worth the read. What I loved most about this book is that (it would seem) Sherlock has finally found his match - in a young 15 year old girl of all people. And rather than dumb everything down, King treats the reader as if they are also on their level, keeping everything highly intellectual, though somehow personal, relateable and human. A great story, with some classic Sherlockian reveals. I loved every minute of reading this and would recommend it to anyone, especially those who are already fond of all things Sherlock.p.s. SQUEAKY clean. Nothing to worry about.

What a relief! To finally find a well written mystery in the same vein as the greats but with a fresh more contemporary feel. The author has given us an inventive story full of twists and turns and never a dull moment. At the same time we are introduced to the depths of Mary Russell- a woman ahead of her time but not rash and brash as she could be-what with our current preoccupation with "girl heroes". Sherlock's brilliance is matched by hers as she develops her craft. It is a truly engrossing read- cant wait to read the next one!"

I have read Sherlock Holmes since I was seven years old. I got to play at being Sherlock in my medical practice, as I went through the evidence on each patient that might allow me to arrive at an obscure diagnosis in a particular patient. He made me a better physician by pointing out the true value of getting an accurate history of the disease's (or diseases') progressionIn viewing A Slight Trick of the Mind in the theater, i saw that Holmes, like myself, had grown old - a sad thing to watch. However Laurie King's novels concerning her and Holmes are delightful to read. She writes well; furthermore, if she continues her series, I will be able to read about my beloved Holmes and his tricks until I leave this earth.

Retired Sherlock Holmes, clearly a bit off his peak in his country retirement, contends with two Queen Bees, a young prodigy who piques his interest by her close observations and deductive ability, and an older and much colder presence, playing a long game of revenge. The former he takes as an apprentice, the latter he contends with mostly in futile parries and feints, always several steps behind. In the end, he surrenders his fate to his younger assistant, who makes all the critical breakthroughs in the case. Along the way, the tale unwinds in several surprising and needlessly distracting foreign excursions. The novel is most unkind in its appraisals of Holmes former companion, Watson, who is reduced to a doddering imbecile, as if there exists a zero-sum-game for the respect and regard of Holmes between Watson and Russell.

PRAISE FOR LET'S EXPLORE DIABETES WITH OWLS:"Sedaris is a remarkably skilled storyteller and savvy essayist. And, based on this latest collection, he's getting only better." ---Heather Havrilesky, Los Angeles Times"Sedaris makes coming-of-age seem ever new and ever remarkable, not because his life was so very different from any of our own, but because he brings fresh eyes to common experiences.... It's only natural to laugh at all the comic abundance in Let's Explore, but there's no crime in sticking around for the humanity."-David Carr, New York Times Book Review"Artfully milked embarrassing personal incidents for literary laughs...There are plenty of well-cut gems, including one about an ill-fated adoption of some sea turtles that's both hilarious and touching." ---Thom Geier, Entertainment Weekly"If you are a David Sedaris fan, any new book from the humorist is cause for celebration. His newest offering, Let's Explore Diabetes with Owls, is no exception. It's quintessential Sedaris....There's always a laugh-out-loud moment just around the corner." ---Craig Wilson, USA Today"The funniest writer in America....Sedaris is thoughtful and sweet in addition to being slyly hilarious." ---Leigh Haber, Oprah"This book is hysterical!"―Reese Witherspoon"David Sedaris has become a signifier of taste and intelligence....Let's Explore Diabetes with Owls was the kind of book that I finished and just immediately wanted to start reading again." ---Anna Peele, Esquire"Fresh....funny, whimsical, unexpected, and never obvious....Who would anticipate that an encounter with an Australian bird could be so damn touching?" ---Sherryl Connelly, New York Daily News"Ridiculously funny....A find for the reader who appreciates a sense of humor....Sedaris, like the great humorists before him, hits a nerve with his wit, which brings the reader into intimate contact with the human condition." ---John Henry, Fort Worth Star-Telegram"An acute observer and master of the quick, excoriating takedown, Sedaris claims new territory in this exceptionally gutsy and unnerving collection." ---Donna Seamn, Booklist

Sort of blitzed through this one on my kindle and was surprised to hit the end so quickly. Love his quirky observations on life and love and politics. Felt the fictional items were a bit on the rude side but interesting perspective. Fun stuff!

Big long-time fan of DS. This is not up to his best stuff, and is inconsistent: there are some first-rate essays but also some duds. Also he has both essays (true memoirs) mixed with stories (fiction), and in general the stories are dark and upsetting and poor, besides the fact that unlike in earlier collections which divide essays and stories this book has them intermingled and sometimes the reader can't tell for pages if it's real or weird and whose voice am I listening to. If you're a big fan you will still enjoy some of the better pieces, but overall it's a pass.

I am having trouble reviewing this book. Sedaris has written eight books that I have loved, and would recommend to anyone. They are all brilliant and entertaining, to varying degrees. Here, however, is something less impressive. There is a part missing here, or different, or unpolished.I can’t say that the themes have changed, because they have not, in any general way. The world that he explores these themes in, however, feels unrecognizable. His newer subjects (his wealthy lifestyle and politics) are less relevant, perhaps, to me. A writer can speak only so long on the subject of a summer home in Normandy, or luxury goods, before one risks losing me. As to David’s politics, they are self-admittedly uninformed and beg the question of why he would waste his enormous talent on them at all.As to the Sedaris humor, while it is present, it was dull, and only once or twice approached his best work. Maybe he was consciously downplaying it, moving it to the edge of the stage, and moving other things forward: Poignancy, topical relevance, something. It didn’t work. At times, I felt like David was writing so that people would use the word “touching” or “moving” in their reviews, instead of “funny” or “sardonic”.Now, I want to respect an artist who is trying to evolve. “Squirrel Seeks…” was a completely different side of David, and I loved it. This does not feel like evolution, however, it feels like going back to the old well again and finding it no longer draws clear water. There are a few real gems here, certainly. David remains a very talented writer. There are just not enough gems to carry the book. On the whole, I wish David had waited to collect more prime material before publishing.

As a 20 something year old that grew up dirt poor and had to work hard for every opportunity and success in life so far I found I could not relate to any part of the narrative this writer goes into about his childhood in country clubs complaining about not being the best on the swim team and daddy not connecting with him enough, but from the very first page I was sucked into this odd story with interesting ideas that seem scattered, like private whims being shared in confidence. Granted, I haven't finished the book yet so I will edit when I do. The author has an interesting way of writing that pulls you in and then pushes you back out again, though not in an unpleasant way. I'm enjoying this so far and look forward to seeing more from him.

Though I’ve recognized Mr. Sedaris’ name from various essays and stories I’ve seen of his in magazines, I only recently started reading his collections. I would rate this one of his better ones. I find that he is at his best when he is writing about his family and friends in a mode that indicates more nonfiction than fiction. He is weaker when he’s writing something that is clearly fiction. Let’s Explore Diabetes with Owls is filled primarily with his strengths. The fact is, I do not laugh easily when I’m reading. Any author who can make me laugh aloud as often as Mr. Sedaris does with this book is going to get my recommendation. And I’m going to delve soon into another one of his collections.

Just finished Owls. So now I've read just about all of Sedaris' work. What I especially appreciate is his valentine to all things obsessive. He writes with equal measure of compassion for the human plight overlaid with the most sardonic, witty humor known to man, woman or beast. (As my son would ask, "Do cats laugh?"). And David, (I'm talking to YOU now) if you want to use that for your next book title, you're welcome to it. Let's Explore Diabetes with Owls dishes out many different tones and moods. Of course, my fave is the chapter that took place in New Hampshire. D.S., next time you're in the Granite State, please let me know so I can guide you to a coffee shop that serves REAL coffee with a minimum of counter chit-chat and only the nicer kind of tattooed wait staff. Thank you for all the insight and laughter. Please keep it coming! When is your next book? When? WHEN???

The below is a review of the unabridged cd (not audible) version of this bookSedera's last few books have left much to be desired. The main reason for this is that he has transgressed from his normally witty, humorous, sarcastic and pathos filled stories in a variety of ways. In his “Squirrel Seeks Chipmunk: A Modest Bestiary”, for example, he attempted to be scatalogical and crude. Unfortunately it did not work. Comedians like George Carlin and Richard Prior were able to pull this off. Unfortunately Sederis cannot. Not a surprise considering that his humor is not, at its core, of that nature. In this new book Sedaris goes back to his early books such as “Holidays on Ice” and “Naked” and back to, in essence, what made his humor unique. Finally he returns, once again, to his original witty, ironic and, most importantly, pathos filled roots. Hopefully he will continue on this course in the future. The CD audiobook is very well read by Sedaris himself. His reading captures his irony, wit and sarcasm very very well. This has typically been the case with all of his previous audiobooks, even the mediocre. Hence this reviewer highly recommends the audiobook instead of written version of this work. The audiobook captures Sedaris in his purest form.
