Review
The brevity and clear writing in this book make it a great deal more accessible to the non-specialist than nearly all ethnography or anthropological analysis. Yet it should not be thought that this clarity reflects any superficial understanding of Micronesian cultures. Fran Hezel knows the islands and its people intimately, and his goodness in sharing his knowledge so lucidly emphasizes how important he thinks it is that foreigners who go to Micronesia to “help†take the time to learn about the people they hope to serve. Source: Pacific AffairsMaking Sense of Micronesia sensitively and vividly depicts the cultures of Micronesia for readers unfamiliar with the region and its inhabitants. Drawing on more than four decades of personal experiences as a Jesuit priest and based on insights gleaned from interviews, conversations, and research, Francis X Hezel engagingly presents his own process of slowly stumbling toward cultural knowledge. . . . Caught in a nearly timeless present, a deliberate blurring of the complexities of the numerous Island societies within this region enables Hezel to generalize about a singular Micronesian culture in comparative counterpoint to a Western worldview. This works. The many vignettes, written for broad appeal, resonate with anyone who has either spent time in Micronesia or has engaged with Micronesians abroad, and this invites the reader to relate first as a regional stranger coming armed with only an outsider’s limited and almost surely biased perspective. Then, introducing the local perspective, Hezel challenges the reader to question his or her own ethnocentric assumptions. With so many recent examples of ethnic tension, discrimination, conflict, and violence emerging between diasporic Micronesians and locals in Hawai‘i and elsewhere, it is increasingly important for teachers, social workers, health-care providers, and the general public to learn about Micronesian beliefs, customs, and ethics from within Micronesians’ own culture. Hezel has provided such a reference, written in clear prose, free of academic jargon. Source: The Contemporary Pacific

When we learned we were going to Micronesia for a six month assignment to work with the judicial system, we read everything we could to get some idea about the culture. The most thoughtful and articulate articles we found all seemed to be written by a Jesuit priest named Francis Hezel. When I discovered this book, I bought it, knowing it would be valuable to us. I had no idea just how valuable. It has prepared us to understand things that would have been much more perplexing, and has given us such a head start in our work here in Chuuk. It has also given understanding to others we know here as we have shared it with them. Thank you for a lifetime of service and understanding and for making it available for others to build upon. We have met some of the best of people here in Chuuk and we could not love them more.
I have to admit my review is affected by personal experience. I met Francis Hezel during his leadership of Xavier High School on Truk (now Chuuk), and was able to appreciate his desire to understand the place and people he served. The only reason my review is less than five stars is acknowledged by Hezel himself. This is a summary of a culture....one cannot do that with complete confidence. Only those who have lived it are qualified to attempt to describe it. Hezel is one, and a very good one. For those who seek insight into Micronesia without having to slog through a lengthy book and massive footnotes, this is your read.
Anything that Fr Hazel writes about Micronesia can be trusted to be accurate. The photographs that he has included cover a wide range of life in Micronesia. I look forward his next book, if there is one. Would buy it in a heart beat.
Very helpful in getting a general idea of the cultural differences before coming to the Pacific Islands.
Logic in culture. Hmmmm
Did not enjoy writing style. Felt like I had to wade through a lot to get to the points. Points were good, however.
EXCELLENT DCUMENTATION!!! See comments on his other book called: STRANGERS IN THEIR OWN LAND.ET
Book was needed for class. Came in less than 4 days. Just in time for the start of my semester.
