For those whose knowledge of the Russian Civil War is limited ( as mine was ) this book provides a great overview of the "White" & Other Forces involved in the conflict. It also has Great Color illustrations of the various uniforms worn & weapons carried and many B&W photos of those who fought on those various sides. It is a great read that will spur one on to want more information on what contributed to Russian & World History for the next 70 years or more...

THE AUTHOR DOES A GREAT JOB DETAILING THE COMPOSITION OF THE VARIOUS WHITE ARMIES THAT FORMED 1919-1923, BUT GIVES VERY LITTLE REAL HISTORY OF THESE UNITS AND THEIR ULTIMATE FATE. ESPECIALLY NEEDING IS AN ACCOUNT OF THE FATE OF SOME OF THE WHITE LEADERS. A FULLER NARRATIVE ABOUT THE BATTLES WITH RED FORCES WOULD HAVE HELPED. AS USUAL I WOULD LIKE TO SEE MORE DETAILS ON MEDALS AND INSIGNIA, BUT ALL IN ALL THIS WAS NICELY DONE.

This civil war dwarfed all others of the 20th Century in scope and significance. The lives of tens of millions were lost or changed forever in the ensuing conflagration-from battle, disease, famine, imprisonment, execution, dislocation, and exile. New weapons of war emerged. The airplane, armored car, tank, and armored train wee tested over the vast expanses of Russia, the largest country in the world, in a war of mobility not seen on the relatively static fronts that characterized World War One. Even so, the older weapons of war remained. This was the last war in which cavalry armies duelled en masse, sword on lance. Bugles still rang and unfurled flags fluttered above infantry charging into the steel mouths of guns. More than two dozen countries took part in these torturous years of civil war. Peripheral regions of the former Russian Empire that had broken away to form new nations had to fight for independence: Finland, Poland, Estonia, Lithuania, Latvia, Belarus, Ukraine, Georgia, and Azerbaijan. Other countries directly intervened in the conflict as a consequence of events arising out of World War One, including Great Britain, France, Italy, Canada, Japan, Germnay, Austria-Hungary, Romania, Greece, the Ottoman Empire, and the United States. Still others participated in the fighting because their troops were trapped inside Russia at the end of World War One, such as Serbia and Czechoslovakia, or fought because the civil war spilled over into their territory, for example, Mongolia and China. At the end, the maps of Northeastern and Eastern Europe, the Caucasus, Central Asia, and the Far East had to be redrawn. Soon after the 1917 February revolution, and the abdication of Czar Nicholas II, the White cause began to emerge and oppose the Bolsheviks. There was, however, no single, united White Army to fight the Red Army and the forces available to the Whites represented a spectrum of political factions including monarchist military organizations and Social-Democrats. Many of the Cossack hosts also sided with the Whites, seeing it as an opportunity to create their own independent states; others remained neutral or hostile to both sides. This fascinating book, THE RUSSIAN CIVIL WAR (2) WHITE ARMIES examines the colorful uniforms and the equipment of the White armies of the Russian Civil War. With that being said, there is one mistake that must be corrected in regard to the caption on Page 46. The initial deployment of 1,889 enlisted and 48 officers of the 12th, 13th, and 62nd Infantry Regiments of the 8th Infantry Division deployed to Russia on the USS Thomas in mid-August, 1918. This was followed by a second deployment of 1,886 on the USS Sheridan and 1,811 on the USS Logan in September, 1918 to Russia. Prior to the above deployments, were the deployments of the 27th and 31st Infantry Regiments from the Philippines on the USS Merritt, USS Crook, and USS Warren to Russia via Japan in early August, 1918. They were the first U.S. Army units to arrive in Vladivostok. Seventy-five U.S. Marines from the USS Brooklyn (the flagship of the U.S. Asiatic Fleet) were reinforced by fifty U.S. Marines from the USS New Orleans (it had sailed from Cavite, Philippines).Lt. This particular book deals with the "White" (capitalist) armies which were trying to crush the new Bolshevik Party and their new Red Army which had taken over the Russian government in October of 1917.

The art in this ospery edition is really quite good. There is a great amount of attention paied to uniform details. The birsk 48 page read provided some useful insight into the structure of the White Army of the Russian Civil War such as there close collaboration with Kuban and Don Cossacks also the multi-layered nature of the anti-Bolshevik movement as a whole from the right wing monarchists to the arachist partisans that fought red and white. i really loved the plates on the black uniformed officers units. Buy it!!!

When I was in college, The Gregg Reference Manual was referred to by the professors as "The Bible". Just like the title says, it covers all the bases for all your writing needs at least on the business level of Style, Grammar, Usage, and Formatting. The book gets better with each edition adding new things to keep up with the technology of today's world. My favorite section of the book it the words that sound alike but spelled differently. Whenever I am not sure which word to use, like "Affect" and "Effect", I head to the GRM. If I am not sure on term papers or reports, I head to the GRM. It is a great book for secretaries and administrative assistants. They have added new sections to keep up with computer usage as in my days of high school and college, we were using manual and electric typewriters and computers are now the basic source for typing correspondence, reports, and all the computer software used in today's business world. I will always buy the latest edition, even though earlier editions, they only change a few words or things, but this is the best reference book to have in your library like a dictionary and thesaurus is.

I am attending college right now and I am taking a course where this book was required. I am glad it was required because I am able to use it for my other courses. I will definitely be keeping this book FOREVER, even after I graduate. This book should be given out free by the colleges to all new students that enroll in college, because it can be helpful in any of the courses where you have to write papers. i.e.: English 101,102,103, etc...AWESOME book!!! If they come out with a newer version, I will likely by that one also....

I purchased this book because a professional mentor of mine shared with me how valuable her book was to her. I must admit it has the answer to seemingly any grammar question one could ask. The only challenge I face with the book is finding what I'm looking for. I am so used to using Google to simply state: "When to use then or than," that looking through a reference manual seems tedious. Overall the book is a great resource once you familiarize yourself with how to search your topic.

I was debating buying this book or Chicago Manual of Style (CMS).Found CMS @ my local library, and was turned off by its sheer weight/volume. Nonetheless, I opened it for a perusal, and found that its a tough book to navigate. Those are the only two cons you'll find with that book. Besides, it still remains the go-to book in the publishing business. But if you are an aspiring/pro fiction writer, then 'The Gregg Reference Manual' is the perfect fit. This book is not cumbersome, visually appealing, and easy to use.So far, I haven't seen anything this book lacks that a writer needs. I had problems like formatting: Here, specifically, it had to do with the Chapter page. I wanted to know how many line spaces down do I go before typing in the Chapter + chapter title. Other books I have say 1/3 of the way down. Of course not many people can translate that. Here, this manual was more clear -- 6 lines down. This is just one example of many.A definite recommend.FINAL NOTE: I'd recommend buying any edition from 2009 or beyond. Reason being certain updates in writing rules have been introduced e.g Instead of the use of underlined words for emphasis, italics is the 'new norm'.

Really great book for editors, writers, etc. I am a scopist, and this resource is invaluable to me. My favorite section is the list of compound words that often get misspelled, like "day care" vs. "daycare." Can't beat the price. So glad I bought this.

This book contains so much information in it! It is a great book to have if you work in an office or if you are writing a lot of papers, or if you just are interested in proper writing techniques. I had to get this book for a class, and most people re-sell their school textbooks, but this one is one I will be keeping for my bookshelf forever. I really feel like it will be a handy book to fall back on later down the road in my career field.

Handy for business and school environment. Useful for an occasional reference in grammar. For example, it's easy to forget the usage of a semicolon and colon when you don't use it all the time.

I recently attended a business writing class where the instructor recommended this book. Early on after graduating from high school, I spent a year in secretarial school where I learned extensively about punctuation, sentence structure etc. In this class I found out that some rules have changed and I needed an upgrade. I am very happy with this book and I feel it will be an invaluable resource with both personal and business correspondence. I highly recommend it.

This book was a thorough and thoroughly interesting account of the history of the Chicago River.It starts with a lovely description of this verdant river as a source of fresh water and transportationfor the Native Americans who lived in the region. It continues as it tells of howit was transformed over the years to accommodate the burgeoning population.This book quotes many primary sources in a highly readable fashion.A must read for a lover of Chicago history.

Very good book on the river. I picked up a copy while in Chicago at a water front hotel and could not put it down. If you live in the area or travel there, knowing where the streets got their names, the history (good and bad) of the river and the city itself is quite enjoyable. Toward the end of the book it seems to meander a bit but all in all the book is a great history read. If you like to barf out interesting facts to annoy friends and family, this book will give you excellent fodder.

I moved away from Chicago 40 years ago. I still cheer on the Bears, White Sox, Cubs, Bulls and Black Hawks no matter where I have lived.This is a very nicely put together book. The author's strong connection to the city is very evident.I found this book very enjoyable to read. The scope of coverage and pace are for the most part on target.It is likely that she could have easily have wandered down a myriad of topics that would have diluted her central topic, namely the river itself.All in all a well crafted piece for anyone who wants to know more about their home town.Pictures and graphics (maps) were OK, but I would like to see more detail.If you want to know more about your city, buy this book.

I found this book most interesting, but if you aren't familiar with Chicago already there are a lot of references that won't mean anything (and no-one from other places probably cares how geography relates to modern street names. This tells a story which is important to the city and thus I'd recommend it for local history buffs.

Very interesting and complete with illustrations book. You won't find anything alike. I would highly recommend for pleasure or educational reading.

What a great book. It is very dense though and has taken me a lot of time to read. But if you want to really learn the history of the Chicago River, read this.

This is one of the strange and interesting facts found in this book. The author spent six years meticulously researching and writing this book about "the historic creek that Chicago built". The book does many things for Chicago's history: it gives a great perspective of the political realities of managing one of the main forms of transportation in the city's early growth; it describes the economice of developing the land along the river (and its many courses); and it shows the part the river played in the lives of everyone along its banks. The drawings and maps in the book are carefully chosen to give the reader an accurate visual picture of the times. My favorite is the one on pg. 96 where men are lifting an entire hotel to accomodate the installation of sewers in the city. I also loved the story about the "kidnapped dredge"! The last third of the book is very pertinent to the people in the area who truly love the outdoors. It describes the development of the Skokie Lagoons and the Chicago Botanic Garden where many of us bird and the start of the natural areas restoration for which Chicago has become so well known along the banks of the North Branch. For folks who grew up in or near the city, the neighborhood references are sure to bring back fond memories but, even for those of us who did not grow up in this area, there is much to learn. This book would be a great addition to a reference library or a wonderful gift for someone interested in Chicago and its varied history. Looking for the answer to the question that began this review? Well, you'll have to read the book to see how a stroke of luck- or a pen!- made us the "City of Big Shoulders" rather than the "City of the Northwoods"!

This book delivers on its title by providing a thorough account of the natural and unnatural (affected by humans) history of the Chicago River. Although the title is apt, it understates the breadth of fascinating material in the book. The "natural history" covers every facet of the river and its environs and provides a good primer about nature in general and the effect that people can have on it. Through the "unnatural history" we learn about the growth of Chicago and its suburbs as well as the Midwest and the United States, with the unifying theme of the river holding everything together.It's clear that a huge amount of research went into this book, and even technical sections are presented clearly and enlivened by interestuing tidbits of information.
