I have the paperback 'Apostasy from the Gospel', Abridged and made easy to read by R.J.K. Law. A Puritan Paperback book - John Owen. When I purchased and downloaded this book, I expected the kindle version of the paperback or even the longer version. What I received, in the kindle version of the book, was a long narrative titled 'to the reader' and a listing of the chapters from the book itself but no narrative. The narrative 'To the Reader' is not listed or shown in Law's abridged version. I am really looking for the 'Puritan Paperback' "Apostasy from the Gospel" and this version was a waste of $2.99 to Amazon. To their credit, they did list that the book was only 26 pages, but threw me off when they went on to say "This Classic Puritan meditation on Hebrews 6:4-6 contains the following chapters and it list all of them including 'To the Reader'. Expecting to read the other chapters, all I received was their titles.I would not recommend this kindle download if you are looking to read John Owen's "Apostasy from the Gospel" in any form.

Love the book. It gave me a lot of information.

This and "the Holy Spirit" by Owen are two of the best books ever.

Few in churches today are actually preaching the truth about Salvation I am sorry to say. Instead treating you to a myriad of "health, wealth, and prosperity" teaching claiming that is from God, it is NOT. In fact the BIBLE says we may endure all kinds of hardships, being hated, killed, the list goes on.Many in the pulpits of today's churches claim all one must do is "Accept Jesus in their heart" which is NOT in the Bible any where. That "Doctrine is not there period no matter how hard they try and NO Revelations did not mean Jesus is standing at the door of your heart hoping you will let Him in. That was to a CHURCH not to YOU.This book will share with you a DEEP inside look at the truth, your own salvation, and so much more.I warn you, if you want to go on with your dreams of God being loving and loving you JUST AS YOU ARE, you better go read something from the guru Joel Osteen because this book is TRUTH not fiction.If you are serious about your faith in Jesus Christ and want the truth even if it means you find out everything you think you know is a LIE, as did I many years ago as a minister, than this IS the book for you. ONLY THE TEACHABLE WILL GET ANYTHING OUT OF THIS. Those set in their fantasy will be angered only.God bless I pray you see the truth in this book as so many have.Pastor Ron Godwin

Full of Scripture references and important definitions with distinctives allows this composition to be a crucial read in a church age when warnings and admonitions are tossed away as "legalism" or "just being too hard and lacking grace".Owen's long first chapter, "The Nature And Causes Of Apostasy", reveals four great privileges that do not accompany salvation (Heb. 6:4-6): 1) spiritual illumination; 2) tasting the heavenly gift; 3) partakers of the Holy Spirit; 4) and tasting the good Word of God. This section reveals the important distinctions between the sincere/insincere (read William Gurnall, The Christian In Complete Armor - Book 2). The author (Owen) cogently states, "Many are partakers of Him in spiritual gifts who are never partakers of Him in His saving graces." The falling away refers to a persistent rebellion and disobedience to God and His Word, declares the author.Owen further states that people have difficulties with the Gospel and even forsake it, because of a "rooted enmity in our minds to all spiritual things." (Rom. 8:7). Therefore, when evangelical truths are in Owen's words, "...pressed against the consciences of men...," this enmity rises in our hearts in rebellion and rejection against such truth.The aim of Biblical truth is to get the eyes of men off of themselves and their own righteousness, "for present peace and future glory." As eyes are trained on Christ and His righteousness, corrupt minds are renewed, "wills and desires of sinful men into the image and likeness of God." The practice of such empowers a life to wholehearted and holy obedience to God.The beckoning call to mankind of these truths is to renounce (2 Cor. 4:2):a) faith in our selves;b) our own self sufficiency;c) our self determination;d) our own self righteousness.When these dimensions are aroused by truth that "old enmity lurking in our hearts is immediately aroused like some venomous snake ready to strike at the whole Gospel" - therefore spiritual truths received only by the mind are first neglected and finally forsaken.As Owen closes this segment, he asserts that the danger of apostasy (falling away from the faith - not finishing the race) is always present; unless this enmity and love is for it is rooted out of our hearts. If not, people will forsake the gospel for other things and fall away in time of persecution.It is of this concern, Owen insists, we must focus our awareness that Biblical doctrine must understood by the mind, loved by the heart, and joyfully submitted to in our will.A must read and the abridged version is easier to read for those learning to track with Puritan writings. The reader will discover the various forms of apostasy delineated in Scripture with their adverse characterisitics. The best and most complete writing on the subject that I am aware of.

This is a short paperback gleaming some of the insights from John Owen's massive corpus, and especially his 7 volume commentary on the Book of Hebrews. His perception of the problem of the prodigal, and the Hebrews warnings, are magical; probably the finest commentary on the book. Very perspicacious, and on target. Yet some of Owen's considerations concerning prophecy I could not quite understand, and I thought probably mistaken. Nonetheless, the reasons to purchase this are a rebuking of the fallen, and a calling to repentance, while, and if, it is possible. A tour de force examination of the Hebrews warnings.
