Review
The Christian life is full of platitudes. One of these is that we “forgive one another.” Unfortunately, too many of us live under heavy consequences of difficult and broken relationships. Can anything be done about it? Is it just “the way it is”? My good friend Erwin Lutzer provides specific help that we all need when dealing with difficult people in our lives. These pages will help you press on to find freedom in what might seem an impossible situation. Run the risk and read this book. You may never be the same.-Michael J. Easley, President Emeritus, Moody Bible Institute“The blood of Jesus offers words of forgiveness and reconciliation to all who embrace the cross. At the foot of the cross both destroyer and victim can come together and find healing.” This tremendous truth is shared in the book When You’ve Been Wronged by my longtime friend Erwin Lutzer. Dr. Lutzer skillfully teaches godly principles of forgiveness and how Christians can have the mind of Christ when they find themselves in conflict. -Franklin Graham, President and CEO, Billy Graham Evangelistic Association, Samaritan’s PurseHardly a day passes that I don’t hear another story of betrayal, broken promises, and damaged relationships. Even our churches and Christian homes are strewn with the wreckage of estranged relationships. Dr. Lutzer urges us to make Christianity believable by pursuing reconciliation and moving from bitterness to blessing. This book is full of rich, biblical insight and practical instruction which, if heeded, will prove to be the pathway to freedom and perhaps the revival we so desperately need. -Nancy Leigh DeMoss, Author, Revive Our Hearts radio host

It’s a good book but it might be a bit too straightforward for some who are going through pain. In my humble opinion, it would be a better book if it has added more comforting passages. I did not continue reading it and read the Bible instead, especially the Psalms. In the end, my personal relationship with God had helped me more and reading the Bible than this book. I was able to forgive and moved on and did the right through through God’s comforting and enabling presence in me.
This has to be the best book out there on dealing with broken relationships, wrongs, bitterness, and strife in the life of a believer. Contrary to some self-help books like "How to Win Friends and Influence People" this book does not teach that you will be able to get along with everyone. Just as David had a Saul in his life, and Joseph had his own fair of trouble and hardship Lutzer only points to the Bible for his authority. This book convicted me and I apologized to some that I had wronged. Unfortunately Nevius, and others showed their indifference by not responding, but at least I did my part. Book is written well, is easy and interesting to read, and is 100% Biblical. Very well done... God has released the guilt that was on my life regarding past relationships as the Holy Spirit is living active and in power in my life.
What a wonderful book! Easy to understand and puts forgiveness in perspective. It is imperative that we forgive others as Christ forgives us for our sins daily. However, as humans, the flesh is not always ready to extend forgiveness to those who have wronged us, hurt us deeply. We want justice, revenge, we want them to "pay" for what they've done to us and we hold on to bitterness until "justice" is done; only, the "justice" we have in mind may never happen so where does that leave us? Holding on to bitterness only enslaves us to bondage of that person; we give them the power over us when we don't forgive and we waste our lives on waiting for something to happen that may not ever occur. Pastor Lutzer does a wonderful job explaining bitterness vs forgiveness in this book using biblical stories and real-life stories as examples. I appreciate this book in my own life. It's an easy, quick read if you enjoy reading and if you don't, it doesn't take long to complete. You will learn to leave vengence to the Lord and not seek it yourself, a temptation we must flee from to glorify God's word. It is about having faith in God to do His work and back off from the temptation to interfere. I highly recommend this book if you are struggling with forgiveness or do not understand how to forgive.
This is an absolute "must read". I shared this book with a friend who is a professional therapist, and she told me that it was extremely helpful to her personally, and she had spent her career helping people come to the terms with the subject of this book. For myself, it was liberating. The insights are simple, yet profound! The illustrations are easy to understand and relate to. The book uses the foundation of God's Word in a clear-cut and direct way. I would recommend this book to anyone; in fact, I have recommended it to many. "Thank you, from the bottom of my heart, Pastor Lutzer!"
Every one of us has experienced pain, hurt or injustice in our lives at some point or another. If you struggle with un-forgiveness, harbor resentment or carry the burden of unreconcilliation, whether reconciliation is possible or not, you must read this book! God desires and requires us to choose forgiveness, even if it is one sided, to free us and to ultimately use us to serve Him. We can not be hypocrites by harboring ill-will and hate for someone while serving Him. We only hurt ourselves, our relationship with our maker and the work God wants to do thru us. Face it, do we want him to judge us this harshly? How often have I disobeyed Him and did not honor Him with my words, thoughts or actions... Lord please forgive me, have mercy on me! Have mercy on those who have hurt me, bless them, bless them with the joy of your forgiveness! If you desire His forgiveness then surely we must forgive those who "trespassed against" us. It is commanded of us, after all it's in the Lord's Prayer!
When You've Been Wronged by Erwin Lutzer just taught me a lot about forgiveness. It is THE best book I've ever read on this important subject. I think this should be on the bookshelves of Christian ministers and counselors everywhere. It is especially helpful for readers like me who have struggled with forgiving certain people in my life. If you detect bitterness in your heart, please read this book! Erwin Lutzer summed up everything the Christian needs to know in order to move on.
I read it.... and then underlined it and then read it again. It took longer to finally conclude I needed to make some changes... and did. I've met Pastor Lutzer and he is as good and genuine as his book is. Read it.... and underline it... and then think and it will change your life. People may deserve bitterness, but it hurts the keeper, not the causer! They already have more than enough bitterness!
I heartily endorse this book for anyone that has struggled with injustice in their life. I discovered epiphanies everywhere as I read through the book. I think perhaps the key for me was understanding that their is something good in the harm that one has endured. God allow things to happen to us and out of that their can bloom something better. Lutzer does seem a bit harsh at first in his caution that we need to search ourselves for our part in a problem and I imagine that to be a tough concept for people that have endured abuse- after all abuse victims blame themselves first. That's how they suffer as long as they often do. Baring that caveat, I heartily recommend Lutzer's work for recovering after trauma.
