Dr. Colberg is an exercise physiologist. She has been a professor of exercise science at Old Dominion University and an adjunct professor of internal medicine at Eastern Virginia Medical School. Dr. Colberg graduated from Stanford University and UC Davis and Berkeley. Diabetes is a specialty. She is also diabetic herself.Diabetes & Keeping Fit For Dummies is a wonderful resource. It offers up to date information on wellness, especially as it pertains to managing diabetes. Such methods result, IMHO, in feeling much better than do strictly drug based methods. Dr. Colberg offers clear, understandable advice that has a degree of depth to it. It is clear enough to be suitable for someone who knows nothing about the topic yet thorough enough to have something to offer those who have some knowledge. . Information is presented in a way which is motivational, not overwhelming, largely due to the clarity of what to do and what doing so offers.A step above most diabetes management books.But that’s JustMe.
I don't have diabetes but my Dad does and I like reading about better health in general so I picked up this book. I was impressed with the amount of information covered and I got a lot out of the book. It was easy to read and I liked that it wasn't a dry format (long chapters with nothing to break up the text). I can't think of another book on health that I've read that had such a wide range of information in it regarding general health.I would definitely recommend this to anyone wanting to learn more about diabetes but also to anyone wanting to improve their health in general.
I am an RN and work with a lot of patients who are newly diagnosed. The major hurdle for most is understanding the disease and the lifestyle changes required to keep it in check. This is an extremely accessible and well written guide to weathering those waters. I thought it would just be about approaching fitness but there is far more here.The diet, etiology of disease and movement content is top notch. It is also very readable to the average person. Plain language explanations and cheerfully supportive tone. Truly a great work about a very common but misunderstood condition.
I liked that I'm not the only non-diabetic who picked this up to learn more about it because of a family member.It delves into not just the disease, but also lifestyle. There's a lot of information about exercise, nutrition, setting goals, and different aspects of the exercise. Resistance and strength training, cardio, even working on flexibility.It's a great book for anyone looking for more info on fitness that's not just flat, boring facts, but for a diabetic, it really does seem to bring so much of the experience and things you need to do into focus.My downside is that mine arrived without a back cover. No idea what happened, it wasn't in the mailing envelope...
