Normally I really enjoy reading the In Death series. Concealed is a very disappointing and boring read. In my opinion. It wasn't the "I can't put this book down" I have experienced in the past. It has one slightly redeeming quality and that is learning more about a supporting character. While a lot of characters are missing. A new character I hope isn't added in all the time now. That said it felt more like a faux J.D. Robb book, then the real thing. It is the first book in the series I won't read again.

I’m an “In Death” junkie (print and audio) and this novel definitely left me feeling unfulfilled. The characters didn’t ring true at all. On page 130 Roarke questions how Mavis acquired the “grey” coat that Eve borrowed. Mavis didn’t loan Eve a grey coat… it was black. For years Roarke has carried around the grey button from the grey suit that Eve wore… that she owned. Now all of a sudden he forgets where it came from??? Really disappointing! It’s all the detail from one novel to the next that makes this series so wonderful – this book reads as if someone who doesn’t even know the characters or the stories wrote it. Where was J. D. Robb in the writing or the editing???

I see that more than one reviewer is convinced that J. D. Robb (AKA Nora Roberts) did not write this book. I disagree."Concealed in Death" is a departure from many of the books that preceded it in the "In Death" series. It doesn't dwell as much on the future, its technology, fashions and culture, and it doesn't have the biting edge that characterized everything about Eve Dallas since she first appeared on the scene, so many years ago. But, as far as I can see, that's not about a different writer, it's a brilliant and subtle nod to the growth in the estimable Lieutenant. This story is not about her abhorrent childhood, and all the adults (including Homeland Security) who enabled her horrible abuse, or covered it up, allowing it to continue (shades of the Catholic Church). But her childhood informs everything she does, just not so obviously. When twelve bodies of young (12-14 years of age) street girls are discovered behind a fake wall in what used to be a sanctuary for homeless kids, she dives right in, bringing her own experiences to bear, understanding these kids (and the survivors) in ways that no other policeman or policewoman could. It helps her build a scenario in her head, a story so dreadful that it's almost too much to bear.Instead of her nightmares being flashbacks to her childhood, they are now dreams of the victims talking to each other and to her, bringing insight and understanding rather than terror.Eve is growing into her own skin. Still prickly, she has softened around the edges, finally moved by the beauty of what she sees around her, and the spectacular life she is only now beginning to understand and cherish. And Ms. Roberts has outdone herself. She is, of course, a brilliant writer, and this new direction for Eve Dallas allows her the freedom to weave exquisite emotion into events and words that once might have been exciting, but not moving like they are in "Concealed In Death". She moved me to tears more than once. Her incredible respect, no love, for Mavis and Leonardo and Mira and Dennis fills her heart, and the reader's. One of the best lines about love I've ever read was in this book:"Those eyes, those wild blue eyes met hers. He didn't have to say a thing to say everything"Dallas has gotten beyond her surprising discovery that she was worthy of love, and that love is a wonderful thing. She has learned to accept it, and revel in it. The byplay between her and her husband, Roark is peppered with "he understands" and "he gets me", the acknowledgement of two souls deeply entangled, all flaws exposed, all things open and vulnerable and the sheer luck (or fate) that has put her with someone whom she knows loves her, without having to hear the words. Just think of it, she even likes Christmas now. This is where Eve Dallas needed to grow to. And, though the cases and the culprits may be a little less vicious (and less cartoonish), her relationships with others, including her victims, are deeper, more knowing, and more compassionate. It's a wonderful thing to see. Ms. Robb has done well.I commend her, just as I recommend this book without reservation.

This was another one of her best and is definitely one of my more favorite books within the last 10 books or so of the series!!I've seen some reviews mention ghost writer possibilities with in this series and must say there were definitely one or two books where I also experienced the same oddities others mentioned (Eve's beloved character feeling and/or doing things ompletely off - definitely off putting for a die hard fan, grammatical and spelling errors throughout book (little annoying), and biggest call out for me was I could easily put the book down and not have the desire to pick it back up again... almost difficult to read.) I mention this having had no idea what a ghost writer was at the time I read these particular books. I just learned days ago about ghost writers by reading future book a few previous and one future In Death reviews...haha!I've intentionally expanded on all of the above just so I could say now, with complete confidence, that this was without a doubt NOT one written by a ghost writer. I could not put this was down, but if I absolutely had to I made time to come back to it ASAP, as per usual.I'm sure at this point anytime reading this review likely wants to know which of the books I perceived to be written by a ghost writer ;-) I do know the one right before Concealed was one and the other I'd have to go look at my online library for the name, but it's was within the 7 book a prior to that. I'll try to come back and edit my review with direct names if I can later :-) However, regardless of their lack of the better author, I personally would still read them. I don't like having questions or confusion in series reading because of skipping and books. Finally, J.D. Robb (by Nora Roberts) is my favorite author, with the In Death novels being and I hope this review was helpful and my reviewers are pleased with the expanded details. My hope is you still read them all, but just find yourself not so disappointed in the two books that are likely not written by Nora herself. I also hope this removed any doubt about the quality of future books in the series. Keep reading knowing that those that lye ahead are as fantastic as the others written by J.D. Robb (aka Nora Roberts.)Happy reading!

This is decent historical fiction. I thought there were positives and negatives in the book which had me swinging between giving it five stars and giving it three stars. The structure of the story consists of alternating chapters describing the lives of Benedict Spinoza and Alfred Rosenberg. I thought the parallel story format was an interesting concept, and effectively done. I found that when my interest in one story waned, my interest in the other story waxed.I also liked using the relatively obscure Rosenberg as a counterpoint to Spinoza, if only because I have been translating Rosenberg’s Protestantische Rompilger. Rosenberg is something of a mystery. Notwithstanding the sometimes slighting references to him by other Nazi leaders, which becomes a theme of Yalom’s book, Rosenberg actually had quite a bit of clout and status. For example, Catholics were routinely sent to concentration camps for insulting the Myth of the Twentieth Century, which Yalom omits, and that text was used to teach Nazi leaders, which Yalom notes, and Rosenberg did win the Nazi version of the Nobel Prize, which Yalom also notes. In the book, these facts are framed to suggest that Hitler was patronizing Rosenberg, who might have something to offer the Party if his ego was stroked. Yalom certainly has a right to write his book as he wishes, but I don’t get that from the facts. That leads to my primary complaint with the book, namely that the characters are shallow and seem to be stalking horses for what I imagine is Yalom’s perspective. Thus, Rosenberg is an ineffectual, intellectually-challenged snob. Rosenberg is depicted as having been swept up Houston Stewart Chamberlain’s The Foundation of the 19th Century. I would have hoped for something more sophisticated and challenging. Treating the Nazis as imbeciles and/or having Daddy issues gets us nowhere near the question of evil in men’s souls.Likewise, the sections on Spinoza are hagiography. Everyone recognizes Spinoza as the most intelligent and virtuous person they’ve ever met. Again, this could be true, but it was laid on a bit thick. Likewise, Spinoza’s foil, a skeptical Marrano named Jacob, we get a sense of authorial approval as Jacob becomes interested in the intellectual exercise of religion and then becomes a rabbi and then ultimately decides to found a community of Liberal Jews in the East Indies who will keep tradition but jettison all that belief about God stuff. As I read this story arc, I formed a real sense of a “Mary Sue” in development. On the other hand, I liked the psychiatric conversations involving the character of Friedrich Pfister. In these conversations, we could see Yalom’s professional background.I also like the historical detective work in Yalom’s effort to uncover what a note associated with the Nazi seizure of Spinoza’s library meant by “the Spinoza problem.” Yalom postulates “the Spinoza problem” was Rosenberg’s efforts to understand how a great Geman like Goethe could be influenced by a mere Jew, or how a Jew could write such an insightful book. In truth, Yalom’s explanation is speculation – the Spinoza problem could have been something else entirely. That said, Yalom’s book sparked my interest in Spinoza. I’ve picked up Spinoza’s treatise and “A Book Forged in Hell.”So, this book has redeeming qualities, but it also came across as a bit predictable. I question its historical accuracy, but it did keep my attention throughout.

As the author notes in his preface, it is hard to write a book about Baruch Spinoza, because most of his life was dedicated to philosophical thought, so that there isn't much of a narrative. The solution came to him when he discovered that the entire private library of Spinoza was stolen by the Nazis in 1942 under orders of Alfred Rosenberg, in many ways the ideological leader of national socialism. The result is an intriguing novel with two narrative threads that alternate between 17th century Holland and 20th century Germany. You get more than a glimpse of Spinoza's brilliant mind, so ahead of his time, but not entirely free of prejudice especially when it came to the rights of women. And you gain some insight into the troubled mind of one of the architects of the Third Reich, even though he was shunned by Hitler's inner circle for most of his life.I enjoyed learning about one of our great philosophers without having to read his actual works, which are said to be hard to understand. The author tried to pack as much as possible of Spinoza's own words into some of the passages discussing philosophy, to keep this novel from being too fictionalized (much of the story is invented, even the connection itself between Rosenberg and Spinoza). But as a result, the language in large parts of the book is very stilted. It's hard to imagine how people might have spoken in the 1600s, but there are many historical novels that do a better job of it. The many discussions between Rosenberg and his fictional psychoanalyst also appeared stilted to me. Psychoanalysis might sound like that, for all I know, but overall I didn't enjoy the dialogue in the book as much as I thought I would. It wasn't a back and forth, more a succession of very long monologues that weren't altogether convincing.Still, I found The Spinoza Problem to be an enjoyable and fairly easy read which offered new historical insights.

Building a textbook for an emerging and fast-changing area is a challenge. The Handbook of Digital Currency brings together a series of well-written, well-researched papers and lines them up in a cogent way. The references in the book aren't (too) outdated, and the theory presented is very solid.

Chuen offers us a good backgrounding on bitcoin and its underlying transaction ledger, the blockchain. The text strives for a global perspective, describing bitcoin opportunities and startups in several countries. Since the field is still nascent, there is necessarily much speculation, various of which are explained. The potential is immense if you can use some guidance from Chuen and come up with a hitherto unexplored use.The technical coverage in the book is good. But readers from a non-programming background can benefit too. This is not a narrow technical text but one that looks at the business chances. Managers and people wondering what to do next with their careers in startups might consult the book. The only drawback is the cost. Why so high? Given this, you might want to search elsewhere for cheaper hints of the future.

Written as though people with excellent vocabularies will read it, this book was really a gem in a sea of drek these days. This woman has a handle on the language, and though it gets wordy at time, it is only just leaning on the edge of wordy, not full tilt into wordy. I was most reluctant to read anything which profits from another authors earlier writings, as this does from Arthur Conan Doyle, but I have a friend who kept mentioning this series, so I took the plunge. Glad I did. The characters are believable, fascinating and humorous, and the plot is intertwined enough to give a real run for your money. I would recommend this to those who like Sherlock Holmes, even those who do not suffer knock-offs gladly. :)

Laurie King takes on the business of extending the Sherlock Holmes canon in an intriguing way. Rather than simply replace Watson with a new foil for Holmes, she makes Holmes' new partner an associate, an apprentice he teaches with the goal of following in his footsteps. As you would expect, Holmes finds this difficult to reconcile with his lifetime of solitary pursuits, but King's choice of this arrangement is abundantly rewarded by making this story more than a simple extrapolation of Doyle. Now in his declining years, Holmes lives in the country in a semi-retired state. His mind is as active as ever and he does take on the occasional case. Perhaps he has been watching for an appropriate candidate for an apprentice, but Mary Russell crosses his path and she proves worthy. Over time she earns and negotiates a position as his equal. In this respect, King's Holmes is new, different, and refreshing. He must accept Russell, and the vulnerability that implies, but he clearly values the companionship of someone so capable. He may also be securing his legacy by ensuring someone can fill his void after he is gone. The result is the best of both worlds for the Holmes enthusiast: the familiar that you value from Doyle, plus this novel has something new to say about Holmes.

I could physically feel my vocabulary growing as I read this book. I'm a sucker for a book that makes you feel smarter by the end of it, for a book that encourages your mind to expand and to raise you higher than you were before. Although at a glance, The Beekeeper's Apprentice is another in a long list of Sherlock inspired literature, I found King's style of writing absolutely captivating and definitely worth the read. What I loved most about this book is that (it would seem) Sherlock has finally found his match - in a young 15 year old girl of all people. And rather than dumb everything down, King treats the reader as if they are also on their level, keeping everything highly intellectual, though somehow personal, relateable and human. A great story, with some classic Sherlockian reveals. I loved every minute of reading this and would recommend it to anyone, especially those who are already fond of all things Sherlock.p.s. SQUEAKY clean. Nothing to worry about.

What a relief! To finally find a well written mystery in the same vein as the greats but with a fresh more contemporary feel. The author has given us an inventive story full of twists and turns and never a dull moment. At the same time we are introduced to the depths of Mary Russell- a woman ahead of her time but not rash and brash as she could be-what with our current preoccupation with "girl heroes". Sherlock's brilliance is matched by hers as she develops her craft. It is a truly engrossing read- cant wait to read the next one!"

I have read Sherlock Holmes since I was seven years old. I got to play at being Sherlock in my medical practice, as I went through the evidence on each patient that might allow me to arrive at an obscure diagnosis in a particular patient. He made me a better physician by pointing out the true value of getting an accurate history of the disease's (or diseases') progressionIn viewing A Slight Trick of the Mind in the theater, i saw that Holmes, like myself, had grown old - a sad thing to watch. However Laurie King's novels concerning her and Holmes are delightful to read. She writes well; furthermore, if she continues her series, I will be able to read about my beloved Holmes and his tricks until I leave this earth.

Retired Sherlock Holmes, clearly a bit off his peak in his country retirement, contends with two Queen Bees, a young prodigy who piques his interest by her close observations and deductive ability, and an older and much colder presence, playing a long game of revenge. The former he takes as an apprentice, the latter he contends with mostly in futile parries and feints, always several steps behind. In the end, he surrenders his fate to his younger assistant, who makes all the critical breakthroughs in the case. Along the way, the tale unwinds in several surprising and needlessly distracting foreign excursions. The novel is most unkind in its appraisals of Holmes former companion, Watson, who is reduced to a doddering imbecile, as if there exists a zero-sum-game for the respect and regard of Holmes between Watson and Russell.

Review

PRAISE FOR LET'S EXPLORE DIABETES WITH OWLS:"Sedaris is a remarkably skilled storyteller and savvy essayist. He weaves together vivid images and sensations into a coherent whole that packs a serious emotional punch....Yes, David Sedaris is really that good. And, based on this latest collection, he's getting only better." ---Heather Havrilesky, Los Angeles Times"Sedaris makes coming-of-age seem ever new and ever remarkable, not because his life was so very different from any of our own, but because he brings fresh eyes to common experiences.... It's only natural to laugh at all the comic abundance in Let's Explore, but there's no crime in sticking around for the humanity."-David Carr, New York Times Book Review"Artfully milked embarrassing personal incidents for literary laughs...There are plenty of well-cut gems, including one about an ill-fated adoption of some sea turtles that's both hilarious and touching." ---Thom Geier, Entertainment Weekly"If you are a David Sedaris fan, any new book from the humorist is cause for celebration. His newest offering, Let's Explore Diabetes with Owls, is no exception. It's quintessential Sedaris....There's always a laugh-out-loud moment just around the corner." ---Craig Wilson, USA Today"The funniest writer in America....Sedaris is thoughtful and sweet in addition to being slyly hilarious." ---Leigh Haber, Oprah"This book is hysterical!"―Reese Witherspoon"David Sedaris has become a signifier of taste and intelligence....Let's Explore Diabetes with Owls was the kind of book that I finished and just immediately wanted to start reading again." ---Anna Peele, Esquire"Fresh....funny, whimsical, unexpected, and never obvious....Who would anticipate that an encounter with an Australian bird could be so damn touching?" ---Sherryl Connelly, New York Daily News"Ridiculously funny....A find for the reader who appreciates a sense of humor....Sedaris, like the great humorists before him, hits a nerve with his wit, which brings the reader into intimate contact with the human condition." ---John Henry, Fort Worth Star-Telegram"An acute observer and master of the quick, excoriating takedown, Sedaris claims new territory in this exceptionally gutsy and unnerving collection." ---Donna Seamn, Booklist

Sort of blitzed through this one on my kindle and was surprised to hit the end so quickly. Love his quirky observations on life and love and politics. Felt the fictional items were a bit on the rude side but interesting perspective. Fun stuff!

Big long-time fan of DS. This is not up to his best stuff, and is inconsistent: there are some first-rate essays but also some duds. Also he has both essays (true memoirs) mixed with stories (fiction), and in general the stories are dark and upsetting and poor, besides the fact that unlike in earlier collections which divide essays and stories this book has them intermingled and sometimes the reader can't tell for pages if it's real or weird and whose voice am I listening to. If you're a big fan you will still enjoy some of the better pieces, but overall it's a pass.

I am having trouble reviewing this book. Sedaris has written eight books that I have loved, and would recommend to anyone. They are all brilliant and entertaining, to varying degrees. Here, however, is something less impressive. There is a part missing here, or different, or unpolished.I can’t say that the themes have changed, because they have not, in any general way. The world that he explores these themes in, however, feels unrecognizable. His newer subjects (his wealthy lifestyle and politics) are less relevant, perhaps, to me. A writer can speak only so long on the subject of a summer home in Normandy, or luxury goods, before one risks losing me. As to David’s politics, they are self-admittedly uninformed and beg the question of why he would waste his enormous talent on them at all.As to the Sedaris humor, while it is present, it was dull, and only once or twice approached his best work. Maybe he was consciously downplaying it, moving it to the edge of the stage, and moving other things forward: Poignancy, topical relevance, something. It didn’t work. At times, I felt like David was writing so that people would use the word “touching” or “moving” in their reviews, instead of “funny” or “sardonic”.Now, I want to respect an artist who is trying to evolve. “Squirrel Seeks…” was a completely different side of David, and I loved it. This does not feel like evolution, however, it feels like going back to the old well again and finding it no longer draws clear water. There are a few real gems here, certainly. David remains a very talented writer. There are just not enough gems to carry the book. On the whole, I wish David had waited to collect more prime material before publishing.

As a 20 something year old that grew up dirt poor and had to work hard for every opportunity and success in life so far I found I could not relate to any part of the narrative this writer goes into about his childhood in country clubs complaining about not being the best on the swim team and daddy not connecting with him enough, but from the very first page I was sucked into this odd story with interesting ideas that seem scattered, like private whims being shared in confidence. Granted, I haven't finished the book yet so I will edit when I do. The author has an interesting way of writing that pulls you in and then pushes you back out again, though not in an unpleasant way. I'm enjoying this so far and look forward to seeing more from him.

Though I’ve recognized Mr. Sedaris’ name from various essays and stories I’ve seen of his in magazines, I only recently started reading his collections. I would rate this one of his better ones. I find that he is at his best when he is writing about his family and friends in a mode that indicates more nonfiction than fiction. He is weaker when he’s writing something that is clearly fiction. Let’s Explore Diabetes with Owls is filled primarily with his strengths. The fact is, I do not laugh easily when I’m reading. Any author who can make me laugh aloud as often as Mr. Sedaris does with this book is going to get my recommendation. And I’m going to delve soon into another one of his collections.

Just finished Owls. So now I've read just about all of Sedaris' work. What I especially appreciate is his valentine to all things obsessive. He writes with equal measure of compassion for the human plight overlaid with the most sardonic, witty humor known to man, woman or beast. (As my son would ask, "Do cats laugh?"). And David, (I'm talking to YOU now) if you want to use that for your next book title, you're welcome to it. Let's Explore Diabetes with Owls dishes out many different tones and moods. Of course, my fave is the chapter that took place in New Hampshire. D.S., next time you're in the Granite State, please let me know so I can guide you to a coffee shop that serves REAL coffee with a minimum of counter chit-chat and only the nicer kind of tattooed wait staff. Thank you for all the insight and laughter. Please keep it coming! When is your next book? When? WHEN???

The below is a review of the unabridged cd (not audible) version of this bookSedera's last few books have left much to be desired. The main reason for this is that he has transgressed from his normally witty, humorous, sarcastic and pathos filled stories in a variety of ways. In his “Squirrel Seeks Chipmunk: A Modest Bestiary”, for example, he attempted to be scatalogical and crude. Unfortunately it did not work. Comedians like George Carlin and Richard Prior were able to pull this off. Unfortunately Sederis cannot. Not a surprise considering that his humor is not, at its core, of that nature. In this new book Sedaris goes back to his early books such as “Holidays on Ice” and “Naked” and back to, in essence, what made his humor unique. Finally he returns, once again, to his original witty, ironic and, most importantly, pathos filled roots. Hopefully he will continue on this course in the future. The CD audiobook is very well read by Sedaris himself. His reading captures his irony, wit and sarcasm very very well. This has typically been the case with all of his previous audiobooks, even the mediocre. Hence this reviewer highly recommends the audiobook instead of written version of this work. The audiobook captures Sedaris in his purest form.

This book was an eye opener for me. I have been dealing with many of the same issues as the author has and is currently experiencing. It has been 44 years that I have been disfellowshipped from the JW society. My father passed three years ago he was very involved with the organization as was my mother all of my life. I was born into the truth (jw lingo). I have experienced the night terrors, guilt, fear of death that she speaks of. I feel better just knowing I am not alone.

As a former JW, I appreciated reading the author's personal story. It's very gratifying to hear this organization called a "cult." I was lucky to escape and I am glad the author told her story.

I found this story sad at because you had a bad life, and you were able to survive sort of.

I couldn't put it down. I've been interested in JW's for years. I've read other books that talked about their major theological points, but his book filled in a lot of the gaps for me. Her story and personality made it really engaging as well.

The contents of this book are real according to my own involvement years ago with this religion. I am now happy in a religion that shows a lot of love, children are precious to the parents and families and should someone stray, they are still loved with the hopes of their returning.

I will preface my review by stating that I have never been a Jehovah’s Witness and that my knowledge of this organization is, in fact, limited. The first aspect that drew me to “I am Jezebel: A Jehovah’s Witness Breaks Her Silence” was the title. The second was the cover which is an image of a young woman whose ability to speak is inhibited by a single piece of duct tape. In a way, you can say that this image is perfect for the saddening story that Jezebel tells. This book is relatively short and I read it in the span of an afternoon. From the moment I started it, I could not stop reading! This book was horrific and heartbreaking but an entirely engrossing read. Jezebel, the author, is a strong woman who knew her own mind in the midst of a patriarchal JW culture that encouraged women to be silent and submissive. I am thankful to her for finally daring to break the silence and for sharing her story with others. Definitely an eye-opening book!

My only criticism is that this book is too short. As a former ex JW, the author is excellent at putting her experiences down in an enlightening manner

A short, easy read with a wealth of good, common sense. If you were a "born in" or your parents joined when you were young, this book is for you. CONGRATULATIONS on finding your freedom, Jezebel!

Stephen Few has a rare talent for explaining apparently opaque concepts in simple terms, but without simplifying the subject. This book starts from the *very* beginning and provides the reader with a solid understanding of the basics of chart design, including when to use a table vs a graph, what types of tables and graphs to use for what kinds of data, and why certain graphical features are more effective than others. Throughout, Few maintains a plain, readable writing style that is never patronizing even when spelling out seemingly obvious points (e.g., use a table if you need to look up a specific value). His patient tone and simple presentation end up guiding you through some unexpectedly sophisticated waters of design almost without your even realizing you've gone anywhere. In addition to the design coverage, Few covers some (very) basic statisics, how to adjust for inflation, rgb values of a nice selection of colors to use in graphs, how to make box graphs in Excel, and many other workaday details that make the book immediately useful. Most of the charts in the book are made in Excel, showing that you don't need advanced design software to make attractive, clear charts. The book itself is a beautiful large hardback. This is the source of my one complaint: its large size makes it somewhat difficult to just pop off the shelf and flip through to find something. If you want to learn how to design good tables and graphs, get it.

At first I loved this book. I felt like I was getting the hard fast rules of Data Viz in no uncertain terms. About 2/3 of the way through I hated this book. I felt like I was only getting rules of Data Viz. About 3/4 of the way through, I loved this book. I felt like I had learned the rules, so now I can break them on purpose and be able to explain the reason why.Thank you, Stephen Few for all of your guidance and input, you make the community of Data Viz a better place.

I have been a fan of techniques for improving visual information and information design starting with the Tufte book in 1983. Stephen Few has provided analysts, planners, and other people responsible for turning data into information a great service with this book. With technical books it can sometimes be difficult for the enthusiasm of the author to shine through. It is clear that Mr. Few is passionate about information design. Unlike other some books in the field this comprehensive study is practical as well - everything is presented using tools available in Microsoft Excel. Users are able to immediately relate the information in the book to the ability residing in their desktop. Some of the book would be easy to dismiss as basic information. I thought to skip around but there were surprising gems in the first few chapters where background information is described. If you have only one book on visualizing data, this would be the one to purchase.

First a disclaimer: I have not read Edward Tufte's "The Visual Display of Quantitative Information." I have looked through "Envisioning Information" however, and I found this book by Stephen Few to be more helpful to me. While I love the infographics that can be seen in publications like Wired Magazine an the New York Times (and Envisioning Information), I am an analyst, not a designer. My tools are Excel and Powerpoint, not Adobe Illustrator and Flash. As an analyst I am comfortable with numbers, but I also want others to see what I see, and I want them to be able to see it quickly instead of getting lost in table after table. This is where Show Me The Numbers fits in. It is a book designed to help you communicate with others. Here's a quick walk through Show Me The Numbers:Ch 1 - IntroductionSince the advent of spreadsheet software tables and graphs have become increasingly popular and easy to make. Unfortunately those easy to make tables and graphs are not always made to be easy to read and interpret. The purpose of Stephen Few's book is to help you decide when to use tables, when to use graphs, and how to create them in a manner that will most effectively show the message you are trying to present.Ch 2 - Numbers Worth KnowingThis chapter is fundamental for readers without a basic understanding of statistics, and a refresher for the rest of us. For example, an 'average' refers to a measure of central tendency. But depending on the numbers you may want to use the mean, the median, the even the mode.In addition to introducing these concepts, the author shows a few ways that this information can be shown in tables and graphs.Ch 3 - Fundamental Concepts of Tables and GraphsIn this chapter Stephen Few starts to give you some ideas on how to present information, including when to use tables versus when to use graphs and how to properly lay them out depending on whether you are showing quantitative information or qualitative information.Ch 4 - Fundamental Variations of TablesAfter you've figured out to use a table from chapter 3, this chapter will be next on the reading list. Here you will learn more about showing quantitive and categorical data, and options for grouping data.Ch 5 - Fundamental Variations of GraphsJust like the tables section, this chapter gives you the basics of various graphs that you can use, including nominal comparisons, time series, ranking, correlation, and a few others. There are a few design characteristics in here, including how to use fill patterns, line styles, and colors to distinguish between various groups of data. Once you see the bad examples you will instantly realize how common bad design is among business users. At the end of the chapter is a section designed to test your understanding with different scenarios. You get to choose whether you would use a table or a graph, what kind of table or graph, and anything else you might do. At the end of the book is an appendix with the authors suggestions to compare your choices.Ch 6 - Visual Perception and Quantitative CommunicationIn this chapter the author breaks away from table and graph design for a briefing on how humans see, interpret, and remember data. Humans have quirks in the way they pull information in, and this chapter will begin to give you some ideas on how you can use that to your advantage (and what things you should try to avoid).Ch 7 - General Design for CommunicationThis chapter follows on the knowledge gained in chapter 6 and shows how it can be applied to tables and graphs. The author emphasizes Edward Tufte's principle of the data-ink ratio. If the ink doesn't help to show the data, it should be removed. A few of the other techniques are grouping data, proper sequencing, and adding text to explain what is being shown.I especially think the point on describing the who, what, when, and where of the data in your presentation is important. This type of metadata is almost always unnoticed by the user, but it adds greatly to the presentation when completed properly.Ch 8 - Table DesignThis chapter continues to build on chapter 4, adding in the principles learned in chapters 6 and 7. If you've ever used dark black fill lines to separate every cell of a table you need to read this chapter. Twice. Please. The end of the chapter has a few exercises for you to practice what you just learned, and of course there are answers in the back of the book.Ch 9 - General Graph DesignJust as chapter 8 builds on chapter 4, this chapter builds on chapter 5 while adding in ideas from 6 and 7. The author shows why it's important to carefully consider the scales used in a graph, and how different scales can be used, accidentally or not, to misrepresent the information being considered. He then shows why you should use 2D graphs versus the horrendous 3D graphs that Excel lets you use.Ch 10 - Component Level Graph DesignAny time you decide to use a graph, you also need to decide what type of graph you want to use. Certain relationships may lend themselves better to scatter plots, while others may work better as a bar chart for instance. This chapter will help you decide which type of chart to use and help you to properly format it for maximum clarity.Ch 11 - Design Solutions for Multiple VariablesMany of the times you are analyzing data you will be looking at separate groups that must be compared against each other. This chapter will get you started showing complex relationships.Ch 12 - The Interplay of Standards and InnovationThe final chapter simply tells you to start thinking for yourself about design choices in tables and graphs. Every business is different, and everyone will have their own needs. Pay attention to what works and what doesn't. Be consistent in your design, and everyone can benefit.RecommendationThis is one of those books where after reading it I felt like saying 'no duh.' But it's information that's so simple that no one bothers to implement it. After reading this book I feel much more conscience of the choices I make in my tables, and I feel like they are already starting to improve. I think this book is well worth picking up and keeping as a handy reference for making tables and graphs.

This is a beautifully designed, easy-to-understand book that you could sit down and read straight through, or use as a textbook (it has lots of exercises), or as a reference book (very thorough and well organized). I borrowed it from the library and liked it so much I got my own copy. The examples are taken from the business world, but the principles apply equally to other kinds of writing. (I'm an editor working primarily on academic texts, and I'd recommend it unhesitatingly to clients or colleagues.) The style is engaging. The examples are easy to follow. The layout is just gorgeous. A keeper!
