Maya Banks will not be digging into my pocket to buy her junk. This book was rediculous and offensive. I really wished I hadNOT ordered this trilogy at once but rather had sampled the first book and then decided to purchase or NOT the rest. I enjoy erotica. I even enjoyed 50 Shades of Gray despite the 6th grade writting skills. But this book was a canvas of degradation of women. His kink is mixed with anger and punishment as well as humiliation exposing Mia to getting used and raped by the other men.I was insulted bordering on traumatized. That my friends is NO turn on and for those of you who were I sugest you examine the sadistic-masochistic thread that runs deep within you.As if that were not enough, Mia still pines for and accepts this piece of crap nto her life. I truly doubt any man like that could commit to women as he views them like a piece of meat let alone he is portrayed as a future potential husband and father. PRETTY ASCARY!!!. Repulsive storyline. I don't know what the deal is with Maya Banks but she does a diservice to women everywhere portraying them as door mats and confusing abuse with romance. What a sell out. I am embarrased I bought this junk trilogy. Too bad I could not give it NO STARS. I want the time I spent readig this trash back.

Ok so I've wanted to read this author's work for some time. Anticipation, excitement over finally getting to only to be disappointed. This is my first book by Maya Banks and I really was on the fence of like /dislike. First Gabe, the lead male, just came off bosey and uncaring most of the time instead of alpha dominant Hottness and Mia, well she wasn't a strong female lead. I mean some of the things Gabe made her do, she did no questions. What? I mean WTF!!! Second, that contract no just no, it's not let's discuss my expectations and go over your questions or confusion it's sign and be my slave do as I say with no mind of your own. Third... all I'm going to say is Paris that would have and should have been Mia's wake up call, but no she will follow blindly for love. Ugh God save me from weak minded and willed females!!! Love or no love have some respect for yourself or no one else will either! Sadly I already bought the second in this series so I'll probably read it at some point. 2.5 stars

Ok... This review may have a few spoilers, so stop reading if you don't want to know. This book started out too similar to Fifty Shades for me, the contract, the whole "I own you" and the bondage sex... And then it went way too far it some places for my taste. He lets other guys touch her and basically assault her while she's tied up in a hotel room in Paris (because he tied her up and made her give him a blow job in front of others without warning her first!) and even though she hated it she doesn't blame him at all? Really?!Not too mention the amount of things he does to her with no warning throughout the rest of the book - insert anal plug here - and she just goes along with it... But supposedly she is "different" to all the others.I just found some parts far too disturbing for my particular tastes, some of the sex scenes are hot but others were just too much pain and forcefulness for me.I gave three stars because I liked some of the other characters and I want to read their books (hopefully they aren't as disturbing as the first)... But honestly? Gabe is no where near what I believe a main male character should be and behave like - even if he is into kinky sex - and it really brought the book down for me that I didn't like him.

I wanted this to be the better written 50 shades; unfortunately it was disappointing all the way around. Let's start with the hero, Gabe. He is just some Dom wanna be who is ultimately too weak to protect his woman. He lets her down time and time again to the point where another man physically abuses her. Why she forgives and runs back to him is a mystery. Heroine was such a twit I can't even remember her name and I just finished the book. College grad (never says what her major is) works part-time in bakery and basically mooches off her older, richer brother while secretly lusting after his best friend and business partner. That's it, that's her whole life. Nitwit Gabe presents her with bondage contract (that everyone knows isn't legally binding because, duh, slavery was abolished a long damn time ago) this makes me seriously doubt his business acumen. What he should have had her sign was a non-disclosure agreement, which he never does. Like all Dom wanna be's Gabe is obsessed with anal play (yawn) and makes the forgettable heroine wear butt plugs all day as punishment. She is not allowed to remove them and not allowed to wear panties. Seriously, does this woman never need to have bowel movements? Lubricant gets warm and runny people - I'd hate to see the chairs she was sitting in at work and God forbid she ever farted or sneezed and sent the damn thing shooting across the room. Stupid, stupid, stupid.

Starts off very 50 Shades - which was not really necessary given the circumstances. We have Gabe Hamilton, 38 and Mia Crestwell, 24 who have known one another for years. Gabe is partnered with Mia's brother in business and a long standing friendship. Gabe has long felt something more than "brotherly love" for Mia, but has not acted on it for a host of reasons. Mia also felt an attraction to Gabe since her teens. Given the background, was the whole "contract" really necessary? Gabe could have/should have handled it differently. Ok, maybe it would have made for a boring story, but there could have been other ways Mia and Gabe become involved...As the story goes on, I couldn't understand how Mia could so easily accept some of the things Gabe did to her. The incident in Paris, for example. I mean WTF, how could she forgive him for that.I forged on because I liked the other characters. Specifically Ash and Jace. I want to see where the story goes from here. Not the best romance series out there, but it's up to you.

This is the same book as "Bobbin Lacemaking" by the same author. The projects are well thought out, but do tend to focus on edgings; I prefer the samplers that make bookmarks, personally.Still, it's a solid set of examples, and really readable, with good context and advice.

This is a really great book for learning to make bobbin lace. It was recommended by a friend who is teaching me bobbin lace, and it's one of the few older books you can still find occasionally. It does call for a 40/2 linen thread especially spun for bobbin lace, which is pretty fine. The author does not care for cotton thread, but that is the most sensible thing to use as a beginner, specifically, a size 20 crochet cotton is very good. The lessons start out very simply and build skills with each new pattern. It is much more than a collection of patterns. The author explains some different types of lace grounds and takes the reader through making each one. The diagrams and writing are very clear and easy to understand. I would recommend this book as a must-have for a beginner.

I love this book!! I knew nothing about Bobbin lacemaking, but I wanted to learn. Very easy to understand and follow! I have done all of the sample pieces and they turned out EXACTLY like the pictures! Bobbin lace is a beautiful art!

You need this if you are just strting out with bobbin lace!

I had no idea what I was getting into with this craft. This book opens a whole new world. Instructions are easy to follow. The author learned on her own and has passed on her knowledge in clear and easy to follow instructions. Very helpful & gives me hope that I may actually learn this craft.

Excellent explanations and pictures for beginners. It emphasizes techniques that can be apply later into more complex lacemaking.

I'm enjoying this book very much. Ms. Southard is very clear in her instructions and I'm learning a lot. I have not gotten to the more advanced patterns, but I'm sure she will make it easy.

This turned out to be a thin booklet with 16 pages, not what I expected.Have returned the item and will get my money back.

Product as described.

Review

“Lots of great gems for men here: about understanding (and improving) their own dating patterns, about how to screen potential partners for likely trouble and how to be happy in a relationship. Dr. Smith knows what he’s talking about, using a wide range of helpful case examples—of failure and success—in this very encouraging book.”—Bill Eddy, lead author of Splitting: Protecting Yourself While Divorcing Someone with Borderline or Narcissistic Personality and co-author of Dating Radar

As a divorce attorney of over 14 years, I regularly see men in my office who are devastated and baffled as to why their marriage is ending and why the wife has decided to take them to the cleaners, both financially and emotionally. This book is for men who don't want to find themselves in that position. This book is for men who don't want to waste years and years with the wrong woman only to lose half of their retirement/paycheck to a person who didn't value them to begin with. This is the book I will give my 17 year old son to read before he ever gets into that first relationship. Life is too short and precious to waste investing time, money, and love with a person who is toxic. If you are contemplating whether a new person is right for you, or whether your spouse is right for you...and especially if your own bad habits are causing you to make costly love decisions...the Tactical Guide offers great advice and great insight for both men and women who want healthy and lasting relationships. One of the best books on relationships I have ever read.

The book is a quick, funny, engaging read. Shawn Smith is full of fun turns of phrase and anecdotes. The title is a bit infelicitous. It suggests a smarmy book on pick-up artistry. The subtitle - "How Men Can Manage Risk in Dating and Marriage" - accurately portrays the content, which is standard self-help relationship psychology from a straight man's point of view. I appreciate the book's engagement with the psychological literature - many self help books eschew statistically grounded measurements of human behavior.I particularly value the book for its pro-male, pro-female stance. Smith is able to discuss important risks of dating and marriage for men - diastrously asymmetric legal outcomes in divorce; inaccurate societal assumptions about domestic violence - from a positive, relationship-affirming point of view. He takes on these inequities and toxic feminist worldviews without the angry, bitter, misogynist tack typical of the Men's Rights Activist or Red Pill communities. Smith makes it clear that unabashed masculinity is something healthy heterosexual women seek and cherish in men; this message is lost in more "politically correct" self-help books, to the detriment of men misled into trying to auto-feminize their way to success in love.Unfortunately I didn't find the core of this book - Smith's concept of a "bright triad" of clarity, maturity, and stability in high quality women - to be particularly convincing. I found the material to be a mishmash of general relationship skills and some gee-whiz material on women suffering from mental illness, addiction, or personality disorders. Maybe better editing would have made this categorization of traits more clear. (At a lower level, the copyediting in the book is not great. Duplicated sentences, missing words, and extra words are frequent.) But I fear that the concept itself may just not be that strong. On the topic of general relationship skills, I found Gottman and Silver's _The Seven Principles for Making Marriage Work_ to be more cogently organized and a wonderful read for men and women alike. My own interest in this book stemmed from my relationship history - getting ready to return to dating after two relationships in a row where I poured energy into fine young women who coolly resisted commitment. I came away disappointed. Before buying this, I read Robert Glover's _No More Mr Nice Guy_. It was revelatory to the point of being devastating in unpacking my own contribution to these failures. Glover does not say much on how to pick women well, so I wanted to know Smith's take on selecting for women with an appetite for commitment. Smith has nothing to say on the matter, and in fact, I struggle to pin down where these ex-girlfriends go wrong on his bright triad rubric. Furthermore, I was hoping for advice on gleaning information about compatibility on a few-date "tactical" timescale. Smith suggests waiting a year beyond the initial 12-18 month honeymoon period to emotionally evaluate a prospective partner before making hard-to-reverse commitments. I was disappointed to read that, as 2.5 year heartbreaking roads to nowhere are exactly what I'm looking to head off at the time of writing. A couple more of those and I'll be squarely middle-aged and never-married. If your past resembles mine - a history of failing to find commitment rather than jumping into it with disastrous partners - I enthusiastically recommend Glover. Glover at least pushes the reader to be a "good ender," e.g. to break up quickly and decisively when there seems to be a poor fit. That advice is far more tactical than anything here. All told, this book is not bad, but I feel it does not live up to its promise.

Men, read this book. Much more so if you consider yourself to be the romantic type, or one that dreams of happily ever after endings. Relationships can descend from fun and romantic to hell, and rather quickly, and the judicial system as it is today is not set up for you to win. Dr Smith reminds us, in a non-nonsensical, straight forward way, that we need to treat this area of our lives as if it were a business, because legally that is what it could eventually turn into. That you need to evaluate and analyze the option in front of you, and seriously consider and weigh in its pros and cons. He tells you to screen for certain psychological traits in women, but also to look and identify these in yourself. He reminds us to consider the legal ramifications of such decision making. The teachings in this book are not only helpful to men, but to women as well, and it’s a invaluable and important read. I highly recommend it.

Fantastic book, it tackles issues of yourself you may need to work on, as well as highlighting qualities and values you should look for in a potential female partner. Honestly, this book is not purely for men, women would get a lot of valuable information out of this as well. It's full of so much valuable information on relationships and clinical viewpoints that I find it hard to imagine many people walking away from this without learning something.Couldn't recommend more for young men as well, I'm 22 and I got this for hearing horror stories on marriage. Also, despite a few grammatical errors it's concise and flows well. Making it both easy to digest and quick to read, which I mean in a great way.

I wish this book had been around in my mid-teens. Fathers may tell you how sex works, but they don't warn sons about toxic women and how to identify them to avoid a lifetime of regret. I bought my 13 year old grandson a copy and he is reading it and says that he likes learning the why to poor choice girls and the identification of same.

Content is valid and accurate, IMO. Writing (and editing) is lucid, and flows well. Appreciate structure of knowing one's self first, then evaluating a woman as potential a GF/partner/mate/wife. The simplification of categorizing a partner as GF, fiancee/intended, or wife is genius. In some ways (e.g. evaluating women as partners) this is a broader hashing out of the famous (infamous?) hot-crazy matrix (search for it on YouTube).Bought it for my son and hope he reads it. Wish I'd read this when I was his age (22), but useful also to a single man at any age. Never too late to learn the lessons in this book.

Hunger Makes Me a Modern Girl: A Memoir, by Carrie Brownstein

Review

"In the vast library of recent rock memoirs... Ms. Brownstein’s may be the one that most nakedly exposes its author’s personality."—The New York Times“Carrie Brownstein writes the way she plays guitar, with raw honesty, passion, and great humor in Hunger Makes Me a Modern Girl.”—Vanity Fair"A memoir that's both candid and brave, and a powerful tribute to the power of music to heal, to connect, to break you down and then make you whole again……Brownstein's music has always helped people feel like they really do belong somewhere, and her wonderful memoir does the same thing.” - NPR “Meet your fierce and funny new comrade-in-arms. [Brownstein] takes us on a backstage tour of her life, from quirky kid-dom to angsty teen-dom to the feminist subculture of the riot grrl scene to not quite superstardom… Chronicling Sleater-Kinney’s tumultuous history and her own volatility – the tours that electrified fans, one brutal, ballsy concert at a time; the anxiety that often plagued her—Brownstein illuminates the euphoric highs and crushing lows of a life spent both on the fringes and in the spotlight.”—O, The Oprah Magazine“[Hunger Makes Me a Modern Girl] is earnest, endearing, at times angry, critical, confessional, raw… [it's] the compelling chronicle of a born performer, from fandom to stardom… The richness of the writing ensures that Hunger will satisfy die-hard Sleater-Kinney fans as well as those who’ve never heard a note.” —Kirkus Reviews “Brownstein is as nimble, articulate, and honest a writer of literary nonfiction as she is a musician, actress, and cultural critic.”—Vogue.com  “A sharp, emotionally intimate new memoir.”—People“[Brownstein’s] honesty is disarming, and buoyed by the same dry wit that makes her scenester-lacerating IFC series Portlandia so good. That’s how she artfully manages to transcend the backstage tropes of the rock-bio genre, and why Hunger should become the new handbook for every modern girl (and yes, boys, too) looking for the courage to pursue a life less ordinary.” –Entertainment Weekly “A stand out memoir… A journey to self-possession and a portrait of an era.” –Vogue “She can play, but man, can Carrie Brownstein write…Her blazing memoir is lit by the same flair for adventure, fearless inquiry, and honesty that mark her gritty licks and trenchant vocals.”—ELLE “Hunger doesn’t try to enumerate every hat she’s ever worn, only what emboldened her to keep experimenting.”—TIME Magazine “Solid musings from the Portlandia star/feminist punk hero.” —Cosmopolitan “Brownstein in an American indy culture avatar — funny, smart and always on point.” —Los Angeles Times “Brownstein’s writing is strongest when she describes the passion and sheer joy she experiences connecting with music.” —BUST Magazine “(Brownstein) peels away any residual glamor and mythology of the Riot Grrrl movement and tells her tale of suburban upbringing and liberation.”—Newsweek “Modern Girl offers a stark look at the strain that touring life took on Brownstein; she talks openly about her battles with depression and anxiety, including a difficult-to-read account of her nervous breakdown, which ultimately ended the band.”—Paper Magazine “Life on tour isn’t all rock ’n’ roll fantasy, as Sleater-Kinney icon and Portlandia cocreator Carrie Brownstein attests in her corrosively honest, impossible-to-put-down memoir, Hunger Makes Me a Modern Girl—both a journey to self-possession and a portrait of an era, as indelible as one of her songs.”—Vogue.com “In her new memoir, [Brownstein] tells the story of how she found salvation in music.” —Out Magazine  “To find her calling, Carrie is going to experience hard work, sacrifice, and independence that makes her thrive.” —Buzzfeed  “Revealing and raw.” —The Daily Beast “Few reign power and femininity like Brownstein whose haunting vocals and soul punching lyrics leave listeners rattled, in a good way, the way only truly great music can — something Hunger Makes Me a Modern Girl is bound to do as well.” —Bustle “[Brownstein] is an incredible observer, with a gift for phrases and imagery and making sense of memory… it’s not hard to predict that Brownstein’s book will go beyond the usual rock-star victory-lap and turn out to be one of the wisest and most poignant memoirs in quite a while.”—Salon  “[A] moving story about Brownstein’s life before, during, and after the rise of America’s greatest rock band.” —Flavorwire “Brownstein writes with an impressive level of self-awareness and wry humor, even when she’s tackling difficult moments in her life." —Refinery29 “The Sleater-Kinney guitarist, writer, and Portlandia and Transparent actress has always been curiously eloquent. That quality has become obvious over the course of eight albums with bandmates Corin Tucker and Janet Weiss... and now in her refreshingly forthright new memoir, Hunger Makes Me a Modern Girl.”—SPIN “Brownstein’s Modern Girl offers a lot of value for a wide range of readers. Music historians get a first-hand POV of one of punk rock’s most interesting scenes, aspiring artists will take away Brownstein’s mandatory perspective and casual readers get a damn fine read.”—Paste Magazine“Sleater-Kinney guitarist Carrie Browstein debunks the nostalgic clichés of rock-star life on the road. Instead, she candidly recounts the panic attacks and stress-induced shingles she experienced on tour.” —The Cut “Hunger is a testament to the fact that the transient and permanent are, in fact, intertwined.”—The Jewish Daily Forward“Sleater-Kinney’s Carrie Brownstein will make you laugh and cry in Hunger Makes Me a Modern Girl…A hunger to be noticed, a hunger to perform and a hunger to be loved are clear motivators for Brownstein as she looks back on her childhood at the start of her entirely self-written and often funny book.” –NY Daily News “Engrossing… For fans of Sleater-Kinney, it’s immensely compelling, particularly because Brownstein writes crisply, insightfully, and without vanity… Brownstein’s memoir shows that she can keep a secret. More important, it shows how compelling she is when she opens up.”—The A.V. Club “[Brownstein's] writing is sharp, erudite, and witty, and it makes Hunger my favorite music memoir since Just Kids… [it] arrives at a moment of unprecented reverence for the feminist rock memoir." —Pitchfork “Carrie Brownstein is the legendary guitarist in Sleater-Kinney, one-half of the comedic genius team responsible for “Portlandia” and, now, in a move that surprises no one, a brilliant memoirist.” –Spectrum “Sleater-Kinney guitarist and 'Portlandia' co-creator Carrie Brownstein’s reflections on performance and community will move and shake you.” —Huffington Post “Brownstein’s a great writer and Hunger is a smooth, electric read. She carries a lot of humor and gentle self-deprecation throughout the work.”—Consequence of Sound “Honest and irreverent, Brownstein shows herself to be a talented rock journalist and memoirist without losing the intelligence and humor her fans have come to expect.”—Nordstrom Blog The Thread “Sometimes it's nice to love a band just for their songs, without concern for their backstory, but when you get a chance to know where one of your all-time favorites comes from, and written in such a way where it feels like you've dived into a pool and like a cartoon, the whole world changes around you, it would be a crime not to indulge. Spend some time with Carrie, it'll be totally worth your while."—Lenny Letter “Carrie strikes a great balance of fond reminiscing and truthful (sometimes regretful) memories spent on the road, in the recording studio and moments of humility in her youth.”—AfterEllen “[Brownstein’s] memoir, looking back on those formative years with the band, offers the kind of intimacy and insight fans and enthusiasts will eagerly devour.”—Biographile “This portrait of a life lived above the realm of daily concern may be accurate if you’re a Rolling Stone or Beyonce, but the truth, for most moderately successful musicians, is that rock ‘n’ roll is mostly about hard work, uncomfortable sleeping arrangements, and a lot of carrying your own instruments. Which is why Carrie Brownstein’s new memoir, about her years with the band Sleater-Kinney, is so welcome.”—Biographile“What would it be like if all your dreams come true? For Carrie Brownstein, who grew up in the Riot Grrrl movement in the Pacific Northwest, they did: She started out playing in countless punk bands until settling on one with her BFF and romantic partner, Corin Tucker, which they eventually turned into the best rock band of all time, Sleater-Kinney. In Hunger Makes Me a Modern Girl, Brownstein recounts her time before worldwide fame, what Riot Grrrl meant to her as a young woman searching for her voice, and how rock 'n' roll saved her life.”—Cosmopolitan.com “In this dynamic memoir, Sleater-Kinney's Carrie Browstein tells her story of coming up through the 1990s feminist punk scene of the Pacific Northwest. Her portrait is vivid, transporting readers back to the intimate moments that sowed her own roots, and made her the cool-girl icon she is today. Brownstein is honest, funny, and, well, everything you want her to be.” —Bustle “Carrie Brownstein is brilliant and hilarious in Portlandia, and iconic as the singer for punk-rock band Sleater-Kinney, but her memoir Hunger Makes Me A Modern Girl reveals a more raw and vulnerable side to her.” —Bustle “From her rocky childhood to becoming part of the feminist punk-rock movement to her days as a comedic writer and actor, Brownstein brings us into the most intimate moments of her life.”—First Slice “For decades, the guitarist for the legendary Sleater-Kinney has been celebrated for her unapologetic queer politics and general bad-assery. When she became the co-creator and star of the IFC comedy series "Portlandia," we were introduced to her slippery wit as well. Her new memoir unveils a third Brownstein: a melancholy, intellectually rigorous introvert who's been musically unpacking the concept of family ever since her suburban Washington childhood fell apart.” —WordandFilm.com “Brownstein has written an absolute love letter to music, a gift to Sleater Kinney fans, and above all, an expertly crafted memoir.”—Lambda Literary “Brownstein has insightful things to say about growing up with a closeted gay dad and an anorexic mom, about how the creative process works, about the 'performance' of the audience at a concert, about the punk aesthetic.”—Newsday  “A performer through and through, she translates her story to the page with characteristically blunt humor and observational prowess.” —Village Voice “Brownstein is both an icon of pop culture and an astute observer of it.” —The Boston Globe “Carrie Brownstein’s local history as part of Sleater-Kinney is, for many of us, our own—and she has long been an articulate and funny and intelligent voice behind piercing guitar that left tatters behind.”—Willamette Week “Brownstein has a story to tell, and it doesn't include satirical sketches about a certain element of local culture… What Brownstein does instead is open a window into her turbulent, creative Northwest life.”—The Oregonian “For Sleater-Kinney fans, [Hunger Makes Me a Modern Girl] is an absolute must… The author writes focused and uncluttered prose, choosing the best, most telling details, as she recounts stories that show what it means to perform for the first time and what it means for a woman to be both a fan and a star in a staunchly male-dominated world. …It's revealing and riveting. On the page as in her songs, Brownstein finds the right words to give shape to experience.”—Kirkus starred review “A candid look at life in rock and roll in a deeply personal and revealing narrative of her life in music, as ardent fan, pioneering female guitarist, comedic performer on TV’s Portlandia, and luminary in the independent rock world.” —Publishers Weekly “[Brownstein's] memoir delivers on all counts, offering a sharp-eyed tale of a singular time in music and culture… A strong, engaging pop culture memoir: personal detail, a little dish, and a well-written look at what made the music, and the culture that spawned it, matter.” –Library Journal starred review “Brownstein flips easily from brainy ruminations on nostalgia, fandom, and record labels to trenchant stories about sexism, music journalism, and how a soy allergy—not drugs or alcohol—brought her to her knees on tour… her vivid Sleater-Kinney stories and descriptions of their albums are downright irresistible. Sleater-Kinney fans went nuts late last year when the trio broke their years-long hiatus, and Brownstein’s memoir will give them more to salivate over.”—Booklist“[Brownstein] looks back with a healthy balance of romanticism, critique, and humor... she has talent... Her writing is super solid, at times even gripping... You don’t need to be a superfan to appreciate someone’s well-told story about the inherent joy and strife that comes with being in a band; a person’s story about finding, then losing, then re-finding her destiny.”—Electric Literature“Brownstein has a gift for describing how collaboration works. She's got a clear critical grasp of how the push and pull between her and vocalist-guitarist Corin Tucker and the essential talents of drummer Janet Weiss made the powerful, abrasive, addictive music of Sleater-Kinney. And to that she adds an important personal perspective.”—Los Angeles Times"Deftly woven narrative….A brisk and fascinating work.” —Flavorwire "A document of self-actualization… [Brownstein’s] writing is measured, dispassionate, and well considered; it’s engaging for exactly those reasons. Her insight is some of the best on that era and subset of punk that’s been written." —Jezebel “Deeply felt and smartly unpacked…Essential reading…One of the best rock memoirs anyone is going to read in quite some time.”—Austin American Statesman “Her honesty is disarming, and buoyed by the same dry wit that makes her scenester-lacerating IFC series Portlandia so good. That’s how she artfully manages to transcend the backstage tropes of the rock-bio genre, and why Hunger should become the new handbook for every modern girl (and yes, boys, too) looking for the courage to pursue a life less ordinary.”—Entertainment Monthly “On the page, Brownstein comes across as funny, charming, self-deprecating and self-aware." —Williamette Week"It’s Brownstein’s ability to recount her decorous punk life that blazes through. It’s as if she’s sitting across from the reader sharing a friendly cup of coffee, bringing you up to speed on her latest musical adventures." —Slug Magazine“Is there anything [Brownstein] can’t do and do brilliantly?” —Cuepoint

If you want me to tell you all about Sleater-Kinney, Riot Grrrl, and Portlandia...I can't. I know nothing about any of these topics. I know that S-K were a band (and are, as they've reformed), and I have heard the term "Riot Grrrl" thrown around in books about music in the Nineties. And Portlandia is some show that I've heard of only in passing. So maybe I'm not the ideal audience for this book...but then again, maybe I am."Hunger Makes Me a Modern Girl," by Carrie Brownstein, was the subject of a review on the Onion's AV Club that I came across recently. The review piqued my interest in a book written, admittedly, by a musician whose work was (and still is) unknown to me. In much the same way that I let curiosity steer me towards Questlove's memoir without really knowing much about the Roots, I found myself interested in reading this book even though I was in the dark about Sleater-Kinney or Brownstein's other endeavors. For a non-fan, this is actually a really interesting, enjoyable book. The subject is not so much Brownstein's life (though it is the main thrust of it) as it is creativity, and her search for artistic fulfillment and meaning. Having a voice, having something to say, is the noblest reason to pursue artistic success, and Brownstein shows that she found that voice and that message through her work inside and outside of music. She shines a light on the music scene in the Northwest circa 1992, when Nirvana was hitting big and any band with a Seattle zip code and a wardrobe of flannel could find success (even though S-K, according to her, always remained on the margins of commercial success, they did find a rabid fan base that exists to this day). She also addresses the sexism that rock music has ingrained within it (reading some of the reviews S-K got that she includes in the book is cringe-worthy, even from the journalists who meant well). This memoir might be written for the S-K fan, but even non-fans like me can find their way through without too much of a map to navigate the various ups and downs of the band's history.I may not be the go-to guy on Sleater-Kinney or Carrie Brownstein's other projects, but that doesn't mean I can't enjoy her memoir. And I will likely be checking out S-K in the near future.

Without seeing Carrie Brownstein on a television talk show, I can guarantee my Kindle library list would never included "Hunger Makes Me a Modern Woman:A Memoir." However, seeing her guest appearance on theLate Night Show with Stephen Colbert revealed Brownstein as an intelligent, funny, articulate woman that I wanted to know more about. I am not a musician; I detest punk rock; know very little about the girl bands and the indie musical movement in the Northwest begun in the 1990s. Sure, I was familiar with the names Nirvana and Kurt Cobain, but that was the extent of my knowledge about the world of Carrie Brownstein, guitarist for the all-girl band Sleater-Kinney. I had never even heard of a band by that name, or the many other bands she mentions throughout her book. However, as I read this memoir, I became impressed and fascinated by her vocabulary and use of language. As a reader I connected more with her sharing herself as an avid reader, her disfunctional home life, and her deep introspection as she searched to understand herself: where she had been and where she was going. The string of evidently "well-known" bands and individual artists within this genre meant nothing to me. Yet, I found her word smithing compelling and most intriguing. For that reason, this book is worth reading. I never glimpsed the total woman I saw on the talk show, but saw glimmers of her here and there. The work certainly burst my stereotypical vision of punk rockers and busting stereotypes is always a good thing. I would love to see Brownstein pursue a literary career; if her use of language could keep me reading through all the material in this book that completely disinterested me, just imagine how enjoyable she could make a good fictional story!

I've been a fan of Sleater-Kinney since I first heard them in 1995, and wrote rave reviews of most of their albums through their career. My admiration for Carrie Brownstein has continued to grow as she explored side projects, blog writing, and of course blossomed into a sketch comedy genius with Fred Armisen in Portlandia. Those wanting a detailed account of how she got into music and who her influences are (Richard Baluyut of Versus and Christina Billotte of Slant 6) won't be disappointed. She explains why they picked the name Sleater-Kinney, which sounds like a law firm or a hospital. "But in the moniker could be whatever we wanted it to be. It could embody whatever and whoever we were."Yet in her memoir, she doesn't readily spill all the goods. Meaning, she still holds some cards close to her chest, reluctant to share all of her private matters. That's her right, but I feel putting "memoir" in the title is a bit of a misrepresentation, as it's pretty much exclusively about the band. Yes, she discusses her relationship with bandmate Corin Tucker in the early days and their breakup. She touches on her family history, her father's absence and belated coming out years later. Her being unceremoniously outed in a major music publication. I've always admired how Brownstein's demeanor navigated a wobbly balance between an awkward, gangly young woman and a strutting, badass gender neutral guitar hero. Yet she never actually discusses whether she's gay, bi or gender fluid, and does not talk about any relationships after Tucker. "Here's my memoir, but my life is none of your damn business." Okay, so Carrie is all business all the time it appears. She also talks about dealing with frequent panic attacks, but we never find out what the cause is, if she ever got a handle on it, or anything. So many questions unanswered.Apparently everything worked out, at least as far as Sleater Kinney had a trimphant reunion, album and tour, she wrote a book, and had several successful seasons with Portlandia. However not a word is mentioned about the show, nor of Fred. Not a single word. I don't know if Fred didn't want to be included, or she's saving it for her next book, but I feel slightly cheated. Nevertheless, Carrie is awesome, so I don't have the heart to dock more than one star.

I just can’t recommend this book. It was highly disturbing. I feel as if the killing of the cat and sister just took it too far.

I wish I had never chosen this as my Kindle First Read. I should have gone with my first instinct that it was too dark and unpleasant but after reading the sample I liked the writing style and the social worker Piper. If you make that same mistake this book is very different than the sample would lead you to believe. The story is told in alternating perspectives, mostly from husband Christopher and Wife Hannah, with interspersed chapters of the police interview with the social worker Piper. We see the happy couple, although I found it odd that they chose to work alternating schedules if they were so happy, and their introduction to Janie. The majority of the story is the day to day struggle that Hannah has with Janie everyday. This is told in excruciating detail and it’s a lot to take. You feel for Hannah but as a reader it was too much. I wasn’t surprised at what was supposed to be revealed towards the end of the book because I thought from the beginning that was what had happened. It’s hard to see Hannah left in such dire straights by her husband. The ending is abrupt and a lot is left unresolved. The author mentions in the acknowledgments that she had to have someone tell her to tone down the dark that most people can take. I think it should have been turned down way more. I have nothing but the utmost respect for what the author must deal with in her profession but this book is too dark and disturbing. She can write well but got lost too much in the minutiae of the story. All mothers remember well the newborn days and feedings but I can’t say I wanted to read all the detail that went into the depiction here.I like books that are suspenseful and surprising but that’s not this book. There’s no satisfying mystery solved. It’s just sad and dark.

Contains violence against animals. So sick and disturbing, I wish there were a zero stars category. Will never buy another book from this author again.

I'm not sure I've ever read such a crazy, intense, non-stop, haunting, anxiety producing novel...but only in the best and most desirable way. I didn't want it to end.Once this book has you in it's grips, it won't let go. I started it this morning and literally could not put it down. My poor husband probably feels deprived.Having received The Perfect Child free as a Kindle First February option, I honestly didn't have high expectations. These freebie books are hit or miss for me. Sometimes they're decent, sometimes they absolutely stink, and sometimes, they slowly mesmerize you with their intensity and unparalleled chaos. The Perfect Child was like that...it gripped me from the start and didn't let me go. The characters, particularly Hannah, were so beautifully tragic...she felt very real to me. I could relate so very much to her feelings, her anxieties...virtually everything. Having said that, at times I also felt frustrated, primarily with Christopher. His choices and actions were questionable, even during the best of times. But the character who had my jaw-dropping at virtually every turn of the page was Janie. HOLY COW! I don't want to say much for fear of giving anything away, but Janie may be the best "villain" I've read in years. Little girl was beyond vile!Is the story a bit predictable? I'd say yes, which is why I didn't give it a full 5 stars. One of the main threads was incredibly obvious to me, but that took nothing away from the story-line. And there were a couple twists which shocked me...not necessarily because they were unexpected, but because of how they actually occurred. There is also some animal torture/death, which is another deduction for me. I HATE animal torture in any book. Fair warning.I can't end this review without making the obvious comparisons to Baby Teeth. Clearly, Lucinda Berry was somewhat inspired by the Zoje Stage novel. There are many similar threads throughout...but the stories diverge enough to make them each incredibly readable in their own ways.I'm a fan, fellow readers. I haven't checked to see if this is Ms. Berry's first novel or not, but she has definitely become a must read author in my eyes. I'll be thinking about this novel for a long, long time.

Me and this book were like a bad blind date. Nothing worked.Be aware that there is a lot of vivid detail regarding child abuse, and there is also animal abuse. I'm not squeamish in the least, but, for me, the author went way overboard on this aspect. There are scenes I wish I hadn't read that I'd like to get out of my mind. Readers, in general, don't need to be assaulted with descriptive abuse in order to understand it.I could have, maybe not enjoyed, but appreciated the story despite the abundance of detail, if I'd liked the main characters. I didn't. The couple seems almost childish and naive, especially considering they are at the top of their medical fields. They don't communicate well. They take on a severely traumatized child without really understanding what they're getting into. And then they try to hide how bad things are.The writing style didn't engage me. So, as I said, a bad blind date.

I wish I could give this 0 stars. This book could be a horrible experience for people who have a problem reading graphic descriptions of child abuse, a cat being hurt and later deliberately killed with details of how and how the animal tried to fight back and live. Pregnant women and moms of infants will also find scenes hard to handle. I’m appalled and disgusted these were included and think others will be, also.If for some reason you finish the book, you’ll be rewarded with two twists, at least one of which you’ve probably already figured out and an ending that feels like pages were missing.I’m sorry I chose this for my February First read as a Prime Member and even asked for anothe pick, they said no and to write a review instead so here it is.Please stay far, far away!

The Kindle edition is NOT recommended as it will fail to load the proper icons. The fact that the type for keyboard shortcuts do not transfer in the Kindle edition makes it useless to purchase. Caveat emptor.

The book is superb but the package I received was defective as it was soft leaving the heel of the book partially damaged. This is the second time that I purchased a book with the same complication. I purchased other books from amazon without this problem as the package was hard enough to protect the book inside.

Having always had PCs, I purchased my first Mac this December. Encouraged by the intuitive nature of Apple products, I was able to use the device adequately at the first sitting. But I was then intrigued by what else I might do with my Mac. The public library offered various books concerning older IOS and I found these inadequate in moving me forward in using my new toy. Thus, I was happy to be able to order this "hot off the press" book.I was amazed-- and admittedly-- a bit intimidated by its size. But the manual, like the Apple device, is user friendly. So far, I have found it most useful as a reference. The chapters are well named and some information is given in supplementary boxes so that new users are kept up to speed. So far, this is a singularly helpful reference. I hope to read it in its entirety as time allows.

I love this series, Ive been trying to use an old yosemite version my friend gave me, but lots has changed since then and since I'm new to the iMac and apple world This is the most comprehensive manual there is. I have bought other manuals on my Kindle app but the ability to hold and search for what I need in the paperback is the fastest way for me to get my questions answered.Clear concise and well organized if you're only buying one this should be it

I find Davis Pouge's Missing Manuals a much faster way to solve my "how do I" questions with all my Apple equipment. The online Apple menus usually present too many options to review in order to accomplish a task. MacOS Mojave is a timely addition to my library of Pouge Manuals.

I bought this because of my previous positive experience with other editions in the series. I like the way the information is organized. You can read just the sections you need at the time and save the rest for later. Chock full of handy tips and shortcuts that you would probably never find just using the built in Mac help system. Well worth the cost.

I like the level of detail in this book. It's a great reference and fun to read.

I have several Missing Manual books in my library in both the Kindle and Paperback format. However, O'Reilly Media needs to address the reported issues mentioned for this book and update the book's title accordingly. See the Amazon reviewer's headline "Do not buy on Kindle" for details. In addition, you can see the reported icon issue for yourself by selecting “Look inside” under Kindle. I look forward to purchasing this book in the Kindle format after the reported issues are resolved.
