It came in good condition, I bought it new, and it seems to be like the hard cover option for the most part. But for some reason the book that I have references the compound interest tables that should be in the appendix but the tables aren't in the appendix. Very annoying especially since that is the main reason I purchased the book, to have access to those tables, so I could do my homework more easily like my professor suggested.

The book is easy to read. There's a lot examples in it. I like it very much.

Good book, easy to read. I wish that the examples stood on their own, most of them are a continuation of the previous example from an earlier section. Other than that, it's a great reference book to hold on to.

Exactly the same book as the hard cover, but at a lot lower of a price. I would definitely recommend this to anyone that needs it. It is a bit bulky, but then again who cares when you can save all the money and weight of a hard-cover.

Not the easiest book to understand.I have to mention the most annoying thing in this book:Example problems often reference previous example problems. Thats normal. BUT this book builds on that to a stupid degree. I think the author was lazy and the editors didn't care. Those example problems are very hard to follow.Example (numbers are not actual): problem 6.8 references problem 6.7, but 6.7 references problems 6.6 and doesnt have its own dataset.

The chapter "Awful Poems" is worth the price of admission on its own because of how well it does just that...then follows up by showing how to recognize bad poetry and what can be done about it.

I LOVE this book! It has made all the difference in my attempts to write and understand poetry. A friend in my MFA program (I was studying fiction) recommended it, and I am so glad he did. It is a well-written how-to book with intelligent and heart-felt observations and information about poetry, marvelous example poems, and inspiring exercises for beginning to advanced poets. I was sad to learn of the recent death of the book's author, Steve Kowit. We're grateful that he gave us this marvelous book.

If it meant research, I took a trip to the library. An adventure in trying different styles! I would put my mind, body and soul into what I would put on paper. We all know that writers have to write.Some of my old poems were redone with his ideas. My friends saw my revised poems and went "Oh WOW! And this is from the studies from this book?" A compliment for me and applause for his lessons.I highly suggest any poet, beginner, intermediate or advanced, to do read this book. AND I would suggest going back and redoing the exercises from the start. It was from my open-mindedness and my perserverance that would have me do each exercise. It wasn't work anymore, it was fun!!

I was so excited when I purchased this book. I got this because growing up I had read my friends book: "10,000 Dreams Interpreted: An Illustrated Guide to Unlocking the Secrets of Your Dreamlife" and it was amazing! Since both are written by the same author, I assumed this was a new and improved version. Sadly, it is NOTHING like the original. The previous/original book seemed more detailed and accurate. Half of the topics in this book just don't exist or if they do exist it's a vague and inaccurate interpretation. I looked up Cat because my mom dreamed of OUR CAT, and it just said "bad luck" in more or less words. I tried to look up "Pet" and it just isn't in there. I was super excited to get this in hopes that it would help me understand my dreams better. Instead it reads like a fortune cookie and is very general. Even those there are 12,000 topics I still struggled to find what I was looking for. I ended up returning it.

Sometimes the meaning may not be close to what your dream was about, just use your imagination; the meanings in are either right on or close to.

Lots of dream topics, but all very vague. Not a lot to them, so if you want an in depth idea of what the meaning to a dream meant, this book probably isn't what you are looking for. I still end up on Google, searching on one of the many websites out there that have dream interpretation.

This book is not as 'detailed' in it's definitions as I'd hoped it would be. But a co-worker and I have fun with it. We are currently using it as a cross-reference for another dream interpretation author's book.

I purchased this for a friend so I'm not sure how she liked it! However, after looking at other books, this seemed to be an easy and quick way to interpret dreams. It was alphabetical, clear and concise. Exactly what I was looking for!

This is a superb, eminently readable, and balanced overview of the child welfare system. It contains true, compelling, and representative stories of children and families which were caught up in the system for various reasons. The names of the children and their families were changed in order to protect their privacy. It's a miracle this book could ever be published, due to the strict protections of privacy in the law. In the process of telling the stories, the authors explain how the child welfare system works (or doesn't work). It turns out, like any human institution, the system has its flaws, but there are almost always very valid reasons for why things are done the way they are. Myths are debunked, and the system is shown for what it is - a sometimes flawed, but nonetheless vitally important support for children whose parents and society have failed them. There are numerous references in the back of the book to support the assertions in the text. The book is about 20 years old, but I believe it should still be pertinent and relevant today.I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in children or the child welfare system. If you would like to make a difference, please consider volunteering as a CASA or Guardian Ad Litem.

This book is overly critical of social workers. It should never have been written.

I've become an almost compulsive reader about our juvenile justice system and foster care since it seems the vast majority of the students I teach have some contact with at least one. In one school I taught at, at least 70% of the students were either in foster care, group homes or had a juvenile justice caseworker. For many of these kids, their child advocate (CASA is a fantastic organization) was the only person with their best interests at heart.The more books I read, the more I realize that I'm reading the same thing over and over again, and seeing it in my classroom. The problem is that there doesn't seem to be a whole answer... One answer could be books like this that require the courts, and the system to open up their books so that outsiders can see what is going on. In this book, it seems as if services the children received were better than average, but that may be a perception I have from working in inner city areas where services are going to be less accessible to families in crisis. This book presents a fair, mostly even-handed look at the system, and the issues. It doesn't blame a particular group, but seeks to share the problems with everybody interacting in the system. This is a nice change from the often one-sided books that play the blame game.

This is a textbook of the juvenile dependency system that reads like a page-turner novel. I was unable to put it down for 2 days. The authors' treatment of their material is even-handed and true-to-life. I have worked for the past 4 years as a Court-Appointed Special Advocate and Guardian Ad Litem for these children in my local juvenile court and the cases featured in the book closely mirror the actual cases I've seen over and over again in the courts. The book raises problems in the system to which there are no easy answers, and the authors don't attempt to offer any simplistic solutions: What does the system do with severely emotionally disturbed kids who blow through one placement after another? How do you know when to give up on parents and terminate parental rights? Do you wait until the child's crucial childhood years are mostly over, waiting for the parents to get their act together? How do we place children in good homes when there is such a shortage of foster and adoptive families? I urge anyone interested to get involved with the system as a volunteer. There are over 700 advocate programs around the country and the minimum time commitment is only 12 hours a month.

This book kept me up every night for the past week until I finished it. A fascinating and thoughtful look at the juvenile dependency and delinquency systems, the authors get it right. Told mostly through vignettes of families representative of typical child welfare families, the authors deftly illustrated the complexities of "the system," fairly documenting the strengths and failures. Considering that child welfare is what I've been doing for 5 1/2 years, I wasn't bored with the book or angered at any misrepresentations. Rather, I was pleased to see how well-researched and unbiased the piece was. Further, it reminds me that the complexities are what have kept me in the field so far.The book is a bit dated -- methamphetamines have overtaken crack cocaine as a drug of choice for most child welfare families, and timelines for reunfiication have shrunk. Further, Monterey County (where I work), at least, has greatly improved how it does sexual abuse forensic interviews. I got a bit bogged down in the delinquency section when it became less vignette-based and more pedanctic, finding that the vignettes were better conveyors of information. Overall, though, this was an outstanding book and one which I will give to my boyfriend and parents to read. Anyone interested in child welfare should read this book for an understanding of a system that will never and cannot be black or white.
