I saw this one , and decided it was worth $5 to find out what new thing Mr. Schreiter was up to.This book will teach you exactly what to say to anyone when you are in any kind of business. If you sell anything, you'll want to know what to say to people that may lead to a sale.If you go to networking events, or any social gatherings, chances are that someone there would like to know that you have what they need. Here is a painless, rejection free way to have people ask you about your business.I know several business people who use no other method, than the one taught in this book, to get highly profitable clients with big ticket sales. This book isn't just for MLM.I wish this book was also in paperback, I'd rather have that.

I cried so many times reading this book that I forced myself to stop and not pick it up again the next day multiple times. I am not one to write reviews, but for those of us who were lucky enough to have never seen war, know conceptually that it's a terrible thing, and somehow idealize the heroism of it, this book will set you straight.I didn't know anything about this book until it was recommended in The Economist. I was curious because I read a lot of books on history and wars, and was baited by the idea of stories from women on the front lines - not at the factories working. It was purely out of intellectual interest - come to think of it, all the books I read on the topic were written by men....Once I started reading, I could not stop. Between tears and tissues, I kept reading. I read until I was sobbing so hard I couldn't see through my tears. The feelings of fear, pain, courage, grief, hope...of girls half my age...it was heart-wrenching. At their age I was having first world teenager problems of pimples and wanting to be popular. I could not be more embarrassed.These stories cannot be made up - not something this raw, this brutal, this...human.I write this review in the hopes to encourage more people to read it. There's no need to convince people that war is bad. This book will show you - straight to your heart.

There aren't enough stars for this book, the best war chronicle ever written.Theirs was the first generation lifted from serfdom, they became doctors, nurses, pilots, snipers, drivers, tank commanders, partisans and regular infantry. They were wounded, tortured, raped and killed. After indescribable horrors they returned to their villages and were often rejected as trench whores. The book is not nihilistic but very sobering: A species that produces such people has a fighting chance. It is essential for anyone wishing to understand Russia, Communism, or German fascism.One fragment: "As soon as I begin telling this story, I get sick again. I’m talking, my insides turn to jelly, everything is shaking. I see it all again, I picture it: how the dead lie—their mouths are open, they were shouting something and never finished shouting, their guts are ripped out. …And how frightening! How frightening is hand-to-hand combat, where men go at each other with bayonets…Bare bayonets. You start stammering, for several days you can’t get the words out correctly. You lose speech. Can those who weren’t there understand this? How do you tell about it? With what face? Well, answer me—with what face should I remember this? Others can somehow…They’re able to…But me—no. I weep. A truly great book. To say it is moving is a huge understatement. These women suffered as teenagers what most people can not even imagine. The war was a holocaust beyond imagination. They saw things happen that are burned into their memories. Each woman's statement complements and expounds on the others. It is not an easy read. But it gives you a unique perspective on war and why it must be prevented in all cases. These horrors do not justify the world that resulted as a result. So many lives were shattered and the political ramifications were not a solution either. Their stories should be recorded for history and taught to our children in every country. Alexievich deserves the Nobel Prize more than any other writer. It must be hell to catalogue these stories, and this was only her first book, which is expanded with material that was censored when the book was first released in the 1980's. She has gone on the write similar books on Chernobyl, the Afghan war, and the collapse of the Soviet Union. But this is her gem. You can not read it straight through. You have to read it in segments and then take some time to reflect on it. Utterly devastating!

I thought this was an outstanding albeit impressionistic contribution to Western understanding of the Soviet war effort in the Second World War. I'd consider this a must-read for anybody who wants to get a sense of the insanity of the Second World War and its human cost. It's all here: the patriotism and unbelievable courage of the average subject of the Soviet Union; the insane stupidity of Stalin and his regime's destruction of the Soviet army immediately before the war began; the brutality of the war itself and the errors of Soviet leadership that worsened it (sending unarmed Russians into battle against German Panzer divisions, Russian troops without boots in winter, starvation rations, etc.); the needless brutality of Nazi soldiers, the futility and stupidity of war in general. All of this told in a rather impressionistic style gleaned from interviews with female veterans, who tell their tragic tale sparingly and eloquently. The final lines of the book underscore the beauty of the author's narrative: "for a long time after the war I was afraid of the sky, oven of raising my head towards the sky. I was afraid of seeing plowed-up earth. But the rooks already walked calmly over it. The birds quickly forgot the war.."

Each of the books of the forgotten colony books so far has had a dark tone to them. In this book, the author takes it to the next level in becoming darker.If you like a character, be prepared to say good-bye. If the character had a little bit of a moral spine, say good-bye. The author has no problem killing off characters left or right. I believe that he is trying to make sure that the reader understands the frailty of human life. One would have to come to the conclusion that the author seems to enjoy the scenes of killing off characters people want to see survive since he seems to believe that anyone that could half-way be considered decent or moral would die during the apocalypse. The only characters the author seems to want to keep are despicable characters who will not even die when a lesser injury kills someone else.By the time you reach the end: one of the original characters is badly injured, one is no longer in control of their own body, and one you would like to see die is still coming out on top.Another reason for the low score for this book is that the re-introduction of the heroine(?)(I think this is the author's hero since she overcomes all obstacles even death) is very formulaic. Sargeant Card has to fight someone who is trying to get entry? Hmmm, who could that be? Oh, it's just the author's heroine coming back into the story to make sure that everyone else dies.Supposedly there is one last book in the series and I will wait until that one is out and read before I pick up any of this author's other books.

I have enjoyed this series even more than the Forgotten Earth set - but I’m glad to have read the Earth set before I read this one as it gives excellent context. The storyline is even more exciting and more alien (which I like).Now I’m frustrated that I have to wait for the last book in this series - please hurry it up!And keep writing

This book. #4 in this series is darker and. Ends with an ugly cliffhanger. Riley strikes again. Too bad she won't stay dead when something does manage to kill her. I will look for the next book when it comes out. Strong book characters become almost real sometime.

Overall I have been enjoying this series, but you lost me at the end of this book. Why would The Advocate attach itself to Caleb vs. Valentine? She has much more valuable information that is needed immediately than Caleb has. Why wait unless you just wanted to keep the Valentine/Caleb feud going? Will hang on for the answer, but not sure you can pull that one out of your hat.

This series was great until this book !!! Unless Caleb was having a dream sequence and everything changes it's just WAY to dark. I don't want to give anything away so I'll leave it at that. Not sure if I'm even going to read book 5

This is a great continuation of the story many twists and turns and a nice big old Cliffhanger the big problem is called the damn can't wait for the next book find out what happened

Read this in two sittings. This was a bit of a downer at the end. Which gives me hope the next book will be victorious. Lots of excitement and great characters.

I’e read all Forbes books loved this series and read the all in a week. Can’t wait for the finale, but also hate to see it end, great story as are all his books!

My review here is a drop in the bucket compared with the great number of them all. Also, book reviews at Amazon are often hits and misses and often do not contain what I want to know. I prefer not to discuss the synopsis. There are tons of synopses all over the web and so you can find those anywhere. Again, I simply don't feel they belong in a book review. I want to know other things.If you've not read anything by Raymond Chandler, then the first thing that you'll notice is his descriptive writing. I love it! Take a simple phone booth call, "I dropped my nickel and dialed his number just for fun." There are too many great lines to count, but another of my favorites is, "A few tentative raindrops splashed down on the sidewalk and made spots as large as nickels." I can almost hear Humphrey Bogart reading the book to me.The film is best known for its confusion, but the book irons those issues straight out. What is really interesting to me is how the then-modern world saw itself. They refer to old fashioned values as Victorian. Homosexuality was out there in a kind of don't ask don't tell way, much like the 80s, actually. However, they were not afraid to notice it. In fact, one man goes both ways in the book! Casual sex did exist, despite what the Hollywood Hays Code wanted everyone to believe. However, I see a lot of misinformed folks making statements about this. City life was different than small-town life. A small town in California is incredibly different than a small town in other parts of the country. Morals are only what a community makes them to be. They shouldn't be forced on anyone and this book actually kind of leads you to that kind of understanding. Morals are personal, not law. Too many confuse that these days.The steady paced reader could finish this book in less than 7 hours, without any breaks. However, I didn't read it at a steady pace, unless you call crawling along a steady pace and in a way that's really what it was. I liked to savor his words. Raymond Chandler is a descriptive genius. Now there comes a problem too. When there is too much of it, it kind of sounds overdone. There were only a couple of times though that I saw this problem. I have to admit that his craft was interesting because he normally balanced it with interesting dialog with a lot of sarcasm. "... you have to hold your teeth clamped around Hollywood to keep from chewing on stray blondes."The slanguage is fascinating. If you've never read anything like this before, you're sure to learn a whole bunch of new slang. For example, a police badge is called a "buzzer" and I think "buttons" was police, which is probably referring to their uniforms if I even had that right but you get the idea.The story is actually two of them. There is a link between them but this easily could have been broken up into two novellas. If I had to make a complaint, it would be the very ending. I think more explanation of someone's intention is necessary but I think that's only an error of time and science. In that day, health and the psyche were still in the early stages and many things they believed then are not necessarily how it worked. I know that sounds cryptic but it's the best way I can describe it without spoiling a single thing.All in all, it's simply a fantastic book! I think even those who don't like mysteries would enjoy it because of its prose alone. If you're easily offended though, stay away. This is not a book for those kinds of pansy people, which I think Chandler would call them today. This is about what people were like and the morals that they had. It is to be enjoyed, not scorned.

Let me start by saying this particular version, I notice, is not available. That is good because this is the worst kindle conversion I have seen yet In the entire book when a word has the letters "cl" a "d" is used, therefore close becomes dose and clear becomes dear in the ENTIRE book. Periods appear in the middle of a sentence, sometimes in the middle of a word. Numbers sometimes appear in place of letters. The last ten chapters have a misspelled word on nearly every page.Now, about the story. This is the best Phillip Marlowe I have read to date. I scored the story a 5 star, not the typing, as that is not the author's fault. In this book Marlowe is involved in a short case that comes to a quick close and then starts another case. You just know the two have to be connected, or they wouldn't both be in the book, but you can't figure out how, but they do. And the end of the book has an unexpected twist. You seem to suspect this twist, but the closer you get to the end it seems unlikely, but it still ambushes you, I highly recommend.

I first read this book - - as a paperback - - back in my teens, and it stuck with me ever since. I eventually became an author myself, and during the course of writing my third novel I referenced "The Long Goodbye" by way of the Gin and Rose's Lime Juice cocktail known as a Gimlet which is an integral part of Chandler's tale. Having downloaded the first few sample chapters, just to double-check my source material, I found myself once again hooked by Raymond Chandler's prose, at which point I decided to read the whole book again. I wasn't disappointed. If you've never read a Raymond Chandler novel featuring private eye Phillip Marlowe, do yourself a favor and download this fine book. It's complex story full of wry humor, snappy dialogue, hard-boiled tough guys and a healthy dose of twists and turns. I won't spoil the fun by giving away any of the plot details, but I will leave you with Phillip Marlowe's unique description of what is arguably the most popular morning beverage in the world: "I went to the kitchen to make coffee - - yards of coffee. Rich, strong, bitter, boiling hot, ruthless, depraved. The lifeblood of tired men."

Why does Marlow find General Sternwoods' younger daughter nude and drugged at Lavern Terrace? Why does she turn up nude in his bed later on? as a person who in his heart of hearts hopes to one day be a Byzantine Catholic monk, i found this book to be both rich in information, and inspiring.pelikan has long been my favorite historian of Christian theology. one of the great things about his work is his familiarity with the original texts: he is absolutely saturated in the writings of the fathers, and he can weave citations from their various works into his study in a manner similar to the way the old school fathers weave Scripture into their arguments.i never new what the cappadocians were as far as natural theologians. before i read this book, they were my heroes as Christians; now they are my heroes as intellectuals as well. he compares the effect that the cappadocians had on the east with the effect that augustine had on the west; as a Catholic, i'm half jealous :-)to me, the cappadocians serve as a model for just how good Christian theology can get. their writings are saturated in beauty; their theology is absolutely Trinitarian. they met their world head on and analyzed it in light of what Christianity could give. they combined an uncommon ability to both stand for the Orthodox and Catholic faith and to be vibrant and bold in their theology.a bonus is pelikan's portraying macrina, the sister of basil and gregory of nyssa, as 'the fourth cappadocian' and a source of much that was great in her brothers.i highly recommend this book. often, Christianity is accused of being 'paganized' from its encounter with hellenism. pelikan's study shows perhaps quite a different picutre: the Christianization of hellenism. at any rate, this wonderful book shows Christian theology at its best. i highly recommend it.

I know that Jaroslav Pelikan gives intellectual peak experiences to some people, but the fact is that he bores me terribly. There is no doubt in my mind that the man is a first-rate erudite who has read thousands of books, but he is a very bad writer, with no style at all. His prose is impeccable but the way he tells you things is dry, dry, dry. Never a note of playfulness, never an interesting anecdote. It's simply unbearable, or only bearable for monks who want to do penance.Although I was deeply interested in the subject and am accustomed to reading big books (I have read Robert Eisenman's huge volume on James, the Brother of Jesus), I couldn't go beyond the third chapter...Note that the scope of this book is very limited: pagan natural theology and Christian Cappadocian natural theology. This is NOT a book on the encounter of Paganism and Christianity in general. This renders the whole discussion terribly technical, and for me, terribly boring.Conclusion: for very patient specialists only.

I'm an intermediate level programmer with no formal computer science education. When I started this book I had about 5 months on-the-job experience with Python, and a couple months with C#. This book gave me the foundation I needed to take full advantage of what C# has to offer. Every chapter is very clearly written, and teaches step by step, just like the title says.I like to learn by doing, so I was glad that examples with sample data are included for every concept. First you learn the theory, then you try it out. For those days where I understand the gist of a topic and don't have time to do the examples, I can look at the finished code samples instead.The writing is very clear, and the editing is clean. The author is concise, specific, and never wasteful. This book has been a tremendous help at my job, and the skills I've learned have allowed me to take on many new responsibilities.That said, This probably isn't the best book for a first-time programmer. C# is not as intuitive as a language as Python or Ruby. However, if you have a little programming experience, and you really want to learn, this book is the first stop I'd recommend.

As a non-programmer trying to learn to be a programmer, I've read a lot of books on programming, most of which are quite lacking. My biggest gripe about programming books is that they might teach you certain concepts, but not necessarily how to use them or why they are important. This book does a good job of doing that. There is lots of handholding.Throughout the book, on pretty much every topic, you'll find things like "So you've learned about this, now we're going to work through an example of how you use it. And I'm going to point out why you do it this way and not that way. And things to be careful about." The "Notes" in each section are almost worth the price of the book.If you're an experienced programmer, you probably don't want the handholding, but for the inexperienced, or even somewhat experienced, the repetition is a much needed component of the learning process.I highly recommend this book and wish all other programming books were similarly written.

This is single handedly the best programming book I have ever read. I have used multiple books in the past for VB.Net, VBA, PHP, HTML, CSS, and Javascript; none of them have matched this quality. This book is easy to understand, offers excellent reasoning for C# code choices, and so far is error free. I am casually going through this and have not found a single mistake through Chapter 5. Great book, Highly recommend.

I concur with other reviewers on the material in the book. It covered both Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 programming through Chapter 22, but the multi-tasking is only good for Windows 8.1, and I have Windows 7. I don't know if the multi-tasking will work in Windows 10. Anyway, I am disappointed I can't do actual multi-tasking with my environment.Almost all of his programming exercise work as written. I found two with working complete solutions, but they didn't work when I typed the code in. It wasn't my code, because I copied and pasted his code over mine, and still had the same error. I suspect they didn't include an updated library in the exercise folder.

I used this book as the companion text for an intermediate C# EdX course. Though I have used C# for many years, I didn't always have time in my job to immerse myself in the latest features of C# and the .NET framework, such as LINQ, Entity Framework, async and tasks. John Sharp has written a number of books and his careful build-up of concepts throughout the chapters shows not only his knowledge of the subject matter but also his experience as a teacher.

I purchased this book and C# in a nutshell. I read the first chapter of both, and this book explained things much better with more examples. Having only minor experience in Visual Basic, C++, and HTML, the explanations are extremely helpful. The free examples online (provided by the book) are also very nice. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in programming (Windows store or desktop; it explains for both and works with Windows 7).Quick heads up, this book is around 800 pages, so it isn't exactly light reading; it is comprehensive.

"Step by Step" is exactly the phrase to describe this approach -- a welcome incremental, not overly simplistic, clear and informative trainer for anyone new to C# or .NET while not totally new to programming; as the book introduction explicitly cites "developers...not completely new to programming". Working through the example code is almost necessary for someone like me, in order to get the full picture of some of the concepts in context, esp. if moving from a procedural coding paradigm to this objective oriented approach. A great knowledge builder for the syntax of the language.

This is a really good C# book. I'm coming from a Java background but my company is beginning the migration of our current apps to C# so I need to get up to speed. This book is definitely helping me to do this. The code samples are spot on in terms of working as expected. John includes many helpful notes that help to explain or clarify important concepts. You can't go wrong with this book...

Purchased for myself. These puzzles are EXTREMELY DIFFICULT!!!! I thought I was pretty good at "number fill-ins" until I got this one. Be careful...they are very hard to solve.
