The route details themselves on the maps are great, pointing out places of interest for sightseeing, food, lodging, entertainment, etc... but the quality of the book is horrendous at best. The entire left edge of almost every one of these maps is cut off, leaving half words to label points of interest. "ir Beach Overlook", "y Model Visitors Center", "shi Ran", "lden Gate Bridge" ... just to name a few from one of the pages. Who in their right mind could print and sell any book in this type of condition? It would also be nice to have pictures/photographs of this route along one of the most beautiful coastlines in the world. Not a single picture in this entire book.

I was really disappointed with this book--the information was far more general than I was expecting. I already had a LOT more information just from reading things on Pinterest. The cover is very nice quality--too bad what's in it isn't helpful enough for me to keep it.

I’d give half a star or less if possible. The book has been cut wrong and all the Left hand pages are cut off. Not one or two pages, but EVERY LEFT HAND PAGE.

Very good! Just what I needed!!

Great outline for us to plan our Pacific Northwest driving trip.

Fantastic guide to a variety of must see locations. Very easy to follow. Wonderful maps!

My kids and I were recently diagnosed with gluten, eggs, nut and dairy allergies. It's a bit daunting telling your children that they can no longer eat all the things they love and their friends eat regularly - peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, pizza, cupcakes and so forth. This book has been a tremendous help to us in adjusting. I have made several of the recipes and they have all come out very well, good enough that my kids do not feel deprived. A promise that I will make some dark chocolate bread is usually enough to assuage any feelings of deprivation! Also, the recipes include "normal" ingredients - Cara will not send you on a hunt for expensive, difficult-to-find ingredients, like some cookbook authors do! My kids' birthdays are coming up and I plan on using the recipes from this books to make sweet treats for them and their friends - I love the fact that I trust that the recipes will turn out great and do not need to try them out first. Finally, there is a great section at the end of the book, where Cara includes a table of substitutions, which is so helpful since we also cannot tolerate flax. Clearly, she cares first and foremost about your efforts succeeding, less about whether you follow her recipes exactly as written. Thank you for your hard working in putting this resource together!

One of the best gluten-free cookbooks I have ever used! I have nearly 100 cookbooks and have been vegan baking for over a decade, and already this is near the top 10 of my favorite cookbooks. Every recipe I have made has been so good - they rival any non-vegan, non-GF recipe and stand as our favorites overall! The pumpkin bread is the best I've ever had and the chocolate cupcakes are puffy and delicious. The brown sugar doughnuts are wonderful - taste just like a doughnut should. However, we did find on that particular recipe that it makes 24 mini doughnuts, not 12! I tried to fit the batter into 12 doughnut molds (ended up making 18, even) and when they baked, they were way too big and puffy! Oh well - still yummy!! I will keep using this for years to come, I am sure.

I am so happy to have found this gem of a cookbook! I have one daughter with celiac and one daughter with gluten and dairy intolerances. I needed something like this for Thanksgiving as there were thirteen people coming over, everyone with different food issues. The problem with the gluten free products and flours on the market is that they all contain tapioca and my dayghter will be sick for days if she has tapioca in her food. This book has a wonderful section on creating your own flour blends where you can mix and match flours to get that fluffy texture and taste without the tapioca. It is worth its cost just for the section on teaching you substitutions and makes it unique compared to all the other cookbooks I own. With that being said, I made the cornbread from here and most people at Thanksgiving dinner are big gluten and dairy eaters. Yet, the recipe from here was such a hit that everyone wanted me to share the recipe with them. It did fall apart alot more than if you had a recipe with wheat but it was super tasty and moist. And I also used bluecornmeal instead of regular cornmeal (which might have impacted results) but was still amazing.

This cookbook has been a lifesaver for my son who cannot eat gluten, eggs or dairy. Thank You Cara Reed! I have made the Yellow Cake from her website 3 times, and it has been great every time. We made the Banana Buckwheat Muffins for Christmas morning - YUM, they came out perfect. I used almond milk for the non-dairy milk. I made the Trefoil Cookies, which I actually used for cutouts at Christmas, and today I made the Grandma's Chocolate Chip cookies. I used the exact recipe from the book with 2 sticks of vegan butter (a brand called Melt). They are great! Thin and crispy, so not exactly like the picture, but delicious. The pictures are amazing, I love to just browse through and dream. Although I will likely stick to the simple recipes.

I was recently diagnosed with a list of over 15 food allergies, including diary, gluten, and eggs. I had purchased this cookbook before I found this out, when I was going through an experimental vegan phase. I dug it out and was so thrilled to read the recipes. My youngest son and I tried several and fell in love. Thank you, thank you!

Great book for our family. We are nut, egg, milk, and wheat allergic and eat vegan. Her deserts are by far the best we have had in our cookbooks (and we have a lot of books).

I am a pretty good Vegan, gluten free baker and I have tried numerous recipes in this book with terrible results. Don't waste your money or time! The book is going to goodwill.

My FAVORITE gluten free vegan baking book. The recipes are not complicated and they always turn out great! I especially love the author's spins on old favorites like "pop tarts," "pecan sandies," and "fig newtons." You will not be disappointed with this book.

The Puzzle Instinct: The Meaning of Puzzles in Human Life, by Marcel Danesi

Review

"Danesi, a professor of semiotics and anthropology (Univ. of Toronto), explores why puzzles, having arisen in earliest human history at the same time as mystery cults, are an intrinsic part of human life. Will Shortz, crossword puzzle editor of the New York Times, has suggested enigmatology as the study of the relationship between puzzles and culture. This book, which explores the puzzle genres that have survived over the years, is a contribution to that rubric. After first asking the question Why puzzles? (and developing several possible answers, among which is that they provide comic relief from unanswerable larger questions), Danesi devotes chapters to each of several types of puzzle. These include language puzzles (e.g., riddles and anagrams); pictures (e.g., optical illusions and mazes); logic (e.g., deductions and paradoxes); numbers (e.g., mathematical recreations); and games (e.g., chess). A final chapter synopsizes the discussion. A detailed list of references is included, as are solutions to the specific puzzles posed. The book is well written, has no mathematical prerequisites, and is quite suitable for a general audience as well as lower- and upper-division undergraduates." —D. Robbins, Trinity College (CT), Choice, December 2002 (D. Robbins, Trinity College (CT) Choice 2002-01-00)

#2,773,276 in Books (See Top 100 in Books)

Twenty-five years ago, there was a boom in sales of a fist-sized ingenious contraption of plastic, a fractured cube of multi-colored sides, the pieces of which could be twisted so that all the six faces had different colors (easy) or back to the one configuration where each face had only its own color (hard). The ubiquitous Rubik's Cube came and went (well, it is a puzzle classic in its simplicity; you can still buy it, but the fad is gone), but there will be some other puzzle fad not long from now. The urge to figure out puzzles seems to be as ingrained in human personality as the urge to make language or art. In _The Puzzle Instinct: The Meaning of Puzzles in Human Life_ (Indiana University Press), Marcel Danesi, a professor of semiotics and anthropology, tries to figure out the meta-puzzle: life has lots of mysteries and complications. Why should we want to manufacture more?Danesi's book turns out to be a spirited review of puzzle history, and the history is a long one. The _Ahmes Papyrus_, nearly four thousand years old, is one of the earliest surviving documents of civilization anywhere, and is essentially a series of mathematical puzzles. It is significant that its title is _Directions for Attaining Knowledge of All Dark Things_. Charlemagne, the founder of the Holy Roman Empire, had a puzzle-maker on staff, and King Louis XIII of France had a Royal Anagrammatist. A description of Rubik's Cube is included, of course, as well as many other puzzle fads. The popularity of crossword puzzles is undimmed since they were introduced in the _New York World_ in 1913; the original one is reproduced here. Crosswords became an overnight sensation, and many people still have to do their crossword puzzle every day. Anyone familiar with puzzle literature will find much familiar here; classics like the Towers of Hanoi, magic squares (the best one is by Benjamin Franklin), the River-Crossing Puzzle, and various optical illusions are all included. The puzzle that gives us the exhortation "Think outside the box" is here, as is the four-color map theorem, Archimedes's Cattle Problem, cryptograms, and tangrams. No one reading this book could deny that making and solving puzzles is a universal human trait. But why? Danesi finally comes to no certain conclusion, but there are some good reasons that he presents. One is that all of us enjoy the "Aha!" experience, the inexplicable flash of insight that can present an answer to something the likes of which we have never before encountered. Puzzles are escapism, but of a peculiar form invoking anxiety and curiosity after the puzzle is presented and pleasurably relieved only by finding the solution (or looking in the answer section). The most satisfactory answer is that like pure science, solving puzzles has been good for us. It is certainly true that working on puzzles is pleasurable, and can be instructive for the individuals trying to figure them out. In a larger sense (and this is a theme presented repeatedly here), puzzles have sparked mathematical revolutions. When Euler set out to solve the Königsberg bridge problem (citizens had known they could not walk around the river town crossing each bridge once and only once), he invented networks, and this eventually became topology. The paradoxes of Zeno (such as the runner being unable to reach the end of a race because he first has to go halfway, and then half of the remaining course, and then half of that, ad infinitum) were a spur for developing the concepts of limits and calculus. When Bertrand Russell tried logically to resolve his barber paradox (If a village barber shaves all and only those villagers who do not shave themselves, does he shave himself?), the resolutions themselves had paradoxes, and only Gödel's famous Incompleteness Theorem showed that full resolutions would be forever impossible. Puzzles are good for us, and this collection provides plenty to think about.

This is an overview of the origins of the puzzle in human history, as well as a more detailed look at the various types in existence, complete with some examples. It also mentions some of the famous puzzle makers of history, and the influence of puzzles on mathematics and science and vice versa.

Review

A Best Book of the Year:  NPR and Boston GlobePraise for Dear Committee Members:"After years of teaching, I write a lot of recommendation letters, and Schumacher's parodies sound alarmingly close to the real thing." —Claire Messud, The Guardian “A hilarious academic novel that'll send you laughing (albeit ruefully) back into the trenches of the classroom. . . . [A] mordant minor masterpiece. . . . Like the best works of farce, academic or otherwise, Dear Committee Members deftly mixes comedy with social criticism and righteous outrage. By the end, you may well find yourself laughing so hard it hurts.” —Maureen Corrigan, NPR“If you like academic satires, you’ll love this novel, which is written as a series of recommendation letters by a cranky, long-suffering English professor. Like Richard Russo’s Straight Man this book has a lot to say about the humanities in American colleges and universities. It’s very funny and also moving.” —Tom Perrotta "In My Library", New York Post“For that reason, I entreat you, now that you’ve reviewed my précis, to read Ms. Schumacher’s book. It is easily consumed in small pieces, like a tray of sweets and savories. It is ideal for passing the time between innings of a baseball game, waiting for a long red light to change, or sitting in a warm bath. As for Jason Fitger, I implore you to take a leap of faith and offer him admission to your next available residency. The worlds of business and academia will be poorer for lack of his letters, but perhaps, with your support, he can find a way to channel his energy and inventiveness into a new novel—one that will hopefully be as entertaining and as sharply written as Julie Schumacher’s Dear Committee Members.” —Jon Michaud, The New Yorker“A smart-as-hell, fun-as-heck novel composed entirely of recommendation letters. . . . Beyond the moribund state of academia, Schumacher touches on more universal themes about growing old and facing failure: not necessarily the dramatic failure of a batter striking out with two on and two out in the  bottom of the ninth, but the quieter failure that accrues over time, until we are finally forced to admit that we are not who we wanted to become.” —Alexander Nazaryan, Newsweek“The book is hilarious. . . . [Schumacher's] scabrous book reminds me of Sam Lipsyte's Home Land, Richard Russo's Straight Man and Jincy Willett's Winner of the National Book Award. If you didn't find those books funny, well, that means you're a corpse. But you're also, apparently, a corpse who reads, so there's hope for you yet. You should read Dear Committee Members; maybe it will bring you back to life.” —Brock Clarke, The New York Times Book Review“Bitterly hilarious. If you are looking for a witty, original cri de coeur over the oft-lamented decline of the humanities, I urgently recommend this novel.” —Sam Sacks, The Wall Street Journal“Julie Schumacher’s Dear Committee Members is the best sort of novel: the laugh-out-loud page-turner that also bleeds and breathes, the satire you want to quote to friends, the book that lets you in on the joke so you can better see the truth of the world.” —The Rumpus“A funny and lacerating novel of academia written in the form of letters of recommendation. . .  .Dear Committee Members isn’t really an academic novel, or even an academic satire. It’s a sincere exploration of the depths and breadths of human selfishness, and the contemporary American academy is simply the backdrop. . . . So in the end, it is exactly Fitger’s selfishness that destructs, rather than his life—and although his semi-redemption may not redeem the rank carcass of academic culture that continues to fester around him, it’s more than enough to recommend this mischievous novel.” —Slate“[A] richly sardonic epistolary volume.” —San Francisco Chronicle “The beauty of Dear Committee Members is that Fitger is not just an eloquent professor with a poison pen. He’s previously alienated quite a few of the people whose favor he attempts to curry here, his ex-wife and ex-girlfriend included, and he has a habit of compounding the insults anew with each communication. But for all his corrosiveness, he’s actually one of the good guys: a generous defender of gifted students, underappreciated colleagues, and fine scholarship. He’s a romantic, really, a champion of academia. And he does love being a writer, 'which, despite its horrors, is possibly one of the few sorts of lives worth living at all.'”  —The Boston Globe “Each letter Fitger writes is imbued with the wisdom and comic chops that make Schumacher a wonderfully entertaining writer. Let this review serve as an LOR for Dear Committee Members. If there’s one thing new grads need in addition to the congratulatory check or gift card, it’s a few good laughs before reality sets in.” —Minneapolis Star Tribune“If Fitger wrote only sarcastic letters, that would be one thing, but in this short tome a man appears between the zingers... Be sure to tag this book with 'for fans of David Foster Wallace.'” —Milwaukee Journal Sentinel“Lest you conclude I am merely impressed by a humorous, well-handled gimmick, let me assure you that Ms. Schumacher brilliantly lays bare the tale of Fitger’s stalled career, failed love life, and quixotic championing of a student and his unfinished novel. “Dear Committee Members” ends with a blend of sadness and quiet hope that I did not anticipate, but found wholly satisfying.  In short, I recommend Dear Committee Members without hesitation or caveat.” —The Iowa Gazette“A hilarious and surprisingly poignant pleasure to read.” —Houston Chronicle“Schumacher’s satire of the petty rivalries, byzantine hierarchies and committee meetings is spot on—scathing and laugh-out-loud funny.”  —The Wichita Eagle“As back-to-school entertainment, Dear Committee Members hits the spot." —Santa Fe New Mexican“[A] very funny epistolary novel composed of recommendation letters. . . . It’s an unusual form for comedy, but it works. Truth is stranger than fiction in this acid satire of the academic doldrums.” —Kirkus Reviews“Schumacher’s warm satire of the peculiarities of the Ivory Tower will be recognizable to anyone who has encountered the bureaucracy and internal politics of higher education.” —Booklist“A creative writing professor herself, Schumacher crafts a suitably verbose but sympathetic voice for Fitger, a man who exudes both humor and heart.” —Publishers Weekly“The letters have many funny touches, which carry the novel. The best touches, though, have to do with students. More than a third of the letters recommend students for jobs, and one chord that runs throughout is that they face dubious prospects. . . . It's not a good time to be an English major, and Fitger's concern for his students redeems his otherwise questionably epistolary etiquette.” —Chronicle of Higher Education “Schumacher revitalizes an under—or maybe just unappreciated art form. . . . [Her] tone is warm and her insight into academia incisive.” —Bookish.com“A clever epistolary send-up of academic logrolling.” —Shelf Awareness“Let’s not look at this as an epistolary novel about the academic world, but as a laying out of the Tarot cards of our society’s past and future. It’s that indicative. That important. In the end, the future looks not quite so grim, but my reading is that like so many novels that investigate independence and fierce belief (with Melville in the lead), we have to read between the lines, infer, assume, and hope that the American virtues of compassion, empathy, and even wild projection will continue. This is a funny, very sad, disarming novel. My pitch to Hollywood would be: David Markson’s Wittgenstein’s Mistress meets Padgett Powell’s The Interrogative Mood but—and here I’m just another expendable would-be savior, like Ms. Schumacher’s character Jay Fitger—nobody would know what I was talking about. My hat’s off to the author of this flawlessly written, highwire act of a book. Hollywood be damned.” —Ann Beattie, author of Chilly Scenes of Winter and The New Yorker Stories“Dear Committee Members is a brilliant book that, in my head, sits comfortably on my prized shelf of academic novels, right between Lucky Jim and Pictures from an Institution. But it’s funnier than either, and more wrenching in the end. The conceit of a novel told in letters of reference is inspired, and it is killingly funny because it’s all so killingly true. Truth walks here in the strangest of costumes, and in part because of its guises, we can face it, frown, laugh, cry. I’ve never lost an afternoon so happily.” —Jay Parini, author of The Last Station and The Passages of H.M. “Julie Schumacher has perfectly rendered a portrait of the artist not as a young man but as the beleaguered tenured has-been surly lovable anachronistic man he's become. At once satire and tribute, the book alludes to a time in America's past both in literature and academia, and the passage of that heady heyday is hilariously—and bittersweetly—displayed in this genius borrowed form. Never have letters of recommendation made me happier to encounter them.”  —Antonya Nelson, author of Funny Once: Stories and Bound

This book is a funny and delightful epistolary novel, comprising predominately letters of recommendation from an English professor. If you have ever worked in academia, studied in a university setting, or asked for a letter of recommendation, then this novel will resonate with you. Those in academia will especially appreciate the layers of humor.Jason Fitger is a professor of Literature and Creative Writing at Payne University, a small struggling college in the Midwest. Nothing in his life is going right. He had early success with a novel written while he was in a graduate seminar. Unfortunately, the novel was based on his life and love life as a graduate student. Subsequent novels, also autobiographical of his love life, did not do as well. His ex-wife teaches at the same university and the woman he had an affair with is also employed there. Another ex heads up a writer’s retreat. He is trying to champion the novel of one of his graduate students, but the student’s funding has been cut and he is floundering. The chair of the English Department is a sociologist. Worse yet, the Economics Department, is having a complete renovation. They reside in the same building as the English Department. The Econ profs are evacuated while the English profs are left to deal with the toxic air and construction noise. In the midst of all this, Professor Fitger writes various letters of recommendation for past and present students, letters of complaint to the university, and letters of pining and regret to his ex-lovers.This book is laugh out loud and snort out loud funny. It will really resonate with university professors. Professor Fitger is cutting and sarcastic, but totally nails university life and the inherent politics. For all his bluster and snark, Professor Fitger remains a dedicated and thoughtful teacher. This book is well-written. It is smart and funny. It is also short and can be read in one day. I will be recommending this to my friends who teach at the university level.

I became aware of this book from a review in "The Chronicle of Higher Education," which recommended it, but with the warnings that (a) the main character is a cliché, drawn from countless academic novels, of the cranky male dinosaur prof with women troubles; and (b) the novel's satire is unsupported by a meaningful vision for academe, its jokes cheapened by not being at the service of a deeper purpose.Neither of these criticisms fit my experience of this book, which chronicles a year in the life of English professor Jason Fitger through his correspondence, mostly letters of recommendations (LORs, as he refers to them). Indeed our hero is a type, recognizable both from literature and from life, of the cantankerous, retrograde English prof who clings to his oldfangled ways even as they plunge him into certain obsolescence. But those of us who have struggled with the online forms on which LORs must currently be submitted will find a freshness to the predicaments described here: e.g., to the way that Fitger's answers to the cookie-cutter questions are cut off by the forms, to his refusal to check the boxes that require him to rank students by percentages, and ultimately to his insistence on sending them via "the picturesque blue mailbox on the corner, opening its creaking rectangular metal mouth, and dropping the envelope within." This kind of comedy, which Schumacher handles with aplomb, simply would not work with a different, updated protagonist. Also, despite his superannuated ways, Fitger, as it turns out, has not only a soul but a surprisingly sturdy ability to work the system, which together amount to a vision that easily sustains the satire in this novel (even if it does at times border on the sentimental). Threaded throughout the book are his indefatigable efforts to support a talented but tormented student (Darren Browles), his vain hopes of reuniting with his estranged wife (who learns of his infidelity through an unfortunate "reply all" mishap), and his growing, grudging respect for the sociologist "appointed by the university warlords to rule our asylum [the English Dept.] until the inmates exhibit greater pliability and calm." These threads are tied together in a denouement that, while hardly wildly dramatic, exhibits that Fitger is true to his principles, ready to make sacrifices, and will persevere in the face of whatever hardship life throws his way.As an erstwhile member myself of an English Dept., I also found highly satisfying and quite hilarious the many jabs this book takes at the lavish treatment received by the Economics Dept., which resides in the same building as English just upstairs and is undergoing renovation throughout the year of this epistolary narrative. That renovation accelerates the indignities forced upon the literature faculty by poisoning them with venomous fumes, demolishing the fax machine when a portion of the ceiling collapses almost decapitating the English Department's student assistant, and leaching slick and noxious liquids onto the floor of the men's room which abuts Fitger's office. "But never mind: I'm sure our foreshortened life spans will be made worthwhile on the day when the economists in their jewel-encrusted palanquins, are reinstalled in their palazzo over our heads."These are indeed hard times for the humanities. While this novel lacks the heft to qualify as any kind of masterpiece, even a comic one, and while it will probably (hopefully!) feel dated in a relatively short time, it feels really good to be able laugh along with Julie Schumacher and Jason Fitger at the absurdity of the moment in which we find ourselves now.

I bought this after hearing an interview with the author on NPR. I was so impressed with the interview that I decided to read one of her books. I was a bit disappointed; I have never liked epistolary novels (I did like the Sorrows of Young Werther, but that's an exception), so I took a risk on this one. It is mildly amusing and entertaining. Many times I have found myself wanting to write the kind of recommendations found in this book, so I did smile now and then, but found the premise not sustainable and the structure numbingly repetitive. Still, I am mulling over buying her second book, just out, but school is beginning; I guess I will have to wait on that one until I get all these letters of recommendation written. As they say in the LOR business: I recommend this book with reservations and with mild enthusiasm. If you have any career experience in secondary education or college, the issues in this book will sound vaguely and amusingly familiar.

This is a fantastic guidebook that’s easy to carry as you explore London. I was able to find some really great attractions that I wouldn’t easily have found for my third trip- it goes beyond the suggestions you can find online. I was a Rick Steve’s faithful until the guidebooks started having inaccurate information- Frommer gets the details right. Two reasons for the one star deduction- there aren’t a lot of day trip suggestions and it isn’t an easy tear book if you want to take a section to go. Still highly suggest this book!

Excellent guide- easy to read- print not minusculeHave been to London several times and am returning in the fallWanted to get a new guidebook to check out new venues etc.So far it has been on target with recommendations- comes with a map that you can easily read

For some reason what was once a well written travel guide is now written in a millennial style attempt at injecting unintelligent levels of humor into describing tourist sites. Just keep to the facts and let the traveler make the choice.

Like it. Very interesting and informative. Will take it with me when visiting London.

Very informative and giving me great ideas on things to do.

Excellent guide!

The book had the addresses included, gave alternate site seeing tours if the one you wanted was full

Provided most information, but after looking at other things onlilne, felt it left off some sites of interest. However, I guess they can't cover everything. Glad I went with a travel agent.

This charming story will delight young children with a bunny story that teaches kids about better nutrition. A simple story, great pictures and a fun book to read with a favourite child. I tried it out with the child in my life, who is 9, and he enjoyed it, though he thought it was more suited to his younger sister, who is 6. However, my young friend is in Grade 3, where they are currently doing a study unit on better food choices, and he enjoyed the 'older brother' role of having his own knowledge confirmed. Though timed for Easter bunny gifts, I think this one is a perennial winner for parents tired of the demands for hot dogs/pizza pockets/mac and cheese that kids can fixate on. If you want your child (or grandchild) to gain the lifelong skill of healthful and delicious eating, you won't want to miss this book.

We are a family with some diet restrictions so healthy eating has always been a huge priority for me. I have been looking for a fun, enticing book to read with my kiddos to learn about healthy eating choices and I finally found it! This book teaches kids about the healthy qualities and nutrients in fruits and veggies and presents it in a fun, playful manner. My four-year old requests reading this book often; he finds it interesting and challenging to name the fruits and vegetables that he knows, while my two-year olds love the cute bunny hiding on the pages as well as all of the colors and array of colorful fruits and veggies. The book is mainly comprised of high quality photos, so it is very realistic as well as artistic for children of all ages to gain a better understanding of healthy fruits and vegetables. I would highly recommend this book to any one encouraging your kids to eat healthy!

I was thrilled to receive Where Does a Rainbow Grow -- what a lovely follow-up to Give it a Go, Eat a Rainbow! I firmly believe it's crucial for kids to be familiar not only with foods they know well, as well as foods they may or may not have ever eaten, but also to see what those foods look like in their natural environment. Kids (and adults alike) love color and this book's simple message delivers a big punch! I found myself intrigued to remember what a kiwi tree looked like, and that kohlrabi was purple! I gifted Give it a Go, Eat a Rainbow to a dear friend's kids which produced an excitement for them when they shopped for veggies and am now so excited to gift them Where Does a Rainbow Grow to see their exuberance grow at their local farmers market! Keep it up Kathryn and Alex -- these books are GREAT!

I am passionate about healthy living, I have a masters degree in early childhood education and I am currently a stay at home mom to 4 (vegetarian) children under the age of 11, so I was delighted to get this book in the mail yesterday! What a beautiful, vibrant, fun book for children of all ages. I was especially excited about the pictures. I am a huge fan of this style of illustration. My father grew up farming. I think it is so important that children have an understanding and appreciation of where their food comes from. I appreciate that this book gives children this important understanding in a fun, straightforward way.I am looking forward to getting the first book, Give it a go, Eat a rainbow.

As a nutrition education and farm to school program coordinator for a public school district, I am always on the lookout for new ways to engage students with healthy eating. We had a special "Give It a Go, Eat a Rainbow" event at one of our schools and it was so wonderful to see the preschoolers getting excited about eating colorful fruits and veggies. Blake helped inspire our students to eat a healthy rainbow and Sammy the Bunny will most certainly inspire them to learn more about where those colorful foods come from. With all of the crazy "food" options these days, it is so important to have tools like this to teach kids about fruits and veggies and encourage healthy eating habits.I would highly recommend both of Kathryn Kemp Guylay's books for students in preschool and lower elementary school grades.

This is a fun picture book for preschoolers and early elementary students. It teaches children about a number of vegetables and some of their health properties in a fun and engaging way. Children will have lots of fun finding Sammy the bunny on each page. The rhyming text and pictures are great. This would be a perfect present to add to the Easter basket of your child or grandchild.

This is a great book to teach kiddos how to identify all kinds of fruits and veggies (and colors!) with cute rhyming text and bright engaging pictures little one will want to read this again and again!

My three-year-old loves the cute pictures, and interactive questions. As a dad, I like that this book teachers her the value of healthy eating. It's a fun, informative, and engaging book.

Absolutely Everything!: A History of Earth, Dinosaurs, Rulers, Robots and Other Things Too Numerous to Mention, by Christopher Lloyd

From School Library Journal

Gr 4-8-The history of Earth, from the big bang to the Black Lives Matter movement, in a little over 300 pages. That's the premise, anyway, of this attempt at an overview of just about everything. Organized chronologically, with pithy chapter headings such as "Meanwhile, in the Americas" and "Medieval Misery," this title features a lot of text to churn through, with only occasional drawings and captions. That said, the writing is engaging and thoughtful, providing plenty of information, humor, and opportunity for deeper thinking as Lloyd makes connections to things happening across the globe. He takes a surprisingly deep dive into the various prehistorical eras. Human conflicts throughout history share equal time with important inventions and the arts, though individuals are infrequently mentioned-the focus is on groups of people and events. An extensive glossary, a list of further reading, and quote sources are appended, along with a note from the author about his research process. VERDICT Most libraries will want to have this lengthy, detailed volume for students looking to beef up their general knowledge.-Jody Kopple, Shady Hill School, Cambridge, MAα(c) Copyright 2011. Anything that can teach my nephew a little bit about something, I always try to give it to him. He is like a sponge with reading and learning.

Nice book kids love it

I got this for my ten year old grandson for Christmas. I didn't get much of a chance to look at it but he LOVED it! In fact his whole family loved it, parents and older siblings alike. It was easy enough for him to read and understand and engrossing enough for everyone else to enjoy.

O.K., so let's pretend you're a kid. (And if you are a kid, good for you.) What do you know about things, what do you sort of know, and what do you have no idea about? If the answer is "a little, some, and a lot", then this book could be very interesting. The hook is that the book starts with the Big Bang and covers everything up to what happened yesterday. That's sort of jokey, but what does the book actually accomplish?Well, it's a bit of a bumpy ride because the author does have to keep switching gears. We start with the Big Bang, which gets once-over-easy treatment. We move on to planetary science and some cosmology. Soon enough we focus on Earth, and do plate tectonics and the like. All of this is done briskly and it seemed to me that it was so brief it worked mostly just to get some big ideas on the table. Luckily, from that start we move on to the emergence of life and move through the various geologic ages of Earth, pointing out interesting life forms, (dinosaurs!), as we go. This is more familiar territory and is very kid friendly. The book picked up more appeal and interest for me when we got to the emergence of humans and early civilizations. This is a big chunk of the book, (about a third), and falls into that broad "World Civilization" category. Africa, China and India get a lot of overdue attention before we turn our focus to Europe, and that alone recommended the book to me. Plus, once we get to the fall of Rome the book switches gears and heads to the Americas, including, amazingly, mostly South America, which never seems to get much attention in these world histories. So again, I was impressed by the range exhibited here. Now, this World Civilization part is a bit bumpy, (mostly from the picking and choosing the author had to do), and the tone varies from a bit jokey to more in depth, but it all struck me as a fairly credible attempt to touch on the big ideas - Greece, Rome, the Fertile Crescent, Persia, Egypt, China, the Indus Valley, major religions, the pre-Columbian Americas.A bit past the half-way mark we turn to a more traditional framework. We start with a generous nod to the intellectual accomplishments of the Muslim World, go Medieval in Europe, then skip to global exploration, revolutions in science, and then the various nations of the world at various wars between 1845 and 1945. Obviously there are some big gaps there, since the last chapter is just a pretty short treatment of the post-World War II era. The upshot, to me, is that this ended up feeling a bit like "Ancient" World Civ with a long postscript, which actually made sense on reflection. But of course the book can't really be about everything. As a world timeline that hit the early big ticket items and then surveyed events closer to the present, this actually worked pretty well. It's as evenhanded as such a project could be, and shallow in many places, but it is aimed at younger readers and seems to be intended to at least get a lot of the places, people, events and ideas that matter into a kid reader's head. On that score this worked fairly well and I wouldn't hesitate to put this into a young readers hands.Reflecting on this, I thought about all of those time/place travel chapter books like "Magic Treehouse" and "Time Warp Trio" and the like. Kids in those books are always going to Rome or Egypt or the Great Wall of China or Mayan Temples. This book strings all of that together into a coherent story and time line. If that's all an elementary school or middle grade reader gets - an annotated timeline with a worldwide range - that's quite an achievement.(Please note that I received a free advance will-self-destruct-in-x-days Adobe Digital copy of this book without a review requirement, or any influence regarding review content should I choose to post a review. Apart from that I have no connection at all to either the author or the publisher of this book.)

Great book

Great

My grandson loves this book..

The cover art will make you want to open this book. That's a given. Inside though, be ready for words like "probably," "maybe," and "perhaps."Starting from a detailed description of the Big Bang Theory to the tossing out of numbers like "13.8billion years ago" giant red flags popped up in my mind. I don't carry beliefs of either of those. However, as a reviewer and a homeschooling parent, I know that there are many beliefs out there in the world at large (aka Worldview) and it is wise to know what "others think" as we are all part of this human race.I continued on in this book from that point of view: that this is definitely, unequivocally NOT a book written with a young Earth view and Creationism in mind. If a family holds to other beliefs than what is presented as facts within this book, they'd want to sit along side and read with or at least have discussions with the child over the course of the book. That aside...I can say the language used throughout the text is definitely written to upper elementary level kids and older. Junior high grades would be spot-on. A younger child might enjoy being read to from this book while looking at the illustrations. Original drawings are scattered throughout along with a sprinkling of photographs, making the entire book visually appealing. The reader is helped along the way to keep the time period being discussed in mind with the righthand side "timeline" on the page edges.Difficult concepts are conversationally explained to the reader often while calling the reader to action such as "Remember when ..." or asking them a question directly. Quotations from scientists and doctors as well as small illustrations depicting snippets from the adjacent large body of text, does leave the book often wavering on the edge of feeling like a textbook at times. Again, though, the conversational style writing is well-played for the intended audience of the readers verging into and ensconced in the middle school level of thinking. One can easily justify this book for purchase. This is a hefty book that simply retells thoughts, hypotheses, theories, and popular belief. It isn't all encompassing and defends that impossibility early on, regardless of the title. Whether used to strengthen ones knowledge base, get a quick glimpse at a variety of things and how they fit into the timeline, or used as a pros/cons volume of conversation starters, this book holds it own value on a bookshelf. Home educators would definitely get use from this book no matter what side of "all that so-called science" they stand on.
