The neo-liberal economic policies—privatization, free trade, slashed social spending—that the Chicago School and the economist Milton Friedman have foisted on the world are catastrophic in two senses, argues this vigorous polemic. Because their results are disastrous—depressions, mass poverty, private corporations looting public wealth, by the author's accounting—their means must be cataclysmic, dependent on political upheavals and natural disasters as coercive pretexts for free-market reforms the public would normally reject. Journalist Klein (No Logo) chronicles decades of such disasters, including the Chicago School makeovers launched by South American coups; the corrupt sale of Russia's state economy to oligarchs following the collapse of the Soviet Union; the privatization of New Orleans's public schools after Katrina; and the seizure of wrecked fishing villages by resort developers after the Asian tsunami. Klein's economic and political analyses are not always meticulous. Likening free-market shock therapies to electroshock torture, she conflates every misdeed of right-wing dictatorships with their economic programs and paints a too simplistic picture of the Iraq conflict as a struggle over American-imposed neo-liberalism. **FYI** Please note to the best of my knowledge I am NOT related to Naomi Klein.**If you wonder what happened to the middle class, why poverty is on the rise and what the economies in a democracracy, dictatorship and "communism" have in common, you'll find lots of food for thought in Naomi Klein's THE SHOCK DOCTRINE. Tracing the rise of the "Chicago Boys" laissez-faire economic beliefs, their impact on South America, China, Russia, Poland and South Africa and how it impacted their form of government, Klein makes a compelling argument for the flaws in Milton Friedman's economic science.Naomi Klein's book looks at the conflict between Milton Friedman's "laissez-faire" approach to business and government where business is largely unregulated running itself and government is little more than a bare bones system. According to Klein, Friedman believed that the economic theories he espoused would be perfect and that any problems with it would be due to outside forces interferring with his free market world. His approach was in complete contrast to Keynes who believed that the prime mission of politicians and economists was to prevent unemployment and avoid a depression or recession by regulating the market place. People like John Kenneth Galbraith (heir to Keynes' mantle)believed part of the purpose of economic regulation was to keep our captalist system fair and prevent a small group of businesses from dominating the market. Galbraith also believed in bills like the Glass-Steagall act which created a firewall between Wall Street and various banking institutions (which former President Clinton helped to eliminate). The net result would be to prevent recreating disasters like the Great Depression and 1929 stock market crash (the current version of which contributed to part of the economic mess we're in today).It's the conflict between these two economic philosphies that allows our economic world to thrive. You'll have to decide for yourself how accurately she reflects each man's philosphy based on what you know about each respective philosphy but I found, for the most part, that the book gave a pretty accurate summation of the benefits and issues at the core of each, as well as which classes benefit the most.Klein suggests that "disaster capitalism", i.e., introducing radical changes in terms of economic and government policy when a country is in "shock" (taking advantage of the fact that massed resistence is unlikely to that change), is allowing the rise of unchecked multi-national corporations that take advantage of and damage our society in the process. She suggests that Friedman's beliefs that the market will manage itself and that free market capitalism undermined the Soviet Union is an idealized and naive belief. The impact for good and bad is that a business functions like a plant. If it receives too much sunlight and water, it will overgrow and strangle out everything else in the economic ecosystem. The net result would cause the system to become unbalanced with human suffering and economic disaster as the result if left unchecked. She traces a parallel path between the rise of Friedman's economic philosphy and the rise of human rights violations, rise and fall of various governments throughout the world and the opportunism of the business world to exploit it.She ties all of this together looking at the economic policies and beliefs that are reshaping American society--for good and bad--into a different society where the gap between the wealthy and the poor continues to expand and one where the free market society is being radically retooled. The result is a society where the rich grow richer and the poor grow poorer. The pressured middle class continues to shrink. This undermines the foundation of our economic growth. This book will probably divide those along the more extreme political lines but has the ring of truth nevertheless.Klein crafts a fascinating book. Although some of her observations might be a bit of a stretch and her arguments occasionally flawed, she provides compelling evidence to support her thesis and connects the dots of events that might otherwise appear to be unrelated. Whether or not you agree with Klein or are outraged by her evidence, you'll find plenty of food for thought in her book.

This is a very good book indeed. It is powerful, eye-opening, and disturbing. Kline gives a gripping narative for the most part. I say for the most part because sometimes the narative seems repetitive. The book also appears to be well documented.Naomi Kline paints a picture of how the corporate world, neoliberal economists, and polticians worked to take advantage of communities and countries in shock because of some calamity—political, economic, and natural. They move in and inact free-trade, drastric cuts in govenrment, reduced taxes (for the rich), dump price controls, and deregulation. These changes benefit no one except the rich, the poltical leaders, and foreign corporations, who are aften one and the same. The poor in these places go from worse to worser.The book begins with shock treatment experiments funded by the CIA with possible applications to interagation. The idea was to wipe a person brain clean. They also developed sensory deprivation, and thus acting together to destroy the self to be built anew. The next preliminary topic is the Chicago School Economics led by Milton Freedman at the University of Chicago which developed neoliberalism, which to me is a misnomer, seeing how it is a very conservative doctrine.The book, then moves on to the historical picture to see how these ideas were practice in the real world outside of the academy. South America is presented with the shock of political upheaval, starting with Chile. Also in South America, it discusses the debt crisises that occurred following the ouster of strong arm governments. It covers Poland, Russia, and South Africa with their peaceful transfer of power with the economic shift inserted in with little notice, putting the poor in dire straits. It also goes into United States' shocks. One is the Iraq war after 9/11 and the privatization of war. Privatization is also shown to be at work in the hurricane Katrina disaster to the detriment of the New Orleans poor. Coverage is given to the Asian Tiger's financial currency debacle and the recovery from the Tsunami that hit many coastal areas in the Indian ocean basin in 2004.In the last section, Kline does hold out some hopefulness, as she describes people's efforts in recent years to counter the neoliberals and corporatists to take over of many country's economies.I recommend this book, especially for those who have a concern for the poor. Readers are never allowed to forget the danger the boys are in as they encounter friends and foes and attempt to discern whom they can trust. Bailly's painterly artwork is well suited to the compelling, well-told narrative. Unfortunately, it is crowded on dense, dialogue-heavy and tightly packed pages, preventing readers to view more closely the detailed, layered artwork. This title will appeal to readers interested in memoirs about World War II and has enough action to hold their attention. "This marvelously conceived and executed graphic memoir, adapted from Joffo's 1973 book of the same name, tells the story of four Jewish brothers who spend WWII hiding from Nazi soldiers in Vichy France. When the Germans arrive, the boys' father sends them off in pairs to separate destinations, instructing them never to reveal their Jewish identities to anyone. The two younger boys, Jo (the author) and Maurice, travel from city to city, always one step ahead of arrest. Sometimes they're saved by decent French citizens ('Oh, the children are with me,' says a priest, casually). More often, desperation makes the boys quick-witted, as when they persuade an interrogator that what appears to be circumcision is the result of surgery for adhesions. The brothers' courage, Joffo makes clear in the story's early pages, has its source in their father's valor. He dies in the camps, but his wife and sons survive. Bailly's artwork carries much of the story's emotional impact―every character is drawn with care, and every scene is crammed with atmospheric detail. Jo and Maurice, brothers who have to use their street smarts to survive, are very appealing young men. The panels of this novel are amazingly detailed and easily transport the reader back to 1940s Paris and environs. I got my first Scramber in 1967 and lost it a year later to somebody who poached it off the streets of San Francisco in the dark of night. Since then I've owned several more of them including the 1965 now in my basement.Scramblers have always held the promise of mystery and adventure. Where does the world lead when the pavement ends ...Bill takes you through the Scrambler history step by step. From the first bizarre experimental models to the last iterations that were more stylized street bike than dirt worthy. Honda is only now getting back to their roots with the CRF250L.Honda proved that there was a market for dual sport bikes and this book chronicles every step of the way.Highly recommended

Bill Silver is probably the premiere CB/CL 72/77 Honda guru. This book is truly stunning for the early Honda Scrambler enthusiast. The pictures and materials are breathtaking. I want to personally thank Mr. Silver for putting this book together. I thought that I had done some serious research on these early bikes, however, this book takes the cake. If you have an interest in the 1962 to 1968 250/305 Honda Scramblers, this book is a must. It's worth EVERY PENNY plus some.

Entertaining history, focused on the 250 scramblers and the early years of American Honda in southern CA. It would have been interesting to include more information on the actual motorcycle development in Japan. It would also have been nice to provide a catalogue of the many later scrambler models and some historical info on each one.

Lots of anecdotal information and not always presented in typical book fashion with a smooth transition from one model to the next. Many of the passages were quotes from other people.

Very through...if you have ever owned a Honda Scrambler or are thinking about getting one this is a must read.

I had read "The Ultimate Question" in 2006 and read this updated edition to see how Fred Reichheld updated the approach in a business environment that has become more social. In addition, I've been tracking his website and conference announcements over the past 6 months and have a friend who has made presentations about how his company has implemented the Net Promoter program. It seems this approach is gathering momentum, and why not -- it's much more practical than taking mind-numbing surveys about every aspect of the company's business model and customer experience.The focus on only one key question with follow-up is something every employee can conceptually understand and relate to each customer with whom s/he interacts. So the straightfowardness and elegance of the approach solves a major problem many organizations have with implementing such programs. As another reviewer commented, it seems a little bit of overkill to have a whole book to explain that.The bigger issue in my opinion is whether the organization's culture will empower employees to do something to improve a customer experience on the spot to rescue a 0-6 detractor to make that interaction successful. And bigger picture, are the employees able to recognize how current practices could be improved so as to make improvements in best practices and customer experiences that would elevate more customer responses to '9's' and 10's' across the whole organization? To me, this is the bigger challenge and one the book doesn't get into as much. Perhaps that's to be expected because each culture is different and there may not be one best way for that to be done.My friend's company was a great candidate for implementing Net Promoter because much had been done to put their employees into positions where they were empowered to delight the customer, to suggest best practice improvements to their supervisors, and to lobby for their acceptance. Once they've been enabled to do those things, then Net Promoter would be easily implemented.

I recently completed reading The Ultimate Question 2.0[i] by Fred Reichheld. This is the second version of his book explaining and extolling the virtues of the Net Promoter Score or NPS. I was already quite familiar with the NPS methodology having pioneered its use in IT outsourcing. However, I found that the book still had much to commend it.I took a number of key lessons from the book:First, and foremost, the real power of NPS is as part of long-term strategy that places the customer at the heart of business. Reichheld contrasts "good profits" - earned from delighted repeat customers who promote the product to others - with "bad profits" where customers are "misled, mistreated, ignored or coerced". If, other factors cause companies to pursue "bad profits", NPS results will inevitably be poor and cosmetic improvement programs will achieve little.A good NPS score (absolutely or relative to competitors) is NOT an end in itself. The end is sustained competitive advantage and profitable growth.The NPS question and zero-to-ten scale is a straightforward, highly effective approach. It is easy to calculate, understand and compare with others. It does not need to be tailored.Contextual factors are critical to success. These include:Executive commitment and sponsorship. All of the successful case studies featured a direct personal involvement from the CEO;Pervasiveness of NPS-focus. NPS results must gain equal currency and importance within an organization as other management information including financial targets and performance;A closed loop feedback system. The process must embrace timely follow up to the survey respondents from those who have the ability to act upon their comments.Employee Net Promoter Scores (eNPS) have a strong correlation with customer results as engaged employees play a vital role in building customer loyalty.The lessons learned from the many companies cited in the book (e.g. Charles Schwab, Intuit, Phillips, Allianz, Virgin Media) parallel my own experience in implementing the methodology. Despite (or perhaps because of) its simplicity we encountered serious resistance to its introduction. Those responsible for existing customer satisfaction surveys doubted the validity of the NPS methodology, wanted to customize the question, and include it in a much large survey. In the book Reichheld quotes a dictum from Upton Sinclair "it is difficult to get a man to understand something when his salary depends upon not doing so". My version would "it is difficult to get a man to explain things simply, when his profession requires them to be complicated". We also encountered sample bias, with the exclusion of probable detractors. Ironically, one major customer opted out of the survey completely as our use of their feedback would provide an unfair advantage over other suppliers. A preserve rationale if ever there was. As with the examples of the book, patient persistence was necessary to implement a global approach.The one area where the methodology remains incomplete is in the "cost benefit analysis" of implementation of the methodology and improvement of the score. Whilst intuitively, a higher NPS would suggest better financial results "remarkably few firms can confidently quantify the value if improving loyalty (more promoters, fewer detractors) for specific customers or segments". The book provides examples of microeconomic analyses for the impact of NPS on business-to-consumer (b2c) companies. However, the business-to-business (b2b) market is more complex. Here the average NPS for all consumers of the service should, in theory, suggest the overall "loyalty" of the customer organization. However, in practice, many other factors - such as governance, contract duration, and switching costs - come into the equation.So, back to the ultimate question" about "The Ultimate Question 2.0". My answer is 10. I do recommend it and furthermore recommend that you go on to implement the methodology. As Reichheld evangelizes, "The knowledge you can gain from implementing the Net Promoter System is in fact priceless. It will help you run a better business, do more satisfying work, and build relationships that yield a more fulfilling life". Now who would not recommend that?

Rating a book about people rating things. It's like Amazon Inception. Its not the most thrilling read, and it looks at NPS through rose colored glasses. This second version should really do something to address criticism of NPS, instead of just saying critics are wrong. But I think it's part of a plan to get you to hire Bain for your company.But it's also been really helpful for me. I took a job in my company where we are implementing the system and this has helped fill in the gaps with terminology and certain plans we are looking to act on. So if your company or organization is an NPS org, or moving towards it, a recommended read for sure.

I have been in the field of marketing and market research for more than 8 years. As one of the people involved in managing Brand Trackers, Customer Sat and NPS at the companies I work in, I have always been intrigued by this concept. I have to say, this book is an absolute winner. Loads of amazing examples, description of NPS in practice and adequate explanation of concepts makes it a perfect reading. Moreover, it makes you think about other things you can do around NPS. The book talks about all things that can be impacted by NPS and things that can impact NPS. Makes your mind move. One downside - some things do get repetitive in the book. You think - did I just read this earlier? The book can be cut down by 5% I think. But overall, I love the book and recommend to anyone who is in marketing, research, customer experience teams OR in general to anyone who is interested in learning about how to create a customer focused company and measure such success. So many books waste your time and money. Worth every penny and a keeper for the rest of my professional career. I am a promoter for this book - 10 on 10. I also will wait for the 3.0 version - which will of course bring the next set of learnings on this amazing topic. Or - will simply try and join the NPS Loyalty Forum. :)

I've been using biblical commentaries since shortly after The Jerome Biblical Commentary (1968) came out. We were so grateful for that (and later for The New Jerome Biblical Commentary, the Collegeville Biblical Commentary, and for Barkley's NT commentary). But how commentaries have evolved and improved over the years! I would guess that this commentary on Luke is written for the educated layman as well as for layman and clerics deeply interested in Scripture for teaching, personal edification and/or homily preparation.This commentary is engagingly-written and well-illustrated, with very helpful sidebars, which give more information while not overloading the main text. It would be helpful to have more than the one map of what looks life ancient Israel, but the map unfortunately isn't titled. Also, the Glossary is quite short, as are the indexes to the Sidebars and "Pastoral Topics." Sometimes I wonder what the editors of such texts are thinking, or not thinking, in trying to make books more useful to readers.A significant contribution of this commentary is the balance between exegetical and spiritual/theological reflections on the biblical texts. When our parish small group was studying the Gospel of Luke (using the Little Rock Scripture Study) earlier this year, I used this text (when I finally discovered it) to supplement some of the more challenging passages, and found it very helpful, as it includes both textual criticism and spiritual reflection.This commentary will be very useful to homilists, teachers, catechists, and others learning and teaching Scripture. It is part of the multi-volume "Catholic Commentary on Sacred Scripture."

I love that Catholic Commentaries on Sacred Scripture now include all 4 of the Evangelists (Matthew, Mark, Luke and John). I have only read commentary on a couple of chapters so far, but think Gadenz has done a great job adding clarity to Christ's words by explaining the norms and customers of when Jesus walked the face of the earth. A MUST HAVE along with the others!

Henry Orth Hirt's presentation to the Newcomen Society (1971) recounts a straightforward and largely chronological history of the Erie Insurance Exchange, a reciprocal insurance organization that he co-founded in 1924/5 and for which he served as much -- probably most -- of the driving force. Hirt is generous in crediting others for their contributions to the business and the expansion of the organization's vision. He makes no mention, however, of the possible role played by his involvement with democratic socialism -- he served as editor and business manager of the Socialist Party weekly newspaper, The Truth, during and after World War I -- in his and others' interest in the insurance industry.
