I recommend this book for anyone who suffers from writer's block or writing anxiety. I like that it reads as a tutor to student format. When you're done reading it you'll feel more confident with your writing.

It was nice to get a few tips, though the book could have been a little longer and offered more advice.

One of the most moving Holocaust teen books!

I had a test in history and I need it to read this book. It was great and I got an A.

There are a lot of books on the Holocaust but not many of them talk in detail about the actual journeys to the camps, the trains. This book, which is about as low-key as it can be given the topic, is about a twelve-year-old girl, Alice, being deported to Auschwitz, and almost the entire story takes place in the cattle car, packed in with dozens of other miserable Jews. The grimness and inhumanity of the surroundings is quite evident. The wretched people quickly fill their waste bucket and finally just eliminate in a corner, and eventually the whole car floods. A nice young man is shot to death when he tries to escape. Although it's not explicitly stated, Alice is sent to certain death in the last chapter of the book. However, more important is the protagonist's journey of self-discovery.As the train rolls onward to its destination, so does Alice learn more and more things about her life that she never knew. Extremely naive in the beginning -- she was kept shut away by her loving grandfather and was completely unaware of the persecutions and the danger surrounding her -- Alice quickly wises up and realizes the (almost) entire truth of the situation. She begins to menstruate during the last pages, a symbol of her new emotional maturity.Children would appreciate this book and I don't think it's too graphic for them, but adults will also appreciate it for the many layers of meaning in the story.

The book was a marvelous book but it also makes you feel grief, and sadness for the main characters. A young girl, Alice, who is Jewish, has been taken away from her home by men she has no clue are. Taken with her, were her grandparents. Alice lives with them because her parents had to myssteriously leave the country, she hadn't heard from them in a while. Alice's granmother also dissaperas at the train station where they were taken by the strange men. So now its Alice and her grandfather left alone on the train for who know how long? Maybe days. Along with them there is a family of 5, a strange old man, and other mysterious characters you will read about. So Alice's journey begins on this train of the unknown, no idea where she is going or what will happen to her and her grandfather when they get there. While you read this book you will discover that its about good and evil and who wins doesn't matter but what really matters is that bravery faces the face of evil.

Attending a german school in 8th grade ('95), I first read this book (in it's original german) for a book rewiew and thoroughly enjoyed it. The story about a girl named Alice describes what it was like for Jews and others to travel to the concetration camps on cattle cars with the unending thirst, heat/cold, death, excrement and fear. It has a double importance for me because Mrs. Pausewang came to our area library and gave a speech on her writing. She is actually a surviving victim of the holocaust herself so she wrote this with experience. The end of the book is a really touching one as is the rest of the story. This story was one of my first favorite books. In fact, I liked it so much, I had my dad pick up a copy of it on a return trip to Germany so I would have it. Now, while doing research for my college Holocaust class I found out that it is translated into English so more people are able to read this wonderful story. Now I can finally recommend it to everyone.

This book was so sad. The vivd details of the train ride and the way they little girl "Mousie" felt was so vivid and descriptive. I'm rating this book the very best like it deserves. Gudrun Pasewang really did his homework to make this story as moving as it was. I recommend this book to ANYONE who is questing the Holocaust from the camps to the train rides to the horror everyone Jewish or not everyone felt the pain. As Alice was waiting for her parents to come back from the dentist's camp where her mother was being kept due to a tooth ache, her and her grandparents were taken away. As the horrifing ride went on she lost people she loved. Then he describes they worries she felt as she walked into the showers. I wish everyone could have the chance to read this book.

The Final Journey is a story about the holocaust and a young girl and her grandfather and their troubles as they travel on a cramped train to a concentration camp. The main character (Alice Dubsky) acts like a spoiled six-year-old and through the book she slowly matures to act above her age, because of the things an older girl teaches her while she slowly becomes her friend through the long journey. The book tells all about her hardships like when her grandfather dies right in front of her eyes. Another thing that Alice learns is to share. When people are running out of food she learns to give up the only things she has left and give them to other people in more need than she is. The Final Journey is a very sad and touching story that you enjoy very much.

Gudrun Pausewang is an amazing author! When she wrote The Final Journey, she thought of things no one else would have...The train ride. This page turning story is about Alice Dubsky, a little girl from the West, being taken away from her home with her grandmother and grandfather. Alice witnesses some pretty scary things on this train ride, like not having a lot of food or water, and having to go to the bathroom in the corner of the cattle car. Alice also learns about what will eventually happen to her. Gudrun has explained Alice's journey so well! You will cry so hard for a very long time, I did!

I truly enjoy the clear and concise way that Karen Curry Parker presents the system of Human Design. Much of this information is the basics, which are covered even more thoroughly in her other books. But this is still worth reading even if only to refresh and reinforce. As always, Karen’s Heart, her desire to help, and her belief in the beauty and power of human potential shines through her words and teachings.

Karen has an uncanny way of describing in simple terms our Human Design. I no longer think of myself as square peg, round hole, A self defeating behavior. I now know my design and have a roadmap to follow to be my best self!

A clear, concise introduction to Human Design. I love the way the data is summarized into tables. I'm excited to share this with my clients.

This is a great beginner guide to understanding and using Human Design in your life. Everyone who is on a personal growth journey should read it!

Great in depth and dynamic synthesis of info. Easy read! I finished it on my 2.5 hr flight! Worth the read

Is Human Design a PUZZLE for you? Well, I read a $10 easy to understand Human Design book that made the HD concepts FLOW for me. This book made these 'crazy puzzle pieces' come together for me in a way that I can totally relate. The layout of this provides a FRAME for the HD puzzle and how to put the pieces together...and it is much easier than the way I was attempting to do it on my own!!! This provided me with 'ease'!! It showed me which puzzle pieces to put in the frame first and what the meaning of each. After reading this book, I can just use this info to effectively use HD in my life OR I can continue to dig deeper (via HD Courses). Now, I understand the relevance and value of HD in my life. I also grasped why knowing and understanding HD for those who are important in my life.So yes, this book really showed me how the puzzle pieces fit together --the impacts of your chart on the REALITY of YOUR OWN LIFE and the same thing about HD for those around you (e.g. significant others and children and parents).I highly recommend it for those who have just started exploring Human Design or for those who want to share the gift of understanding HD for those around them.

I’ve been a student of Human Design for 10 years and following it’s guidelines has dramatically altered my understanding of myself and others. This book is succinct and makes it easy to understand the basics of HD.

#185,122 in Books (See Top 100 in Books)

I absolutely love this book. Computer Science is my hobby, and a major part of my profession; thus making this book indispensable in terms of providing historical value to understanding CS roots. Reading this work has opened my mind to pioneers such as Charles Sanders Pierce, the father of pragmatism, and his numerous collections of philosophic, logical and mathematical writings. Furthermore, there is an endless array of notable reads that should be attempted; and not just by those who study computer science. For example, the writings of Euclid, George Boole, Russel Bertrand and much more. I highly recommend this to anyone who wants to "feel" what computer science truly is. Alan Turing's work is so influential and most people fail to realize its significance. Therefore do yourself the favor and pick this book up, you will not regret it, and likely it will help shape your mind as it did mine. Enjoy!

The best thing about this book is it will leave you hungering for more details from e.g. Martin Davis' Computability and Unsolvability.A Turing Machine in this book is described differently from what you'd find in Charles Petzold's The Annotated Turing. Instead of being in tabular form it's described by a "state diagram." These diagrams are introduced to describe finite automata, and a Turing Machine is presented as a finite automaton with additional capabilities. So in addition to accepting and non-accepting states that halt, a TM can also diverge (not halt). It's an appealing way to learn about TMs.The author is a mathematician, but you don't need experience reading definition-theorem-proof textbooks. In fact there's a section toward the end of the book titled Proof by Contradiction containing a thorough proof that sqrt(2) is not a rational number.I had a few "that's cool as s**t" moments while reading the book. One example is the tag system for the modified Collatz function. There were a couple places in the book I found unconvincing due to the introduction of an underspecified new type of TM. The multi-tape TM in the section RAMs Can Be Emulated by Turing Machines, Chap 6. And the TM that depends on the results of two other TMs running simultaneously in parallel in the proof on page 117.Professor Bernhardt is an excellent writer and Turing's Vision is a fine introduction to computation.

This is an excellent book on Turing and computability. It explains the halting problem in an intuitive and clear manner that I could not find in dozens of other books and papers. The author is able to highlight the important ideas that are the foundations of computability. The style is clear, readable and friendly. The length of the book is also very reasonable. I wish he explained more clearly the difference between the Entscheidungsproblem (proved impossible by Turing) and formal completeness (proved impossible by Godel). Nonetheless, this is an excellent book, for which I congratulate the author for such a wonderful work.

Turing's Vision gives the reader an overview of the logic required to understand the foundations of computability and computer science. Most works on Turing for the popular audience focus on his remarkable life but in this book the author tries to convey the core ideas of what computability is how computation can take place and the limits on what is computable. The author gives a history of where mathematical logic stood at the turn of the century and takes the reader through how Turing solved a major outstanding problem posed by Hilbert. The book is accessible to the general audience but this is a mathematical text so patience is often required. The book starts out by describing the world in the early 20th century from a mathematicians perspective. In particular the author covers topics like the goal of formalizing all of mathematics so that any statement could be proven or disproven within that system as well as the entscheidungsproblem, which was effectively the halting problem. The author goes through the foundations of arithmetic and gives a quick overview of things like Gödel's results on the incompleteness of any mathematical system to describe itself fully using its axioms. The author covers the history as well as people working on these logic questions and gives a rough overview of who was working on what to the reader. The author then goes on to describe finite automata, a computational system which can answer a wide array of questions and the author also shows what cannot be computed by finite automata. The author describes Turing machines and how they cover and extend the boundaries of what can be computed by finite automata as well as what things like polynomial time and NP problems are. Though not comprehensive the book remains accessible so its definitely quite refreshing for the non-mathematician reader. The author then spends time on some more formal mathematics, in particular lambda calculus, a system of computing that is equivalent to Turing's more intuitive machine. Parts of the book like this add to completeness but can be skipped over by the reader less interested in all the logical structure behind the ideas. The author spends time on how to correspond Turing machines to finite automata. It is quite remarkable how certain problems are easily solved in one system but incredibly complicated in others. Modern computer architecture is covered briefly so theory becomes practical but these details are covered quite casually. The author then goes back to logic to cover the initial question posed at the beginning and goes through logical paradoxes when one looks at sets which refer to themselves. This concept is shown to be relevant for programs which are trying to decide on whether programs will halt or not and that impossibility is why the halting problem cannot be solved. The mathematical side of the book is furthered toward the end as the author spends time on understanding diagonalization arguments that are required to follow Turing's original argument. The author then goes on to discuss what can be computed as a consequence of these results from counting and cardinality. The author ends with a brief history of Turing and his work and life, it is very brief so just ties actual events to the book.Turing's Vision is a introduction to the foundational logic required to understand what a turing machine can and cannot do and what the nature of computation is. The reader gets a sense of the limits of what can be answered by a computer and why. There are other books which have a similar reader level like The Annotated Turing for example which are very good but this book focuses more on the logic side rather than deciphering the paper that Turing wrote. For the more technically inclined reader this is recommended but it is approachable for those who are willing to go through some more formal arguments

good story

I was hoping for more about the development of computer technology, sort of a timeline. The author tried to simplify the concepts and terms used in this field, but I still had trouble following it. But that's because of my own limitations grasping abstract processes.

What an outstanding, ground-up view of the technology and thinking that informs an increasing amount of how and what tools we use virtually every day to make decisions and, well, live.

The Book Thief (Anniversary Edition)

Review

“Brilliant and hugely ambitious…Some will argue that a book so difficult and sad may not be appropriate for teenage readers…Adults will probably like it (this one did), but it’s a great young-adult novel…It’s the kind of book that can be life-changing, because without ever denying the essential amorality and randomness of the natural order, The Book Thief offers us a believable hard-won hope…The hope we see in Liesel is unassailable, the kind you can hang on to in the midst of poverty and war and violence. Young readers need such alternatives to ideological rigidity, and such explorations of how stories matter. And so, come to think of it, do adults.” -New York Times"The Book Thief is unsettling and unsentimental, yet ultimately poetic. Its grimness and tragedy run through the reader's mind like a black-and-white movie, bereft of the colors of life. Zusak may not have lived under Nazi domination, but The Book Thief deserves a place on the same shelf with The Diary of a Young Girl by Anne Frank and Elie Wiesel's Night. It seems poised to become a classic." -USA Today"Zusak doesn’t sugarcoat anything, but he makes his ostensibly gloomy subject bearable the same way Kurt Vonnegut did in Slaughterhouse-Five: with grim, darkly consoling humor.” -Time Magazine"Elegant, philosophical and moving...Beautiful and important." -Kirkus Reviews, Starred"This hefty volume is an achievement...a challenging book in both length and subject..." -Publisher's Weekly, Starred "One of the most highly anticipated young-adult books in years." -The Wall Street Journal"Exquisitely written and memorably populated, Zusak's poignant tribute to words, survival, and their curiously inevitable entwinement is a tour de force to be not just read but inhabited." -The Horn Book Magazine, Starred"An extraordinary narrative." -SLJ, Starred

Eleven-year-old Liesel Meminger is a foster child who has recently arrived in a small town outside Munich, Germany during WWII. Liesel has been sent to live with Hans and Rosa Huberman, presumably for the small stipend they’ll receive. Liesel is still suffering from the loss of her little brother and the difficult and somewhat mysterious separation from her mother. She takes an immediate like to Hans, who is kind and thoughtful, but takes much longer to warm up to the abrasive Rosa.Liesel makes friends with next-door neighbor Rudy and establishes herself as a self-proclaimed book thief. Becoming unlikely friends with the Mayor’s wife Ilsa affords Liesel the opportunity to read the books in the Mayor’s massive library. Along the way, Liesel is witness to the atrocities of war, heartbreaking events, love, loss and other life-changing events.I saw the movie The Book Thief several years ago and loved it. When I decided it was time to read the book I was absolutely captivated. Although the book is 550 pages long, I read it in just two days – it was THAT good. The book is different in several ways, ways in which I won’t go into in my review. Suffice it to say that I’m glad I saw the movie first and then read the book. I think I might have been disappointed with the movie version if it had happened in opposite order. This just goes to show how well the author has written this important piece of fictionalized history. The time period, location, mood, characters, etc. come to life as the story unfolds.I was surprised at some of the other reviews, stating that the book was just plain depressing. I’m not at all sure how a book that deals with the systematic extinction of a race of people can be written about in an uplifting, happy way. Yet, the book is so much more than a story about a German girl who is living in Nazi Germany during WWII. There are many lovely, tender elements to be found in The Book Thief. The additional anniversary edition footnotes written by the author (at the end of the book) provide wonderful insight.I think it’s extremely important that all generations read books like The Book Thief. This is part of history and, as poet and philosopher George Santayana said, "Those who do not remember the past are doomed to repeat it." This is a book that is emotionally draining, but very much worth the read!

I waited way too long to read this book. I don't even really know why I waited so long, other than Courtney and I started this blog around the same time that I actually bought the book and it took me a while to get to the point where I started reading some of the books that I wanted to read instead of just books that we received requests for.If you follow my blog at all, you know that I love WWII era historical fiction. What I loved about this book is that it showed the lives of average Germans during the war. That's not a perspective I've seen a lot (or ever that I can think of off the top of my head). But Liesel's foster family wasn't exactly average either because they held unfavorable opinions about Jewish people, at least unfavorable by German standards during the war.Another highlight of this story was that it was told from the perspective of Death. It was a bit odd to get used to at first because he jumped around a bit, as Death is wont to do in the course of his work, but once I got used to it, it was a fun way to see things. While death isn't exactly omniscient, he does have access to information that a human narrator wouldn't have.I realize that I'm late enough to this party that you've probably already made up your mind about whether you want to read this book or not, but if you're still on the fence about it, you should absolutely not wait any longer. You're likely to regret it if you do, like I did.Overall I give The Book Thief 5.05 stars.

With a heart full to overflowing and eyes quite moist, I finish this novel of a young waif of a girl in Hitler’s Germany whose body, soul, and spirit ought never have survived her furnace of affliction. Yet survive she does, grittily and even poetically, with the aid of a good friend, a tender father, a Jewish refugee in the basement, a mother whose harshness runs only skin keep, and a traumatized mayor’s wife who loves to have her books stolen. As the old proverb—old but still true for all its rusty years—would tell us, ‘The book is far better than the movie’. This has never been more true than with Markus Zusak’s phenomenal achievement. The book is narrated by Death, the Grim Reaper. Yet he is not an evil presence, indeed his tender observations are endearing. In the end, the circumstances of 1940s Europe keep him far busier than he’d prefer. Yet he cannot take his eyes off these dismal, glorious humans. They haunt him, these human beings do. He sees such majesty in them, and such cruelty. The circumstances that call him into hard labors allow him to peer into the human condition at its best and, simultaneously, at its best.He cannot look away from them, these horrible, beautiful, haunting beings. This reader revels in the deeply biblical substratum of this compelling novel, whether intended by its author or not.The best book I’ve read in a year. And I’m hardly alone, for this work has virtually nailed itself to the top rung of the New York Times Bestsellers List. As another old proverb might have it, 50,000,000 Elvis fans can’t be wrong.Buy it, read it, remember it when you least expect.

Agree with all the others giving one or two stars: who in hell thought this was a good book? the style is exasperating and there is no much meat or story. Some say that is because it was intended to young people, but I wonder how young you have to be to enjoy that kind of writing. Tried to come to terms and finish it but I could not waste more time on this.

The Shock Doctrine: The Rise of Disaster Capitalism, by Naomi Klein

Amazon.com Review

Naomi Klein's The Shock Doctrine advances a truly unnerving argument: historically, while people were reeling from natural disasters, wars and economic upheavals, savvy politicians and industry leaders nefariously implemented policies that would never have passed during less muddled times. As Klein demonstrates, this reprehensible game of bait-and-switch isn't just some relic from the bad old days. It's alive and well in contemporary society, and coming soon to a disaster area near you. "At the most chaotic juncture in Iraq'' civil war, a new law is unveiled that will allow Shell and BP to claim the country's vast oil reservesÂ… Immediately following September 11, the Bush Administration quietly outsources the running of the 'War on Terror' to Halliburton and BlackwaterÂ… After a tsunami wipes out the coasts of Southeast Asia, the pristine beaches are auctioned off to tourist resortsÂ… New Orleans residents, scattered from Hurricane Katrina, discover that their public housing, hospitals and schools will never be re-opened." Klein not only kicks butt, she names names, notably economist Milton Friedman and his radical Chicago School of the 1950s and 60s which she notes "produced many of the leading neo-conservative and neo-liberal thinkers whose influence is still profound in Washington today." Stand up and take a bow, Donald Rumsfeld. There's little doubt Klein's book--which arrived to enormous attention and fanfare thanks to her previous missive, the best-selling No Logo, will stir the ire of the right and corporate America. It's also true that Klein's assertions are coherent, comprehensively researched and footnoted, and she makes a very credible case. Even if the world isn't going to hell in a hand-basket just yet, it's nice to know a sharp customer like Klein is bearing witness to the backroom machinations of government and industry in times of turmoil. --Kim Hughes

From Publishers Weekly

The neo-liberal economic policies—privatization, free trade, slashed social spending—that the Chicago School and the economist Milton Friedman have foisted on the world are catastrophic in two senses, argues this vigorous polemic. Because their results are disastrous—depressions, mass poverty, private corporations looting public wealth, by the author's accounting—their means must be cataclysmic, dependent on political upheavals and natural disasters as coercive pretexts for free-market reforms the public would normally reject. Journalist Klein (No Logo) chronicles decades of such disasters, including the Chicago School makeovers launched by South American coups; the corrupt sale of Russia's state economy to oligarchs following the collapse of the Soviet Union; the privatization of New Orleans's public schools after Katrina; and the seizure of wrecked fishing villages by resort developers after the Asian tsunami. Klein's economic and political analyses are not always meticulous. Likening free-market shock therapies to electroshock torture, she conflates every misdeed of right-wing dictatorships with their economic programs and paints a too simplistic picture of the Iraq conflict as a struggle over American-imposed neo-liberalism. Still, much of her critique hits home, as she demonstrates how free-market ideologues welcome, and provoke, the collapse of other people's economies. The result is a powerful populist indictment of economic orthodoxy. (Sept.) Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

**FYI** Please note to the best of my knowledge I am NOT related to Naomi Klein.**If you wonder what happened to the middle class, why poverty is on the rise and what the economies in a democracracy, dictatorship and "communism" have in common, you'll find lots of food for thought in Naomi Klein's THE SHOCK DOCTRINE. Tracing the rise of the "Chicago Boys" laissez-faire economic beliefs, their impact on South America, China, Russia, Poland and South Africa and how it impacted their form of government, Klein makes a compelling argument for the flaws in Milton Friedman's economic science.Naomi Klein's book looks at the conflict between Milton Friedman's "laissez-faire" approach to business and government where business is largely unregulated running itself and government is little more than a bare bones system. According to Klein, Friedman believed that the economic theories he espoused would be perfect and that any problems with it would be due to outside forces interferring with his free market world. His approach was in complete contrast to Keynes who believed that the prime mission of politicians and economists was to prevent unemployment and avoid a depression or recession by regulating the market place. People like John Kenneth Galbraith (heir to Keynes' mantle)believed part of the purpose of economic regulation was to keep our captalist system fair and prevent a small group of businesses from dominating the market. Galbraith also believed in bills like the Glass-Steagall act which created a firewall between Wall Street and various banking institutions (which former President Clinton helped to eliminate). The net result would be to prevent recreating disasters like the Great Depression and 1929 stock market crash (the current version of which contributed to part of the economic mess we're in today). It's the conflict between these two economic philosphies that allows our economic world to thrive. You'll have to decide for yourself how accurately she reflects each man's philosphy based on what you know about each respective philosphy but I found, for the most part, that the book gave a pretty accurate summation of the benefits and issues at the core of each, as well as which classes benefit the most.Klein suggests that "disaster capitalism", i.e., introducing radical changes in terms of economic and government policy when a country is in "shock" (taking advantage of the fact that massed resistence is unlikely to that change), is allowing the rise of unchecked multi-national corporations that take advantage of and damage our society in the process. She suggests that Friedman's beliefs that the market will manage itself and that free market capitalism undermined the Soviet Union is an idealized and naive belief. The impact for good and bad is that a business functions like a plant. If it receives too much sunlight and water, it will overgrow and strangle out everything else in the economic ecosystem. The net result would cause the system to become unbalanced with human suffering and economic disaster as the result if left unchecked. She traces a parallel path between the rise of Friedman's economic philosphy and the rise of human rights violations, rise and fall of various governments throughout the world and the opportunism of the business world to exploit it.She ties all of this together looking at the economic policies and beliefs that are reshaping American society--for good and bad--into a different society where the gap between the wealthy and the poor continues to expand and one where the free market society is being radically retooled. The result is a society where the rich grow richer and the poor grow poorer. The pressured middle class continues to shrink. This undermines the foundation of our economic growth. This book will probably divide those along the more extreme political lines but has the ring of truth nevertheless.Klein crafts a fascinating book. Although some of her observations might be a bit of a stretch and her arguments occasionally flawed, she provides compelling evidence to support her thesis and connects the dots of events that might otherwise appear to be unrelated. Whether or not you agree with Klein or are outraged by her evidence, you'll find plenty of food for thought in her book.

This is a very good book indeed. It is powerful, eye-opening, and disturbing. Kline gives a gripping narative for the most part. I say for the most part because sometimes the narative seems repetitive. The book also appears to be well documented.Naomi Kline paints a picture of how the corporate world, neoliberal economists, and polticians worked to take advantage of communities and countries in shock because of some calamity—political, economic, and natural. They move in and inact free-trade, drastric cuts in govenrment, reduced taxes (for the rich), dump price controls, and deregulation. These changes benefit no one except the rich, the poltical leaders, and foreign corporations, who are aften one and the same. The poor in these places go from worse to worser. The book begins with shock treatment experiments funded by the CIA with possible applications to interagation. The idea was to wipe a person brain clean. They also developed sensory deprivation, and thus acting together to destroy the self to be built anew. The next preliminary topic is the Chicago School Economics led by Milton Freedman at the University of Chicago which developed neoliberalism, which to me is a misnomer, seeing how it is a very conservative doctrine. The book, then moves on to the historical picture to see how these ideas were practice in the real world outside of the academy. South America is presented with the shock of political upheaval, starting with Chile. Also in South America, it discusses the debt crisises that occurred following the ouster of strong arm governments. It covers Poland, Russia, and South Africa with their peaceful transfer of power with the economic shift inserted in with little notice, putting the poor in dire straits. It also goes into United States' shocks. One is the Iraq war after 9/11 and the privatization of war. Privatization is also shown to be at work in the hurricane Katrina disaster to the detriment of the New Orleans poor. Coverage is given to the Asian Tiger's financial currency debacle and the recovery from the Tsunami that hit many coastal areas in the Indian ocean basin in 2004.In the last section, Kline does hold out some hopefulness, as she describes people's efforts in recent years to counter the neoliberals and corporatists to take over of many country's economies.I recommend this book, especially for those who have a concern for the poor.
