Martin Luther was undoubtedly one of the most influential theologians in history. An exceptional communicator who was also committed to upholding God's word, he sought to expose the church's abuses. In combination with a restless people and the advent of the printing press, Luther's challenges started a fire that took the world by storm. When Protestantism traces its roots, Luther is undoubtedly a progenitor. In other words, it is not just Lutheranism that traces its roots to Luther, but Protestantism in general.Despite his profound influence upon Western History generally and church history in particular, I suspect few casual readers have read him, which is unfortunate. Luther was a keen thinker and worth the effort to read. When I tell people that one of my must read books is Luther's Commentary on the Galatians, I am met with glazed eyes that ask, "why would anyone read a commentary for pleasure?"Perhaps the greatest service that Kilcrease and Lutzer offer to the church in their new book Martin Luther in His Own Words (Baker, 2017) is a sampling of Luther. Those who are new to wine often benefit from attending a sampling; in the same way, those new to Luther also benefit from a sampling.The authors give us 12 chapters under the heading of the five solas--sola fide, sola gratia, sola scriptura, solus christus, and soli deo gloria. For those unfamiliar with these Latin reformation terms, they mean this: faith alone, grace alone, scripture alone, Christ alone, and to the glory of God alone. Under each heading, Kilcrease offers the reader 2 or 3 chapters pulled directly from Luther and offers them a helpful introduction. Sections from a number of Luther's works were included including: his commentary on Galatians, the larger catechism, and Bondage of the Will to name a few.In an ideal world, this book will serve as an aperitif for more Luther. If this book stimulates the appetites of even 5% of its readers for his Galatians commentary, it will be an amazing success. Even if it doesn't, however, readers will come to know a man of profound biblical wisdom and insight.I received a review copy of this book from the Baker Books Blogger program in exchange for a review. Five hundred years ago, the writing and teaching of Martin Luther set in motion within the church a series of reforms that were so widespread and foundational that we still speak of them as The Reformation. In this anniversary year, much is being written about the lives of the reformers, but direct access to Luther’s commentaries, sermons, and lectures is an irreplaceable part of understanding the truth that triggered such sweeping changes in the way we understand justification by faith, freedom of religion, the nature of salvation, and the wonder of God’s grace. Based on updated translations by Dr. Jack D. Kilcrease, he and Erwin Lutzer have compiled and edited Martin Luther in His Own Words so that the essential writings of the reformation are available as a resource for study and for inspiration.The text is arranged around the five solas of the reformation with supporting excerpts from books, catechisms, commentaries, sermons, and lectures that flowed from Luther’s pen:Sola Fide: Faith Alone“A Christian is free lord of all and subject to none;a Christian is the most dutiful servant of all and subject to everyone.”From On Christian LibertyAlthough Luther did not hold to mind/body dualism, he often used language of “spirit” and “flesh,” and this quote differentiates between the believer’s standing before God and her relationship with others on this planet. Both statements are rooted in the writing of Paul who “made [himself] a servant to all” while at the same time urged believers to “owe no one anything except to love each other.”Luther’s Commentary on Galatians further explicates this relationship between faith and works with the stunning conclusion that, while the works of the law do not assist us in salvation, it is only people of faith who are truly “doers of the law.”Sola Gratia: Grace Alone“To fulfill the law means to do its work eagerly, lovingly, and freely, without the constraint of the law; it means to live well and in a manner pleasing to God, as though there were no law or punishment.”From Preface to St. Paul’s Letter to the RomansLuther’s translation of the Bible eventually became the standard translation within the German-speaking world (equivalent to our English KJV). In his introductions to each book, his teaching lived on long after his death, influencing both Tyndale and Wesley in their spiritual development.In his teaching and his writing, Luther affirmed the role of the law as teacher, but declared its insufficiency to bring about righteousness since it is impossible for humans to consistently obey the law. The role of the gospel is to pave the way for new life, a work of grace in which Christ’s righteousness is imputed to the believing heart.Sola Scriptura: Scripture Alone“The clarity of Scripture is twofold, just as the obscurity is also twofold. The one is external, placed in the ministry of the Word; the other internal, placed in the understanding of the heart. If you speak of the internal clearness, no man sees one iota in the Scripture but he that has the Spirit of God. . . If you speak of he external clearness, nothing at all is left obscure or ambiguous. But all things that are in the Scriptures are by the Word brought forth into the clearest light and proclaimed to the whole world.”From The Bondage of the WillLuther held a high view of Scripture, affirming that, indeed, the believer can understand what it teaches on a particular subject with careful teaching, and that knowledge of Christ’s saving death on the cross, the central teaching of Scripture, is through the Word and by grace.Solus Christus: Christ Alone“The sins of the whole world, past, present, and future, fastened themselves on Christ and condemned him. But because Christ is God, he had an everlasting and unconquerable righteousness.”From Commentary on Galatians: Christ Took Our SinDeath of the sinless Christ earned justification for those who believe. Luther’s Christology differed from medieval theologians who were unwilling to accept Paul’s teaching that Christ’s work on our behalf was a sin-bearing work rather than merely a “superior moral behavior.” He argued that if we do not believe our sins have been laid on Christ, “then it is up to us to bear them.”Soli Deo Gloria: Glory to God AloneBut let this be said . . . that we are to trust in God alone and look to him and expect from him nothing but good, as from one who gives us body, life, food, drink, nourishment, health, protection, peace, and all necessaries of both temporal and eternal things . . . as an eternal fountain that gushes forth abundantly nothing but what is good and from which flows forth all that is and is called ‘good.'”From The Large CatechismWhen Luther and his colleagues discovered through visitations to country parishes that the state of Christian belief and practice were far from orthodox, he began writing summaries of basic Christian beliefs — not to replace the Bible, but to facilitate study of the Bible and worship with understanding of who God is and all that He has done.Kilcrease and Lutzer provide just the right amount of editorial input and background material, and then allow the words of Luther to stand on their own. Looking through the cultural lens of 2017, Luther’s quest for salvation and earnest pursuit of truth stands out in startling relief against our backdrop of spiritual malaise and cultural assimilation. As someone who has only recently begun working with clay, I've looked over and purchased any number of popular books to help me with techniques and inspiration. This book is my favorite of the 500 books from Lark. There's no explanation of techniques, as with the other 500 books, but the pieces that Julia Galloway (and Ray Hemachandra from Lark) has chosen are truly inspiring. I read a bit about Galloway, and found that she is both a very popular and accomplished artist, as well as a professor of art. With that in mind, the pieces she shares with the reader are meant for us, to enjoy, and to trigger our hearts, minds, and hands to create. Great photography, too, the pieces come off the pages well.

This is a book of photos of contemporary ceramics, chosen from the best artists working in the US. Marvelous pieces with wonderfully creative designs and endlessly varied surface effects. The artists are identified in an Appendix. The editor, who is a professor of ceramics and an artist herself, clearly worked hard to select these pieces, and the photos are also of high quality. If you love ceramics but can't afford to collect 500 top quality pieces, this is a must-have. Also highly recommended is another book in the series, "500 Cups."

I bought this book as inspiration for a friend who is a sculptor (she works in the clay medium). The book is a beautiful book, so makes a lovely gift, and the vases in it are so diverse and amazing that it is also a wonderful inspiration for all artists. I love this series of books!!

As a potter, I love this series of books and this one is no exception! Beautiful pictures by very talented artist. I received this book in just a couple of days thanks to Amazon Prime. It was packaged well and in perfect condition.

All the 500 series books are excellent not only for theclay artist but even as just a coffee table book. Thepictures are so beautiful and my clay artist friends alllove these books as references, inspiration and just plaingorgeous eye candy. Well done on ALL the 500 sculpture books.

I bought this for my wife and she really really likes it. It will however soon find its way to the book shelf and begin to collect dust as we bought several of this kind.

An excellent suspense filled thriller with plenty of action and several twists and turns. Contains a great storyline that is well detailed and keeps the reader captivated. The characters are well developed and realistic. A truly exceptionally well written story that I highly recommend.

This is a dark and brooding coming of age story, mixed with a touch of evil and mystery. The young “heroine” is a strong, charming and astute young woman. But she hides a blackness on her life and soul, that blackness taints her future. She is smart, and interesting. She shows empathy, sympathy, love and kindness when she wants to. She may not look at herself the way we see her. Her true self is arrogant, spiteful, mean and manipulative. Her past is the reason she is what she is and does what she does. Family secrets come to her when she is too young to understand them and no one is left to explain them to her. She has a fantastic transformation during this story that many readers may not be excepting, because what she changes into is so wrong. This transformation is most definitely not for the better. The male protagonist is a unhappy, unsatisfied, cruel and desperate man. He wasn’t always this way, his luck turned on him. It leaves him vulnerable, sad, and isolated. He is focused on one thing, and one thing only. He had a fantastic writing career. It came with a moderate income, and success. But after his first book made it to the New York Times Bestseller list, his other books bombed. Along the way he tries in vain to get back out there, start writing again, start living again. He is extremely motivated to fix this one item in his life. As these two main characters cross paths, the fireworks start, and what a ride that is. There are some amazing twists and turns. You kinda might know what’s going to happen next, but then the story goes a little off center. The backstory of the characters are superbly written. The whole book flows so easy, that you may read way past your bedtime and not even know it. Pick this book up, you are going to love it. I know I did.

Nem is given a box containing her mother's possessions some years after witnessing her murder as a young child. The box includes a mysterious green book. Once Nem determines the meaning of the contents in the book (which contains only names and pluses and minuses) she begins to use the unique power of the book to her advantage. She starts with providing her adopted parents with good luck (a plus) but learns that every plus must be balanced by a minus (bad luck). As an adult working in a book store she meets author William Barnes whose first book was a best seller. He takes her under his wing when she decides to write her own book. His next two books are complete failures while her career blossoms.This is a gripping tale of misuse of unexpected power that keeps you reading into the wee hours of the morning, with a surprise Hitchcock-like ending. I spent my book allowance in 2017 on Susan May books instead of my usual Stephen King/Dean Koontz books - and will continue to do so.

This story asks what at first seems a simple question, “If you could control fate, what would you do?” With a clear understanding of human nature, Susan May tells an entertaining story that gives an answer to this question with twists and turns that as you read and you think you know where the story is heading, all of a sudden takes a sharp turn and follows a different path. The characters have depth, are utterly believable and are all too human. If this is the kind of story you enjoy, you will not be disappointed.

This story is about a girl who witnessed her mother's murder when she was 10 years old, then later discovers an old journal that will "even the score". A great story that many of us would wish we could do no time or another in our lives. I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book.

I nearly abandoned this novel a quarter of the way in. After a dramatic start left me concerned for the child Nem, the overwrought, overly long, and repetitious description of William’s decline and Nem’s descent into darkness made me wonder if May was to be paid by the word. I did enjoy the end, but won’t read another book by this writer.

I enjoyed the story but felt it dragged in spots. Would have enjoyed knowing a bit about the previous owners of this book before Nems Mother.

Great read, however, sometimes it goes into needless detail.

SOUND ADVICE From Sound & Communications | November 2018 By Peter Mapp, PhD, FASA, FAES  The book sets out to demonstrate how modern software and hardware can be applied to the processes behind loudspeaker design and modeling, and it examines the process from the initial concept, through to specifications and theoretical simulations, to detailed design.  The book is written in an easy-to-read and informative style, offering many practical asides and interesting anecdotes that make it even more readable.  The book aims to bring together into one place the disparate strands that are required to design and specify modern loudspeaker drive units, and I think it does so very well.  Although only dealing with moving coil loud-speakers, the book. I don't think. loses anything by not covering other loud-speaker types. It is based on firsthand practical experience (nearly 40 years of It). and the 361 pages, as they are, are already crammed with information. A nice touch is that each of the 34 chapters begins with a summary of what is about to be covered; therefore, the chapters ease in the reader. Although 34 chapters might seem to portend a daunting read, each is reasonably short and well laid out. and there are good graphics to make this a pretty painless experience.  Although the book is not intended to supplant the theory or academic methods taught in schools, colleges or universities, it certainly helps to bring some useful reality to the subject. Costing $66.95 for the paperback version and $170 for the hardcover, this book is worth the money, and it's worthy of a place on my bookshelf.
