Aaron T. Beck, MD, is the founder of cognitive therapy, University Professor Emeritus of Psychiatry at the University of Pennsylvania, and President Emeritus of the Beck Institute for Cognitive Behavior Therapy. Dr. Beck is the recipient of numerous awards, including the Albert Lasker Clinical Medical Research Award, the American Psychological Association (APA) Lifetime Achievement Award, the American Psychiatric Association Distinguished Service Award, the Robert J. and Claire Pasarow Foundation Award for Research in Neuropsychiatry, and the Institute of Medicine's Sarnat International Prize in Mental Health and Gustav O. I tend to be drawn to relational theories (psychodynamic), such as Object Relations (OR) and Interpersonal, as a conceptual framework. Yet I practice from a technically integrated approach, drawing variously from all major orientations depending on the client's personality and Stage of Change (Prochaska, 1984, Systems of Psychotherapy: A Transtheoretical Analysis). While relational theories imply cognitive interventions, I felt I ought to read Beck's Cognitive theory of personality as its the seminal work of the cognitive-guru and I try to practice a well-rounded therapy.I personally thought that Beck's approach to Cognitive Therapy (CT) for personality disorders goes back to his psychodynamic roots, having much similarity to OR theory. However, I think Beck's theory is quite distinct from OR theory. While its easy to compare the therapeutic approach between CT and OR, I think the more interesting discussion is the possible integration of theory.There is a wide belief that all psychological functions perpetuate personality disorder, thus therapy must take an integrated approach, intervening on all those functions at the same time. Beck describes this as a cognitive-interpersonal cycle were beliefs lead to interpersonal behavior that reinforce the beliefs. However, Beck's approach to Axis I disorders would challenge the belief and ask the client to behavior differently in interpersonal interactions to either find evidence of their belief or to develop a new belief / change their schema. This would separate the cognitive/intellectual intervention from the behavior and emotional reaction. In order to intervene on all the psychological functions at once, the interpersonal interaction must occur in therapy. The therapist must explore the therapeutic relationship with the client, the cognitions and emotions that shape the client's interpersonal behavior, and the therapist's reaction. This also must be associated with ongoing interpersonal relationships outside of therapy and past events in the clients life. This is quire similar to a transference analysis and interpretation in OR or other psychodynamic therapy (Davanloo's interpersonal triangle between therapy, current relationships outside therapy and past events; Kernberg's Transference-Focused Therapy). Thus Beck's CT approach to personality bears some resemblance to his psychodynamic roots.However, Beck's theory of personality differs from OR theory. Both theories would conceptualize the cognitive processes and belief systems similarly, as well as the interpersonal patterns. Yet Beck believes schemas are at the pith of personality while OR theory believes there are several split-off ego states. Ego states could include a rational, adaptive ego; regressive ego-states fixated via childhood trauma; & ego-states shaped by interactions with key developmental figures such as parents, as well as society in general. Healthy personality is a gestalt or whole of past experiences, yet even healthy individuals can recognize ambivalence between 'parts of their self.' For example, we all say "part of me wants to... while the other part of me feels like I should." This is the parental or societal ego-state battling our wants, wishes or desires. In personality pathology, these ego-states lack integration and are often dichotomize or polarized. Some personalities oscillate between polarized ego states, others remain fixed at one extreme. Oscillation is most evident in Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD). Such an individual might flip rapidly from a regressive child-ego state to a parental-ego state. Their posture will go from slouched or even fetal to authoritarian, their inflection from child-like to parental, their emotional state from regressive to intellectualized, their defense mechanisms from primitive to rationalized, their sense of identity is completely shifted, emotional reactions polarized and labile, resulting in extremes in behavior and unstable relationships. An individual with paranoid personality has a belief that the world and people are malevolent because they have been victimized in the past, thus they enter social interactions in a defensive child-ego state. However, defensive posture is a passive, avoidant position to an underlying aggression. When other people notice this defensive posture / ego-state they too become defensive to protect themselves in case the passive aggression becomes active. When the individual with paranoid personality disorder sees others take on the defensive posture, they switch from a passive, defensive child-ego state to the complimentary ego-state that identifies with the aggressor that victimized them in the past. When the paranoid individual sees the world as aggressive, they are projecting the internalize image of the aggressor onto others. When others respond defensively, they are taking on, or identifying with this role - projective identification. The paranoid individuals follows suite by also identifying with the role of the aggressive and switching ego states: their posture will go from slouched, fetal and defensive to open-shouldered and offensive, their inflection will go from victimized to aggressive, their emotional reaction will go from regressive self-pity to a callous lack of empathy tied to rationalization defense mechanisms. Beck's cognitive schemas, at least in this book, cannot describe these radical shifts in identity, ego-states or 'ways of being' that or quite easily observable in personality pathology. However, OR theory rejects constraining and circumscribed approaches to conceptualizing personality, such as Freud's 'mental apparatus' model of personality. They want to purely conceptualize each client, which can be difficult and tiresome. I believe Beck's schema's can offer a medium that composes the 'stuff' of ego-states, thereby offering a way for OR theorists to conceptualize personality in a more organized manner. Additionally, this integration of the two theory's can explain how schemas can result in immense shifts in personality, identity and ways of being that Beck's theory otherwise cannot explain. Schemas consist of cognitive concepts or nodes that are related to each other to varying degrees (a psychological correlation between concepts). When a set of concepts are highly enough correlated, they create a schema: the physical parts of a dog are related to form a dog-schema. However, concepts are related between various schemas as well: dogs and cats both have wet noses, thus feeling a wet nose sniff your leg ought to equally elicit schemas of cats and dogs for a person who is equally familiar with both animals. Any event will be associated with a handful of cognitive concepts which will 'active' a handful of schemas that shape how we cognitively and emotionally process that event and behave in reaction to that event. In an individual who lacks ego integrity - whose personality consists of multiple split-off ego states - the even will active clusters of schemas associated with various ego states. For example, going back to the individual with paranoid personality disorder, the event of a social interaction elicits a belief that the world and people are malevolent, activating two clusters of schemas. The first cluster constitutes the defensive child-ego-state of the paranoid individual who sees the social interaction through the same lens that they saw the world after being victimized as a child: they regress to that period of their life. The second cluster of schemas constitute the aggressor-ego state, which is latent until the individual sees evidence in the social interaction that seems to provide proof their their belief is true: the the world and people are malevolent. These schemas that constitute the aggressor state include the physical posture (threatening), emotional capacity (or paucity of empathy), and behaviors (aggression) of the aggressor. In this way, ego-states organize a vast, unorganized sea of schemas into 'ways of being' in the world, and schemas define and conceptualize the contents of various ego states. Defining the contents of ego-states is vital to helping the client recognize their ego-states and associate them with their past trauma. This allows therapy to begin working through past trauma. If the client can recognize components (schemas, cognitive processes, etc) of an unhealthy ego-state, they can attempt new, healthier ways of being and begin defining the strong, adaptive components of their self as differentiated from those unhealthy states. Often these clients have the experience of 'being along for the ride:' their health, adaptive self is completely out of control to unhealthy-ego states. This is what Beck would call valence of schemas & dynamic psychology would call cathexis. Defining unhealthy vs adaptive ego states shifts cathexis to adaptive ego states. This process compartmentalizes maladaptive ego-states, yet once the client works through the unresolved emotions, the components, or schemas, of those ego states can be integrated with the adaptive, strong ego into a gestalt, whole, or healthy, integrated personality. A huge range of interventions, particularly experiential, can help with this but is outside of the point of this review.In other words, an integration between psychodynamic (particularly OR) and CT theory offers a much more helpful conceptual framework their either by themselves.

This is an irresistible journey into the mind of MÅ“bius (Jean Giraud). Originally an exercise to explore his motivations for abstaining from smoking marijuana. MÅ“bius goes to a place he calls Desert B, a cartoony world where the ordinary laws of physics of the real world don't apply. While there, he encounters some of his creations (Arzak, Blueberry, Major Grubert from "The Airtight Garage") and a younger version of himself who is disappointed with his future self. There is no denying that this is a work of great imagination. If you are a fan of Jean Giraud, then this is a must have, for sure. If you aren't familiar with his work, but like stories of simple truths told in an audacious style, give it a try, you won't be disappointed. I don't often give a work the label "work of genius", but I'm tempted to with this one. A great work of art by one of the icons of the graphic novel world. Can't wait for "Inside MÅ“bius 2" to come out!

If your looking for more beautiful Mœbius artwork, similar to his work on The Incal and Edena, look elsewhere. They relate this to a sketchbook / diary of his, and you can see why with the rougher art. They make a point to classify it apart from a sketchbook, because the art is finished and colored. It does still look nice in its own way.The stand out is the brilliant story, it’s hard to explain but the story is almost an auto-biographical tale on Mœbius and his resolve to quit smoking weed and how it affects him. That doesn’t do the story justice at all, I would definitely recommend it

I enjoy the off the cuff, stream of consciousness manner in which this comic is drawn and told, but many fans of Moebius may not. It is not like his more polished and detailed work of the past. It is a journey into Jean Giraud's mind.

Excellent Dark Horse publication. Top quality. It's a series of sketches by Giraud FOR Giraud, and not originally intended for publication. You have to appreciate his self-analytic musings.

I love Moebius's work and didn't really know what to expect from this book, it's awesome. 10/10

Very strange, takes on a whole new view of Moebius. A+

This book is mostly the author and drawing writing about the author himself. If you are looking for more classic moebius sci-fi stories look elsewhere.

Wow, I was really disappointed! I am a Moebius nut - he can do absolutely no wrong - this is basically a colored notebook of free-form scribblings and doodles. And apparently this is part of a 6 book series? Really? Rather than a serious work from one of our greatest illustrators, this feels like a slapped together posthumously published bit of scribblings about earlier work - not very carefully drawn at that. I would recommend spending your energy on "Arzach", "Blueberry", "The Incal" - there is a lot to love and enjoy, why settle for this?

I just finished reading this book and I love it. If you’ve read Susan Batson’s book, you’ll find that it shares the basic core, which is working from ‘The Need.’ However, as Warner points out, if you work from your own ‘Need,’ you’ll never really be the character, but rather, another version of yourself. BRAVO!You’ll learn how to create such a powerful backstory by looking for personality patterns, among many others, that will connect you to your character in such a way that you will simply click with the lines, the character, and all other aspects that acting requires.I highly recommend this book. And, NO, I’m not affiliated with the author in any way, shape, or form.About me: I’m a full-time actor living in Los Angeles. I’ve been acting for 35 years. I’m currently working on a show called, “The Last Legacy” and will be working on another one called, “Hotel Scarface’ due next year.

Wow, Real Insights. The shortest chapter in the book, Base Human Emotion, is worth the purchase price. Useful on many levels.

Great reference for aspiring actors

Let's not get crazy. The book is fine. But is it the promised revolution? No. What is the technique? A clear, commonsense reading of given circumstances that the actor then extrapolates into imagined memories that help create and justify a pattern of behavior through the use of a "Base Human Emotion." While the book poo-poos the use of objective in the very first pages, the "Base Human Emotion" is no more or less than a simple objective, i.e. "the need for order" or "the need to be seen" or "the fear of conflict" which translated to need is "the need for peace."This all leads to the creation of a detailed, imagined memory that justifies the Base Human Emotion. But this isn't revolutionary. Lawrence Parke wrote extensively about this in his acting book in the 70's, and called it a "Neurosis Provoking Moment." And he got it from Vaktanghov. So - nothing new or revolutionary. Sorry.So, if you want another take on how excavation of given circumstances can lead an actor an imaginative implication with the text and the role, go for it. This book is a fair account of one kind of process. But if you're looking for the technique that will change how acting is taught for "generation to come!!!!!!!!!" Well... not quite.

I bought two of these wonderful books because as a director I have worked with many of Warners' students and have been so impressed by their acting ability, being able to get to the place and emotion that I need them to get to, and their professionalism, that I wanted one to keep on hand and one to give out to promising young actors that I run across.

An Entertaining book, that’s helpful and informative

This isn't just for actors (although I can only imagine that it would help a bunch). This is for anybody who has to go out and do something publicly - music artists (Luke Bryan, anyone?!), politicians (she doesn't kiss and tell, so we don't specifically who) and blockbuster Oscar winners (Ryan Reynolds, Amy Adams, Zooey Deschanel, etc.! The screen writers and those behind Disney Animation lean on her and her technique as well to create realistic characters. What a relief to understand if you "do your homework" as a performer, the passion need you will be there...no going back to your worst memories to find tears and angst for a closeup shot. Loved that she came to Nashville and did an event at Parnassus Books! She's as accessible in person as her book is. I found this very helpful and will take tips away for my own public appearances.

I am always in the market for good, really good, books on acting techniques. This is perfect for my theatre students. They will revel in the direction this book takes them in. I fell in love with the author from here to the end. How heathy and fresh is this thinking!!! This book teaches one how to act like not and not become as well as learning how to get out of one's way. BRAVO to Warner Loughlin!!! FINALLY, a really really really fantastic book for actors and acting students!!!! I can't wait to order lots!!!

My name is Ilya from Queens New York. I am the happy student of Nathan Oxenfeld whom has improved his vision greatly and making further progress in a goal of optimal 20/10 vision which Mr. Oxenfeld achieved. Working with him has been a breeze as he is truly a person who cares about you and your quality of life that can be gained through better or perfect vision. I wanted to learn from him because getting his book, I saw that he was someone who started with glasses of about -3.75 and has now 20/20 or better vision with the Bates method. I was amazed at the amount he gave away for free. I actually became his first VIP student to fly down to North Carolina and work one on one for a week. Yes I was able to get to that 20/20 line on the chart with the techniques he taught and helped explain to me. My biggest takeaway is the process of centralizing vision to a certain point and understanding that is the point you are always supposed to see the clearest. We are almost tricked into believing that we are supposed to see everything sharp at once. A good way of explaining perfect sight are professional head-shots of people where the person's face is sharp and the background is blurry. Now my everyday vision is my everyday vision practice. I am really grateful for being able to enjoy more the immense beauty of the world that surrounds us from nature, to buildings to people. What he helps you with is also overcome the psychological barriers that keep us from seeing clearly. Remember to see blurry is to strain, and once you let go of it, clear vision appears, a very counter-intuitive proposition as we are used to think we should force things to happen. My understanding of how vision works now also has progressed with another realization being that when we wear glasses that we are actually looking at the world through two tiny screens on our eyes, and that because the eye does not have to focus on various objects over time, it becomes a crutch that makes the adaptive muscles of the eyes weaker, combine those tiny screens over the eyes with the tiny screens of our phones and computers, we have a recipe for terrible vision. You may think that getting private lessons is too expensive, however I believe you can't afford not to as it is a quality of life issue. I remember the scene where Luke Skywalker holds Darth Vader in his arms and Darth asks his son to remove his mask as he wanted to see his son with his own eyes rather than the technological contraption he had on, a last wish of sorts. Having owned almost all the books on natural vision improvement and reading them all, I have found Nathan's book, teaching technique and care about his students, being a guide to help you unlock the perfect vision you already have, but need that guide to a whole new and improved life. Could not recommend more highly. What are you waiting for? A better life awaits.

Materials and concepts are great but the contents of this book repeats through out the book. I feel like I am reading same thing over and over. I honestly think this book should be less than 100 pages with actual content

The world is very interesting. This is a series where the history and the cosmology are going to be just as interesting as the main story.The characters were reasonably well done but the interaction was often two dimensional and jerky. The main character is supposed to be a traumatized special forces badass but the math and his personal interactions do not add up. He did not act or react like any kind of veteran. 20 year old special forces black ops commandoes don't happen anyways. Just the training takes a couple years and you cant enlist until you are 18.The author desperately needs to use a real person as an editor. Spell check and auto complete are truly horrible combination and the book is riddled with words that are spelled close to what the author intended but are completely out of context. Once or twice is just something that can happen but it was pretty much every other page and some pages held many errors. It became very irritating. There were several spots where names changed randomly and one random gender switch.The book was interesting enough that I will probably get the next one in the series....eventually.

The idea is really cool and was what dragged me in at first, but after spending about a third of the book on what amounts to basically be the prologue I wasn't too thrilled. The fact that he's supposed to be a badass in the real world would make you think that in Endless he'd be way better off, but he doesn't act anything like it. He's constantly treated like crap by the other characters in Endless and yet his opinions on them, and even theirs on him, flip flop constantly. Then the flashbacks to what I think of as useless information while in Endless wasn't helpful, and the way the characters are talking to each other makes it hard to follow. There were also constant spelling mistakes, or moments when he would change a main characters name for no reason for a single line. By about 85% through I was basically just skimming so I could try to just finish the book.Like I said, awesome idea. Just needs work.

Story was pretry original. Liked how system worked and different to most books . Only problem I had was the flashback in middle of book was little long . And at times alot was said but felt nothing was happening. But over I read non stop and will get second book. Story has great potential just hope it geta better with eaxhneq book

The litrpg elements will kick in about 30% book completion but the first 29% spent in setting everything up was still entertaining. I have a few minor issues but not disappointed in the least bit.

Enjoyed the novel concepts tying game mechanics to plausible explanations of their existence.The MC is a bit too overpowered at times but has acceptable reasons for his gifts.Can't wait for the sequel to this book.

I just finished the 3rd book, and this series is awesome! Different take on litrpg, a little like Emerelia, but more action. Really looking forward to the rest.

Great story! Loved the perspective. I can't wait to read the next one! I couldn't put it down after the first half.

I really liked this book can't wait to see where the next book takes the story I will definitely read the next book
